Have to imagine somebody will leak it on the 15th to the rest of us.... would imagine the apps have to be getting close to final by now too (along with opening up the store and music/games marketplaces).

Is there a point installing it without a legit key? You'll get to use it for 30 days, but that's not enough time. GA is October 26.

I assume somebody will do some kind of a trick to reset the clock like they have in previous versions.... getting the rtm, seeing final apps and the new marketplaces will be worth it imo.

also looking forward to the new hardware announcements which I assume will start happening over the next few weeks... what the big pc oem's will come out with and pricing for everything (surface especially).

With Windows 8, Server 2012 and Visual Studio 2012 go RTM as well.

Howdy! Today is the day we’ve all been waiting for. I’m proud to announce that Windows Server 2012 has been released to manufacturing. That means the final code is complete and we are delivering it to our hardware and software vendor partners this week. We will also make the software available to our volume licensing customers in the next couple of weeks.

The final build of Visual Studio 2012 is now complete! The engineering team is finished and is now preparing the build for our numerous distribution channels.

I’m looking forward to our next milestone when we make Visual Studio 2012 available for everyone to download from MSDN and elsewhere on August 15th. Watch my blog for the official release information.

40 bucks, what?? Is there a catch?

It's "only" an upgrade license.

need a valid xp, vista, or windows 7 licence to get 40 dollar upgrade.thats it.. and its only that price till end of January 2013 i think..pretty great deal

Ah, I see. But then that won't help me. All my copies of Windows are OEM, and I'm building a new computer...

Although I may have an XP CD lying around somewhere... Can I upgrade straight from XP to 8 for $40 (well, 40€ really, I'm in the EU)?

I think they said people on the Release Preview could also get the discount so that would be a little easier than installing XP.

You really surprised? There is no need to replace the current icons. Why are people expecting this?

Because Microsoft canned Aero Glass for a flatter, more Metro-ish desktop skin. The explorer even got new buttons. That's why people were expecting more.

You guys really look at icons all day? This is a no issue. If you need, you can customize them as you wish. Shouldn't take long for a Metro inspired shell replacement.

It's about consistency.

I, for one, am not that mad about it. I'll just install an icon pack and call it a day.

Actually I assumed OEM keys of XP could also be upgraded. Does anyone know for sure?

Also there is an option for a clean install. Don't need to upgrade existing.

Wow, those screens are gorgeous. Really highlights how much of a stain the old Vista icons are on the new Metro design.

Hopefully they address this stuff in the inevitable Windows 8.1 update they release next year.

That brings up something I've been curious about/people around the industry have brought up. Do you guys think MS is going to move away from the 3 year updates for Windows?

I've never re-skinned a version of Windows, but I might do it for this. Those Vista icons really should have been replaced, they look terribly out of place.

I'd think they have to, at least to the WinRT platform. The mobile market is (roughly) on a one year cycle and WinRT is still pretty far from mature. 3 years with the limitations currently in place would be terrible.

I'd rather they not release anything until it's ready to be released rather than sticking to a contrained schedule; having a shorter dev time would just be detrimental. W8 should have had an extra year or two of dev time.

Just look at android. They have an accelerated schedule and the OS keeps being refined, but it just gets more bloated (on the dev side) and the UX is still far behind iOS or Windows or OSX.

service packs

Has Microsoft ever changed the UI (Even minor things) with a Service Pack? I thought SP's were just for bugs and such.

Thurrott and Foley both are convinced that MS will move to a yearly update cycle because they can't let Windows 8 sit since its such a v1.0 product plus with the competition doing revs every year of their mobile/tablet OS, MS will have to follow suit to be competitive.

Has MS ever removed the start menu? Have they ever done anything that they are doing with Windows 8? They are doing a radical shift to compete directly with Google and Apple's offerings, so they'll be doing the same sort of updates that others do.

They've introduced new features, but not UI changes afaik. Service packs are mainly for fixes, not product refreshes.

Seriously?! Still no orb. Is there a proper log in yet? SMH. And no, I won't hit Win+X as a function for the orb. Besides that, it is fast and a speedy operation system. (using release preview). I just don't see a reason to upgrade...:/

Don't think so. They did introduce the Windows Media Center XP skin though, which made XP much more attractive.

EDIT: Some of those concept designs for desktop metro look really nice. And they're not even very far off from what we are getting. Amazing what minor details will do. Microosft did a better job with the desktop in the RTM, but could do more. And I still think Metro apps should be able to run on the desktop. But whatever, its not happening.

Didn't even know this existed. Why would they hide this?

Right click the start corner. It's not hidden. They need to do a good job of communicating the functions of the OS if they're going to make the interface less obvious. It's great if you know it's there but you actually have to know stuff is there to use it.

why would you need to hit win+x? anyway give up on a start orb, it ain't happening. And what is this about a proper log in? you can log in using a local account or a microsoft account. what more do you need?
Have they ever done anything that they are doing with Windows 8?
Dos to Windows is probably the last time they did something this major.
