Windows 10 Troubleshooting Thread

The upgrade was a mostly smooth deal for me, and Windows is running better than ever even though I didn't do a clean install. The only real issues I have are with AMD's drivers which was expected since I've had issues with 'em since Windows 8. Everything else transferred over and is working flawlessly. Overall it's a solid upgrade.

Edit: My main issue with the display drivers is that I get a black screen when running some games. I think I read somewhere that it might be a weird issue with DirectX but I honestly don't know.

Edit: Found someone with my card who has the same issue. Sound is there. Can still click around. Just can't see anything.

Yep, SSD and 1.5 million files indexed and completed. Even searching for "index options" took two seconds. I don't know what's wrong :( Never had that problem with Windows 7.

Thanks for the provided link regarding problem #2.
Hmm strange. FWIW a friend has the same issue, Start menu and right clicking items on the taskbar is not instant, but hasn't found why yet.
In any case, the SR1 is coming soon, I'd wait and see if it's fixed then.

So one of my computers isn't showing the keyboard input language in the notification area (my other machine does) and for the life of me I can't find where you add it.
Any ideas?
I see that you solved it, but for future reference:
Settings -> System -> Notifications & actions -> Turn system icons on or off (it's the one that says "input indicator")

Anyone else getting updates for all the built in apps right about now?

On my windows tablet I am getting a weird stutter in videos, both from capture devices over usb and xbox streaming in the xbox app, the signal is fine and the quality is fine but every second it will freeze for half a second, making the feed choppy.

I checked my cpu usage and it's not maxing out and windows 8 never had issues with video playback, must be a driver thing :/ but the intel driver checker says i'm all ok.

Wow, what did they do to the OneNote app? It's completely useless now. It can't find my notes. It's read-only. Why bother? It's a flat out downgrade compared to the built-in one Windows 8 had.

I am going insane.

Everytime I try to upgrade I get error 80070005.

Even tried to use the media creation tool and the damn think refuses to even open.

I am losing it. ANYONE else here have these issues? I have tried literally every thing I could find online and no dice.

When I pin iTunes to the taskbar, and open it, it creates another icon. In Win 7, I could fix this by just pinning the new icon and deleting the original one, but it doesn't seem to work like that anymore. Any ideas?

Anytime I open anything Windows 10-related that uses the new UI (apps, right clicking anything in the task bar, start menu, etc.), I get a small spike in CPU usage and I get framerate drops for a solid 3-5 seconds. Any idea how to fix this?

My CPU is the i7-5820, so it's not a weak CPU that's the issue. Maybe some compatibility issues?

I followed the directions in that link and the Windows 10 update popped up In Windows Update. The update still fails during the process of checking requirements. It gives me the same error code of 800700D.

Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit
3.40 GHz AMD Phenom(tm) X4 965 CPU
4 GB of Ram (2x2)
450 GB Hard Drive
GTX 750 GPU

I don't see how I could not meet the requirements. The Get Windows 10 app also verifies that I meet all the requirements, what gives?

I CAN'T rearrange the pinned items in jumplists (e.g. WORD documents). In previous Windows, all I had to do is drag the item. In Windows 10, this can't be done. This is stupid.

Guiz....I am dying here lol

It's been 3 days since I installed Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 my laptop via USB. (clean install) I'm still getting "Error code: 0xC004C003. Activation server determined that the key has been blocked." when I type slmgr.vbs /ato in elevated cmd. What should I do?

I can't open the settings menu. Whenever I click on it to open it, it opens for a split second and immediately closes. I've restarted multiple times and no luck. I really wanna get in there and mess with the settings, I especially wanna turn off the seeding of W10 updates, ugh

You can eliminate all the massive icon blocks on the right side of the start menu by right-clicking them. After you've unpinned them all, the menu can be resized from the right edge to reclaim the wasted blank space.

Groove is better function wise. I need Zune software for my Zune though lol

I'm so used to the Zune desktop I have been using it for at least 6 years. The groove music app looks like its lacking. Will all my music be in the app or do I have to import it?

Sorry if this has been asked, searching the thread isn't going very well:

Anyone having issues with small size tiles in the start menu going misaligned at random intervals (see image below)? This has been happening on my HP Pavilion laptop since I got it installed on day one. I've tried updating any new drivers and have been checking Windows Update every day to see if there are any new bugfixes. A reboot fixes the problem but only temporarily; they'll randomly pop back out of alignment at random.

Also, it seems my Synaptics Trackpad drivers don't retain settings between reboots. Every reboot, it resets track scrolling to off and pad tapping to on. I have to go into settings every reboot and switch them.

