Windows 8 Release Preview

I don't think I'm willing to accept 1366x768. In a new notebook I want at least 1600x900 for 13" to 14" devices. With the Zenbook Prime and various even smaller tablets like the Surface Pro or the Vaio Duo 11 having a 1080p display, I think that's a reasonable expectation.

Also, opening it looked somewhat annoying in the video.

The 15" Zenbook looks quite interesting, but I'm not sure I want a device that big and I don't like having a numpad on a notebook.
On the other hand, quad-core and GeForce 650M.

If you're not looking for a lightweight laptop nor a touch screen, there's nothing new that's going to be shown around this period of time, you already have plenty of existing choices.

Right now, I really don't know what I'm looking for. Only that I'd like to replace my 5-year-old Macbook (~2.5 kg, 13,3", too slow) for a new Windows 8 device at some point.
Since it won't be (that) long before I finish college I don't have any clear use cases either. No idea how mobile I need it to be.

So I'm open to Intel tablets, Ultrabooks, non-ULV notebooks, desktop pcs.

Yeah, that's a dealbreaker for me.

If you can wait, I would wait.

Next year Intel will release their next gen chips (Haswell) which should make for a marked improvement over the current Ivy Bridge chips.

Waiting will also allow companies time to see what works and what doesn't in these new form factors. Windows 8 has been the biggest hardware disruptor I have seen in a long, long time. It looks like a lot of companies are just spit balling at this point to see what sticks.

Yeah don't buy that crap. 1366x768 on a 13" laptop should already be the bare minimum. Manufacturers that put that kind of resolution on anything bigger deserve to fail.

But that's 1366x on 11 inch laptop :]

Ohh I thought he was referring to 13/14" laptops in general.

Anyways looks like the verge updated their article:

Update: Good news! Acer has gotten in touch to say that the Aspire S7 I played with was a prototype unit and that the final retail laptop will offer a full 1920 x 1080 HD resolution. So now it's even harder to find any glaring faults with it.

This thign really is beautiful.

That Acer laptop is really nice. Pretty sure the reason the gestures don't work on the touch pad is that it is the release preview.

Surface is still the sexiest.

It's funny. Whenever someone mentions the Surface, I always have to remind myself how good it actually looks. I still have it as "just another tablet" in mind.

Maybe I'll be there next year, when v2 comes out.

the surface keyboard doesn't look too great for laptop use (in your lap), so I am still up in the air with it.

I don't get the keyboard for the surface. Is it hard? Like a stiff penis?

I'm seriously asking. Or is it floppy? Like the ipad smart covers? It has to be hard right? I'm talking about the tactile one.

Is exaclty like the iPad, so you will be typing in a flat surface (no pun intended), if you want something more sustancias you would need the other cover with physical buttons

yeah that's the one I'm referring to, the tactile one with actual buttons. So that one is completely stiff?

No real wide separation between keys and low key travel means that while this will be nicer to type on than touchscreen, it still won't be anywhere near as nice as real good laptop KB.

Windows 8 Pro on Dreamspark is final RTM build, no worries about in installing it, go right ahead.
I get this too, so a quick question if anyone's used VHDs and can answer for me:

I have the consumer preview installed on a VHD - can I just put in the RTM disc, choose the VHD that the consumer preview is on and install or upgrade it?

Or do I need to delete the current VHD, make a new VHD file for the RTM version and mount the VHD, etc, before I install it?

gotta wipe the consumer preview. it's not 'upgradeable' to a real version.

Kind of missing the point though, unlike any other tablet on the market, you CAN plug the tablet into a keyboard and mouse and use it as an office workstation, on Android or iOS they have to try and make Excel type programs work in touch, which simply hasn't happened so far.

But as mentioned at the end, if you want to make changes to settings that are not available in the metro PC settings, you'll have to use the classic shell, which is annoying when you're on a tablet. It would be great it Microsoft could slowly upgrade those parts with yearly .1 releases.

Xbox Game Launch Linedup revealed.... A few surprises. (so we don't have to venture to the mess that is the gaming side). Still want to see some of these in action though. Really hope the games are the xbla versions and not the crappy wp7 versions (hydro thunder, toy soldiers, etc)

I don't see many people venturing into the control panel for a very controlled RT experience. I think it's cool for the power user to be able to tweak stuff, but I hope for the common user it's "just there."

Does anyone know if/when IE10 is going to be available for Windows 7?

I would've thought Windows 8 going RTM would mean it's done.

You can change it to a picture password which should make it faster to log in at least.
