Thanks guys.

The biggest negative I have found so far is related to skydrive.... really thought with the new update to the web they would have let you designate skydrive folders as video or music (along with docs and pics now).... then anything with that designation would seamlessly load in the music/video players.... has been alluded to such a feature coming by paul thurrott but it is still not there.

Not sure if this would work for you, but you could install the desktop SkyDrive software which syncs folders on your local drive to SkyDrive. Then add the video and pictures folders from your synced SkyDrive to the libraries. Kind of a workaround, but it would produce the same thing for you, as long as you are using the desktop at least.

lol so good.

Installed it again to check it more to see if there was enough changed to convince me to make the jump or not and my GF was around.

She asked me why the fuck did I put the phone/tablet OS on the computer. How were we supposed to use a phone/tablet OS with a mouse and keyboard.

One of his friends tried to touch the screen saying that if it was like that it was touch enabled and was astounded that you had to use a mouse with touch controls.

Jesus, MS pls...

Why didn't you just press the windows button to show the desktop?

Microsoft is doomed confirmed.

Just wanted to see an unbiased, uninformed reaction to windows 8. Both of them didn't even knew there was something called windows 8.

Touching the screen was amazing.
But I thought the desktop was part of Windows 8 and plays a bigger role than Metro on traditional PCs? I'm confused.

Just curious how many here did a full install vs an upgrade. At this point I'll probably create a partition and put it there as I don't want to lose my stuff.

Incidentally, will I lose all of my installed stuff if I upgrade my win7 partition?

I always do a full install, but It sounds like it doesn't matter that much now.

After finally wasting more than 2 min on Metro:

- You need a MS Account to play Minesweeper?
- There's no keyboard shortcut navigation (like alt+y for "Yes")?

...

Which part is giving you trouble?
Horizontal scrolling with a mouse is already giant pain in the ass. Basing your entire interface around horizontal scrolling and then making desktop users deal with it is just cruel. It just does not work with a mouse and MS do not get that. Scrolling alone makes it unusable for me.

Mouse Wheel is a must.

hahaha

I'm "trapped" in a loop with the Skydrive Metro app:

"Add your account" screen
Press Cancel
"You need an account to access Skydrive" screen
Press Close
Back to "Add your account" screen
Press Cancel
"You need an account to access Skydrive" screen
...

I'm of course using a mouse wheel, since when has scrolling horizontally with a mouse wheel been a good experience? It sucks.

Meh I don't find it that annoying. Not my biggest problem with Windows 8 by far. I do get extremely ticked off when an app doesn't support the mouse wheel though.

I feel like the OS would be much better on a trackpad with gestures.

Why is it that pointing to the edge of the screen scrolls for the MAIN metro screen (when you first hit the start key) but not for anything else within Metro?

This whole OS has a consistency problem.

:)

To clarify, my question was: is there something about mouse wheel scrolling in particular that makes horizontal scrolling bad, or do you not like horizontal scrolling to begin with?
The screen scrolling horizontally when you're physically scrolling vertically feels really off IMO. It's hardly the biggest problem I have with Windows 8, but it's annoying and reminds me of what Windows 8 is designed for.

I think it would benefit from a better portrait mode, that supports vertical scrolling - on touch devices as well as desktop. Currently, portrait mode is horizontally scrolled, just like in landscape, but with a lot cut off. It looks kinda cruddy. They likely did not think this was a big problem because of the aspect ratio of the touch devices, which encourages the tablet to be used in landscape. I guess part of the problem is that Metro itself is a vertically scrolled design. I can't think of how the apps should work in portrait. Homescreen would be like Phone 7 I guess (Though prettier).

It works fine for me. I have been using windows 8 on my laptop since I bought it in April. My desktop still running Windows 7, and tell you the truth after several months I much prefer Windows 8 and spend most of my time on laptop even when I am at home. Metro / Modern / New User Interface or whatever the hell Microsoft calling it still need some refining but for ver. 1.0 it's really not bad. I remember when the OS was transition from Dos to Windows it was shitter than this.

