Windows 8 Release Preview

Does anyone here use an asus stx sound card? Does it work in windows 8? I can't seem to find any real information on it. There seems to be one or two about it potentially not working but that was the previous W8 release.

I have a Xonar DG and can't get either the Asus or Uni drivers to work.

i sometimes get small freeze. had one lock up earlier. but so far it's working fine. got to run all my programs to see if they worrk. diabro seem to errored when i run but it goes to game after.

:lol wow the Release Preview boots faster than the Consumer Preview.

I thought the Consumer Preview was fast enough.

Damn, should not have done an upgrade I guess. Pretty much every app crashes :P

Yeah, this is kind of screwed up. I can't even sign into some of the apps. Maybe I'll try a Refresh

Try that out. I also had an HDMI cable leading out to my TV so I unplugged that.

---

That said, the only positive thing I'll say about this preview is that they did improve multi-monitor use.

It worked. I disconnected my HDTV and it worked. I also turned it on and it worked. I guess it just acted fickle when the HDTV is off.

Thanks.

I noticed a small thing I don't think was in the cp.... when you search in the music/video apps it pulls in small album art in the search box so its just not the text.

On the bad side the toms hardware apps seem to crash and never actually load..... but all the others have been fine.

I am quite happy with flash support in metro... it seems most sites I have tried so far work properly which will be a huge thing esp for winRT. On the negative side I am not a fan of how they change the metro IE pin/recent list. It used to be full screen and was able to show all my sites on one screen.... now with that little bar across the bottom you have to scroll way over. Also do not like it does not sync my open tabs which forces you to use the pins/frequent list more.

Love how snappy it is now especially IE10 with it's built in Flash.

Tempted to test it out on my real desktop rig.

BTW, the "Copy" function in IE10 finally works with image files. Go on and try to right click --> Copy an image and then paste it on the address bar.

EDIT: And now Metro IE can save pictures. :)

I set it up in Virtualbox. It's almost unusable in a windowed setting--the hitbox for the pull-down and corners is like 2 pixels, so it's really challenging to grab (instead of accidentally resizing the VB window). But, I'm not gonna hold it against W8 since that won't be an issue for real PC use.

Haven't done much yet, but the "people" app + Facebook sync = HNNNGH. So much easier to read than the actual FB website :)

Been running it on a new install on a new ssd, running like a dream. hope I don't run into any of these lockups or freezes, I'd like to use this as my primary OS until RTM later this year.

You guys have all the right chipset drivers, gpu drivers, etc.? obvious, but these things are always volatile when a new OS launches. I used this guide to help me get going.

Well, it's fast, but I just realized that my sound drivers aren't working... Realtek. I'm re-installing now. They worked in the CP.

Got them working. Just took a clean install.

Ok, the sports app is kinda cool. Once I added my teams it took me to a page with schedule, team leaders and other stats. Then if I click on a player it gives me a bunch of useful stats for him as well. This stuff will be great for use on the tablet while watching a game.

So apparently, the Start button is gone even in the Enterprise version? If so, I bet we skip this version at work completely.

Ugh it was bound to happen...

I plugged in some of my internal slave drives and when i boot it shows "Scanning and repairing drive (F:): 100% complete" and it's been stuck there for 20 minutes... WHY IS THIS HAPPENING let me boot, fuck

I have a problem with my main Hotmail account. I used it awhile back to get age of empires or something for free on gfwl, but I had to set my profile to the usa to get it to work, now my account doesn't log into anything because I'm in Australia but my account is set to usa, they said my only option was to make a new account >.<

Why? Just format from the W8 installer.

I asked him in the build new PC thread, and somehow his setup only worked that way for the Consumer Preview.

I just did a clean install just fine here.

Not to downplay his trouble though. There are people genuinely having trouble installing the Release Preview.

LOL! Weather doesn't appear to be a 'live' tile? I expected that to show the temparature in degrees, maybe a little cloud/rain/sun symbol on it for quickly seeing what the weather is.

Just installed it. Works fast. Apps are much better.

I'm surprised the system came out with translations already. There are still bits of English here and there in the OS, but most of the stuff is translated. I also didn't expect Live to work for Poland. It's a shame that Live system is fucked up, though, and because I registered on UK (when I was registering the Live wasn't available in Poland yet), I had to set up my location in Windows to UK too. Otherwise I only got an error message when I tried to run My Xbox Live or any other Live app.

For some reason Photo app doesn't want to show my photos. It imported all albums (folders) just fine, but only two of them are populated with photos; the rest is empty :/

And I'm saddened that the "glitch" with snapped windows still exists. That 4px gap between windows annoys me to no end.

?

Weather has been a live tile since the Consumer Preview.

Weather's been a live tile since forever. Mine is showing right now - symbol/city/temp

Windows 7 Homegroups still don't work.

Hm.

Would be a dick move if Microsoft said only Windows 8 PCs can only connect to other Windows 8 computers.

Homegroups work fine for me and did in the CP as well. I'm connected to 2 other computers running Win7.

Super stable on my home system, i'm amazed by how wildly different it feels from Windows 7. Well done to Microsoft for thinking outside of the box!

Ok, Photo app works fine now. Weather still isn't live, though :/

For some reason I can't run Steam. It either tells me Steam is currently offline (it's not) or after reinstalling, now it's throwing an error that I don't have access to the Internet (obviously I have).

So, about those border padding issues, and the RP not letting us get to the Personalize > Color > Advanced screen to change them: http://sawstudiouser.com/forums/showthread.php?t=15549

Thought I was onto a winner here, with a registry tweak for the border padding thickness. But regedit tells me that Win8 has this set to '-60' by default, which leaves us with a 2px border around the edge of the window, which may be what is interfering with the 'snapping' ability. Anyone got any light to shed on this problem?

Really digging the apps that are popping up already. The new built in ones are great, zune in music is awesome, and wikipedia is really pretty.

Can't wait for non-bezel MT monitors to start shipping. Hopefully people build some with built in ARM chipsets or x86 thin clients. my desktop is totally ready for some hyper-v rdp action.

Finally got a chance to install it and mess around with it. I love it and the improvements they have made to some of the apps is a step in the right direction. I like that in Canada that the Music app works with my zune pass now.

Edit: I also connect my laptop to my TV, very nice way to use Metro.

Windows seems to suck every other update.
3.1x: good
95: good
98: good
98SE: good
2000: good
ME: bad
XP: good
Vista: bad (debatable)
Windows 7: good
Windows 8: bad (debatable)

See a pattern here?
only works if you ignore updates that don't fit the pattern
