Please for the love of everything that is holy tell me a way to remove the 'sign in' to your live account at every boot, either make it save my password or something.

If you go into PC Settings > Users, there are additional options you can choose for sign in. For desktops, PIN is probably ideal. Picture password is great, but it feels much better on touch hardware (since you need to do gestures to sign in).

Ah yeah, PIN is what I need.

It's because I'm using LastPass with a 20 character randomly generated key, having to log into my LastPass on my phone every time is a pain, especially when I enabled Google Authenticator. Plus I have a keyboard with no labels and while I'm good at blind writing, random keys are still annoying, add that to fact that that I got home from surgery yesterday and my hands are shaking.

Like the perfect shit storm.

same situation here...

Is it possible to remove the Metro screen access from the left hand corner? I installed Classic Shell and my typical way of opening the start menu is just dragging it all the way to the corner, metro access is kinda screwing that up.

Ah yeah, I forgot about the PIN option.

The new beta of Start8 can disable the corner gestures if you're okay with using it over Classic Shell.

I'd rather not have any Stardock software near my PC, have a strained relationship with that company and its owner. Was hoping for a Classic Shell / Native windows / other way of removing it. Maybe I just have to bite the bullet ... People say Start8 is a lot better anyway.

Or just use Metro.

Awesome, exactly what I need - Thanks.

At doing what?

Full-screen dock software, don't need it. I've used the start menu forever, it's like second nature now. I don't need it to re-invent the wheel when it's doing nothing for me. Matter of taste. With all these software alternatives, I presume I'm not alone.

EDIT: Just noticed that "Disable active Corners" IS in Classic Shell, activated by default ... Odd it didn't work.

Ah well, whatever people wanna do. I always found the Start menu was so slow and clunky to navigate. I can understand people liking they way it did search better but as a launcher it was pretty crappy.

It doesn't disable the metro start screen. Next time click the link and read properly.

The hybrid devices look pretty interesting. But with all the negative feedback on W8 I'm curious to see what happens with desktops and traditional laptops.

I appreciate what MS is doing here - streamlining platforms to avoid fragmentation. It's a solid goal for the long run, but the journey is going to have a very bumpy start.

How do you change the 'active' window for anything Metro related? I was toying around with Fresh Paint ( Which is pretty sweet ) but because I hit something in the Charm bar on the second monitor, which wasn't disabled from all those third party apps, everything metro / app related is now opened on that screen. How do you tell it to move it back to the main monitor?

go to the corner of the monitor you want it on and click something.

Installed Enterprise RTM on a SSD. With Classic Shell (and disabling the Metro BS hot corners), Windows 8 is awesome. I'll never understand why this isn't a built-in option. If there's a Win8 OT, the subtitle should be "Just Install Classic Shell".

Classic Shell has an option to disable the Metro hover button. Its under Windows 8 settings on the latest version of CS.

My install of Windows loads up right to the desktop and if I need to access Metro, I do it via the Charms bar on the right side.

Does anyone know how much faster a ULV Intel core i5 (e.g. the 1.7 GHz 3317U) is compared to my Intel Core 2 Duo E4400 (2.0 GHz)?

Haven't found any numbers to compare them (e.g. flops) and I haven't seen any benchmarks that show the old Core 2 Duo next to the i5.

I'm wondering whether a dual core ULV machine like all those Ultrabooks and Windows 8 tablets is fast enough for my main PC. If not I might have to look for quad-core non-ULV devices.

I don't feel much of a difference doing web surfing and basic tasks on my i7 ulv laptop and my C2Q desktop. It all depends on what you want to do.

Flops no longer matter.

The 1.7ghz 3317u shold be faster , its capable of 4 threads vs 2 and IPC increased greatly from the core 2 duo days. I'd say its about 30% faster clock for clock.

In games it depends on what igp your core 2 duo is attached to. If you have a dedicated gpu it will be faster than the ivy bridge ulv

Why the fuck are there all 300+ birthdays from my contacts now on my Calendar? The app is now useless.

Fucking ridiculous, you cannot delete them.

Going by the 3DMark CPU numbers here and here it looks like the 3317U is slightly more than 2x faster, and around the same speed as the regular i5-520 in my current laptop. Don't underestimate the advancements in CPU technology over the past few years.

You should be able to turn off the Birthday Calendar entirely somewhere in the settings.

I just have mine set to login with a PIN.

Edit: nm, beaten

Anyway, I've been using it for about a week now and like it for the most part. There are definitely some really annoying aspects but I think they could be fixed with some app updates or tweaks (mainly Chrome sucking, having multiple instances between metro & desktop, slow stock app starts, etc). Overall though, it seems faster than Windows 7 for basic tasks. Not sure if that has to do with the fact that I reformated and did a clean install but I guess we'll see in a few weeks.

Not finding it.

Gmail settings? Windows 8 Settings? Facebook settings? Why the hell would it automatically shit all over my calendar and not have a way for me to change that setting within that app?

Did it stick the birthdays into the gmail calendar itself or are you just seeing them on the app?

The Birthday Calendar setting is under Settings then Options in the Charms bar.

Not gmail. The App was getting it from facebook.

My confusion was that I needed to open the charms bar while the app was open. I have a dual monitor setup with metro on the left monitor and I used the right monitor's charm bar. Guess I need to use hotkeys from now on.

But seriously, how is this ever a useful setting? If you have a social networking app with only family and very close friends? Which one is that?

Haven't had a game related crash in ages. At a boss, seconds before he go down the machine goes spastic, get a "BSOD" with a big frownie face and something about CLOCK_WATCHDOG something and lost all the kill XP.

That sucks, i used to get BSOD on the developer preview but the RTM seems as stable as Windows 7.

What do you guys think if I install Windows 8 on my old IBM Think pad X41:

http://www.notebookreview.com/default.asp?newsID=2362

It has 1 GB of RAM (shows .99 GB)
1.6 Ghz
60 GB Hard Drive.

The 12.1 inch monitor resolution is 1024 x 768

Is it worth it?

I am trying to find pen... If I can find the pen, will it work with Windows 8? Its PWacom or something along those lines...

Currently its running Windows XP... I am thinking of partitioning the hard drive or doing a clean install via USB or through Virtua Disk...

Doesn't seem to run half bad: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oG8Sc8wlp3Q

Don't get why all these other tablet makers including Apple aren't including some type of kickstand for no hands use like the surface has. It seems like a no brainer and a big difference maker.
