Ignore the dumb text in the middle of the image...what's preventing Microsoft from implementing something that changes the text at the top of the window to white when it detects a color that black text will not work well with? I thought they would've fixed this after having the ugly white glow around letters to make them visible in windows 7.

It's probably for the best that Microsoft can't use the 'Metro' name any more because that... well I don't even know what that is.

New start screen patterns.

It's pretty cool that they let you personalize the start screen background though I 'know I'd refer the negative space (...I think that's what designer types call it) on the top and bottom :)

EDIT: What is up with dumping one's hard drive into the second tile group?! Someone needs to oranize there crap :S

Year of Linux on the Desktop!

2003!
2004!
2005!
2006!
2007!
2008!
2009!
2010!
2011!
2012!

That 2009 link is a fascinating read in hindsight. Wow.

The biggest catalyst for the Linux revolution will be netbooks: Gartner [IT] has predicted that about 8 million of the diminutive machines will be sold next year, with that number rising to 50 million (yes, 5-0 million) by 2012.
So where will all this leave Windows, and the Mac OS? It’s true that more and more of our work is aligning with the talents of cheap, durable and portable Internet devices that gain their access from the cloud, and neither Apple or Microsoft cater effectively to that niche. But there are certain things that the cloud just can’t handle: namely, processor-intensive multimedia work. And while consumers are certainly more reliant on Web services than ever, they’re also consuming, sharing, and creating digital video, large-format photography, music and presentations that are richer and more data-dense than ever before.

So Macs and PCs as we know them won’t be going anywhere, but as netbooks and smartphones proliferate, the total marketshare of Internet-capable devices enjoyed by Apple and Microsoft will be greatly diluted. That means that their respective operating systems will have to learn to play nicely with Linux -- a tall order for the industry’s two most stubborn companies. Unfortunately, they’ll have no choice; that’s the nature of a revolution.

It really is funny reading articles about netbooks in hindsight. Almost the exact same thing is happening with tablets now. "Windows is too bloated, it would never work on <x> form factor".

So, any word on when the app store flood gates will open up? Would be nice to get an early indication of how much attention it'll get from app developers.

Whoa, what resolution does your screen have to be to get that many rows?

I get it that many by default at 1920x1200 but I can expand it to 7 rows in the Start screen settings.

Are people flipping out about the colorful illustration, or the fact that the guy using it just dumped every file and program he owns on his start page? Because I don't mind the illustration and I wouldn't organize my system like that. So if it's the latter it's like complaining about furniture because someone covered it in dirty underwear.

Well mostly because the art is super distracting. It makes it the focus of the screen rather than the tiles themselves.

I wouldn't use it, but I'm glad I have the option. For twenty years I have tinkered with backgrounds and invariably go back to a plain bluesy I can locate the millions of delectable items on my desktop so I can move them to a bloated folder called 'archiveofoldshit' that I lose every time I get a new computer, because I am like an anti-hoarder.

....my 1366x768 laptop suddenly feels very inadequate. :(

For me it's what they've done to Metro.

The defining quality for Metro is the use of negative space. It's what makes the design so elegant and competitive with even the best-looking Apple UI. These wallpapers are distracting and make Metro look messy.

I hope the promotion materials only feature Metro with the standard solid color (preferably black).

"Windows ISOs are fingerprinted. Probably don't want to install leaked ISOs. And by ISO I mean the actual build post-install."
what does that mean? Microsoft is going to nuke all the pirate installs from orbit?!

Anyway, is there a changelog available?

I tried the release preview Win8 in Apple's Bootcamp and it's a not officially supported yet. The brightness on my MBP display couldn't be increased past the first three notches. It's obviously buggy and I'm worried that Apple will take their sweet time in providing support.

I like the trippy backgrounds. The Windows 7 icons clash with metro, but I'm hoping people will just release metro-styled icon sets, like the ones Office has.

Well yeah, the option is great. Just those are some bad choices lol.

Just a random question. With the Metro games, where do the saves go? With the furore over GFWL and the way it handles saves, it makes me wonder how they are handling it. If games are going to have achievements, history dictates that Microsoft will encrypt and hide the save files. I don't know though... If the achievements aren't going to tie into their Xbox achievement system, they probably wouldn't bother with the security measures. If they want you to sign into a Microsoft account on start up however, it points towards the Xbox achievement system.

Thinking more about it, they now have a cloud solution in place, so it might be a non issue. Your saves will be backed up along with all your personal settings etc. Someone with a better grasp of the OS please enlighten me, lol.

They fill a need though.... remember there were those on this thread (or the cp) that said only the colored backgrounds were too lame and wanted to put actual picture wallpapers on there. This is just a managed version of that by keeping the middle clean for your tiles. I do think they should and will have some less busy ones but having the option for more than just colors is a good thing.

The xbox live branded games will have the ability to be cross platform and use cloud saves... the skulls of the shogun guys have detailed how their game will work. http://skullsoftheshogun.com/?p=818

XBox Live branded games on the marketplace will have achievements that tie into your current gamerscore. I believe it is up to the game to decide if they want to save game data to the cloud or to local disk or both. As to where that save game goes, I do not know. Probably a protected section of disk reserved for the managed apps. I also believe that app data is backed up to the cloud if desired as well. Though I have not looked into that at all to be honest.

I see, thanks a lot for the information.
