Windows 8 Release Preview

SO i tried to install it and when I decided to keep "nothing" it froze. I have closed the window, now how do I start from where I left off?

You could make a startup program that runs a "Show Desktop" shortcut.

http://www.sevenforums.com/tutorials/26379-show-desktop-shortcut-create.html

Follow "Option Two."

Put it in %Program Data%\Microsoft\Windows\Start Menu\Programs\Startup
Tried it and still no go. Ran the program to make sure it was working and it did, but I'm guessing they disabled start up programs? Nothing shows up in the task manager except explorer.

I don't think you're supposed to land on the desktop after boot.

Testing a clean install from Consumer Preview by running the installer under Windows.

Let's see the end result.

Really don't want to reinstall everything. I'll revert back to a Windows 7 backup if I need to do so.

Catalyst Control Center doesn't work with my outdated ATI 4850HD on Windows 8 <_<

I really should have checked that before I decided to go and make this my main OS lol

Good job I have a Windows 7 disc at the ready in case I decide to switch back, which I might...

Why would you make a pre-release version of an OS your main OS?

The first time you log in, it'll start at the start screen. But after that, if you simply lock your machine anywhere else, it'll unlock to where you locked it from - desktop, metro, start screen, wherever. app

Because I'm a fool, that's why...

Honestly, I don't know. I was planning on doing a complete reformat anyway to get rid of all the unwanted crap on my machine so I thought I'd go about doing it this way. Maybe that's why.

If it all goes wrong, I have Windows 7 at the ready. Got all my important stuff backed up too, so it's not all bad.

OS install noob here. Can I upgrade directly from the CP to the RP? And if so, do I need to run the install while in W8 and not my W7 install?

Maybe I'm going blind, but where the hell did they move the customization dialog? The one where I can change system fonts and sizes?

That dialog was removed sadly... though the actual settings still exist. The only workaround so far would be to make any changes you want on a Windows 7 install, exporting the registry key:
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control Panel\Desktop\WindowMetrics and importing it into Windows 8, that atleast worked for the Consumer Preview.

Reporting back.

As expected, nothing was kept from the Consumer Preview.

All legacy programs were moved to the Windows.old program under Program Files.

Going to find that Windows 7 backup to revert.

Uninstalling.

Maybe I'm thinking of a different dialog, but is this not what you mean:

Control Panel\Appearance and Personalization\Fonts?

This is the dialog I'm talking about:

I'm finally on the Release Preview, and uh... they might have changed the design a good bit, but the transparency of Aero is still very much in. It looks much less like Vista/7, though, and fits Metro a ton better.

So far, other impressions: It's fast - really fast, they've tweaked the charms to appear smaller when brought up - much more pleasing to the eye, and the app switching pane now has labels telling you what app the thumbnail represents.

Time to get into these metro apps.

Aero was never intended to be removed for the RC. The blog post that first introduced it said you'll see "hints" of the removal for the RC.

You won't see the final desktop UI until RTM.

This is definitely a nice improvement over the CP. The apps are a lot nicer. Multi monitor support still needs a lot of work though. I hate how I click the start screen on one monitor and it closes a metro app on the other. There seems to be no way at all to have two metro styled things open on more than one monitor, which really sucks as I want to have one monitor always displaying the mail app + a news feed, but every time I access the start screen on the main monitor it closes it. I'm worried that this won't change as it seems it may be a design decision rather than a technical limitation.

There's also still the problem with the metro snapped app resizing windows weirdly and them not resizing back when you close it.

Anyone expecting the finalized RTM to be sleek and sexy like XP and Vista? (also when does the RTM release?)

The Release preview already is sleek and sexy. The final few changes they're to make - probably icons and the such - will just be the icing on the cake.

Still, not many apps available in the store. They need to get crackin on that. Also, I wish that they'd at least allow for the rotating scenic wallpapers on the start screen, much like the Bing page on the 360. The funky little abstract BG art they have going is tacky.

Holy shit; right-clicking the bottom-left 'desktop' charm now brings up a small 'power menu' that gives you options like: Run, search, task manager, control panel, device manager, command prompt, windows explorer etc...etc...

But it doesn't give you the options of restart or shut-down...

Did that in the CP as well.

It's the same menu you get when you press Win + X. I love the command prompt (admin) option.

Sooo, I can't connect to Internet on the RP. I have my USB stick in and I tried installing my driver (disk). It wont let me install, it only recommends installing Windows XP service pack 3 update. Anyone know how I can connect to the internet via the new RP?...

Why doesn't the on screen keyboard pop up in desktop or non metro IE when I click input things?

Unlike Metro which was designed up-front with touch in mind, there's no way for the system to inherently know "hey the cursor is in a text input field now" on the Desktop. You can bring up the keyboard in one of two ways:

1) Tap the keyboard icon on the taskbar

2) Use the Settings charm, Keyboard, "Touch keyboard and handwriting panel"

What? I swear I've had the keyboard come up appropriately for input fields on touch devices on windows 7?

The Windows 8 Release Preview smooths out the Metro multitasking experience in Snap View, a split-screen view that lets you have two Metro apps open at once. The screen is split so that one app appears smaller on the right side, and another takes up the majority of the display. This allows for serious multitasking — a feature that’s always been essential to the Windows desktop experience, but never a big part of Windows Metro functionality.

For example, you can have a video playing in the main section of the screen, and a Twitter app on the right side to tweet as you watch your favorite TV show. Or you can be reading the news in the main hub, and keeping an eye on your e-mail on the right side. All of the Windows 8 built-in apps actually work in a smaller screen view, and it’s a surprisingly elegant U.I. to view and navigate.

two apps at once? guess i'm gonna have to look into water cooling to keep this puppy from blowing a gasket.