Also I find it works great with touchpad. Metro require less precision. Also Windows 8 will probably be best with new laptop/ultrabook with touchscreen.

It also really demonstrates that Windows 8 is not meant to be viewed in portrait mode in any way, even on the desktop (Which would benefit from it due to the mouse). This is a stark contrast to iOS and (to a lesser extent Android) which work equally well in both modes. And I think thats another design mistake on Microsoft's part, though maybe it doesn't matter - due tot he aspect ratio of the windows 8 tablets, viewing in portrait isn't ideal. But even so, the desktop would benefit.

EDIT: Actually, it does have a portrait mode. My mistake. but I'm pretty confident in saying that Microsoft wants people using it in landscape.
yeah they designed the OS to be held in landscape and to be used with your thumbs. All of the controls are on the sides of the screens.

Yeah, and this works just fine on tablets (I assume), but on desktop it could be a problem (for some people. I *personally* don't mind, but I could see it getting annoying)

What do you want the scroll wheel to do though?
I just don't think the interface works even acceptably with a scroll wheel. There's really nothing else the scroll wheel can do. But there's no need to push the new interface onto desktop PCs, it was their choice to do it. My solution would be to not do that - to treat desktops and tablets as separate devices with separate UI needs - but of course that runs counter to the whole idea of Windows 8.

I've been with computers since the 80's and maybe that's why I understand that there's a natural learning process that needs to be allowed to happen with Windows 8 that people are just out-right refusing to participate in.

When we went from the typewriter/word processors to DOS, the concept of a monitor was weird but I understood enough about keyboards to make the switch and the rest was a challenge but doable.

When we went from DOS to Windows 3.11 (first Windows), the concept of the mouse and keyboard were familiar but I still had to get used to the language of the UI and it was less challenging than navigating some DOS stuff and I eventually get a hang of it.

When switching from Windows 3.11 to Windows 95, it was a completely new and different thing; it seemed like MS was trying to confuse us all but that didn't last long when I gave the UI a chance. Seeing more apps with a graphical UI versus a text UI was just a better experience and things just felt more standardized and functional once I understood the UI language.

When switching from 95 to 98... The change was incremental.

When switching from 98 to XP, I was livid because it seemed like MS was trying to control me by making DOS an after-thought. It took me really getting into Windows XP to understand I only wanted DOS for applications that wouldn't evolve and that all experiences from Software to Games were better as native Windows XP applications.

People today really sound like I did back then. What's different between myself back them and the Windows 8 detractors today is that I was at least willing to learn. Call it brain washing or drinking the Kool-Aid but if you find that you can actually do things better once you learn a new UI then why stop yourself from learning based on only what you know about the old UI?

Touch pads with the proper drivers may actually bridge the gap you feel. I guess the perspective being "the new way of doing things is simply more than just about tablets even though it works really well with tablets" is just lost on many who want to do things the same way they've always have. People feel: If I'm forced to learn a different way to accomplish something I've always been able to do then it’s a failure in design hence they should have added new features without changing the way I've always got things done.

As a designer, you are now forced to think inside an imaginary arbitrary box.

Windows 8 represents a way to use one OS with multiple form factors and you know what, I'm willing to re-learn some things to have this. After all, it's not like I can't get things I used to do done anymore. I just simply have to do some things differently.

Some surprising opinions about Windows 8.

"Windows belongs on older PCs" -- SJVN

sudo apt shut the fuck up, more like it...

So tired of people complaining about the " invisible" stuff in windows 8. Technology is about getting better, and I for one am glad MS made the navigation invisible. It lets them focus more on the design of an app, without having to hold everyone's hands. This isn't the dawn of the computer era, people will figure it out.

The things that would make Win 8 or Metro better:

+Have App folders instead of listing everything like crazy when viewing all apps.
+Allow the old terms in Metro search
+Allow free adjustable width, which would mean it would be like Windows.
+Tile folders would be good as well.
+Return the start menu
+Have the Metro layout switch on the right hand side instead of the clicking on left hand corner for everything.
+Give users the choice between Metro and old desktop for boot up...