Did you first upgrade your Win8.1 partition and grab the updated key afterward? If you tried an old school clean install (for dual boot) without entering a key, you won't be able to activate.
The only way you can do a clean install to dual boot is to:

- Do an in place upgrade of your existing Windows 8.1;
- Use some software (e.g. Speccy) to grab your upgraded Windows 10 product key;
- Roll back to Windows 8.1;
- Start the clean/custom install via USB;
- Enter the key from your in place upgrade

Then activation should work. It's a messy, convoluted process. Alternatively, you'd have to buy an actual license to get a product key for dual booting. =/

I'm just going to keep posting this over and over:

If you are very eager to upgrade, tech savvy users with the above message can modify the following registry key to install immediately.

Warning: Serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly. Before you modify it, back up the registry for restoration in case problems occur.

1.Locate the registry key: [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\WindowsUpdate\ OSUpgrade]

2.It should exist, but if not, create it.

3.Create a new DWORD (32-bit) Value with Name = "AllowOSUpgrade” (without the quotes), and set the Value = 00000001 (hexadecimal).

Once the registry key is modified, close and reopen the desktop Control Panel, go to Windows Update and check for updates. You should now be able to click the Get Started button to upgrade to Windows 10. Note: Windows 8.1 users must go to the desktop Control Panel, and not the modern Windows Update UI.”

Anyone running bootcamp with windows 10? I was thinking of trying a complete new install on my macbook pro. I have the upgrade from 7, but something about the freshness ....

I am wondering if it is straight forward as a dual boot.

Do any of your screen turns off after a certain period of time? I made sure that screen and sleep are set to OFF, it's kinda driving me crazy:

Seems that my desktop is finally going to be upgraded. Had to delete some keys in the fucking registry otherwise the the upgrade process kept crashing at 23%. Goddammit.

I have bootcamp, and it was easy to upgrade. I did have to reinstall the drivers for bootcamp because they were iffy. Just make sure you put your bootcamp partition as the booting partition since it will reset a lot while upgrading.. Mine took more than an hour, it was stuck in 66% hell for ages.

Sorry if I missed anyone else asking this question, but my 'Settings' button doesn't work in Windows 10. Every time I try to open it, a window quickly disappears and then nothing happens. Has anyone else encountered this? It sucks because I can't even downgrade back to Windows 8 on this buggy mess because I can't open up the settings or anything associated with it via the search bar

I've got the same thing. Friggin' sucks. Even if you right click on the desktop and try display settings it'll give you an error. Lots of people seem to be having the same problem - http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/...ndows-10/df2e58bc-38df-4af2-af4c-a2e538a29a0a

Not that particular window, but occasional menus and dialog boxes exhibiting the same opening for a split second and disappearing has been the main issues I've had.

I tried the regedit thing and it didn't work. Any ideas?

Did you install Windows on your machine? Audit mode looks like something that is turned on during installation...you may have to reinstall your current version of Windows before upgrading to 10.

I've been running Windows 7 since I got this laptop. This hasn't come up before.

Try this: http://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/forum/windows_7-hardware/how-to-exit-audit-mode-in-a-simple-step/9b8ef608-576a-4245-a294-9751bb680135

Go to the Start> Run.
Type ‘regedit’ and hit enter.
Find and right-click the relevant registry key for your operating system:
Windows 7: ImageState in HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Setup\State Select Modify.
Delete the value and Click OK.
Restart your computer for changes to take effect.

I have a Sony Vaio from 2013. Whenever I tried upgrading to Windows 10, I would get a lot of jank, from distorted speakers to blurry text to broken touch pads. I looked on the Sony Vaio site and they suggested on holding off on upgrading until at least November, by which time they will have worked out all driver issues.

Good to know that my computer will eventually work with Windows, but I'm really surprised that it's going to take that long.

Lucky you. My Dell laptop will never work with Windows 10. And it's a Haswell, so it's not like it's old or anything.

Should I back up anything on my secondary drives or is the install going to affect my C: drive? I don't keep anything there besides installs so al my saved projects and data are on the other 4 drives.

It won't touch your other drives, but you could always just unplug them to be on the safe side.

Don't tell me I'm the only one that has this problem. In my Adobe CS5 programs, the file dialogs can't be shrunken down; only resized bigger. A Windows 10 issue, or something Adobe that won't ever get resolved?

I cant make windows to automatically pick a color from the background. I have my backgrounds set up as slideshow and when it changes windows sticks to the previous color. Anybody else having this issue?

Anyone else having a problem with windows blue screening when trying to watch a video? Was working fine yesterday but today when I turn on Netflix it crashes after a few seconds
