Windows 8 Release Preview

I finished the DL in just a few minutes, in before the crowd I guess; I'd try it out and give impressions but I'm doing stability tests on the system it's to be installed on. From what I've talked about with some guys in irc it's largely the same with some refinements, as is expected.

Guys. The apps are SOOO much better. Didn't want to say anything yesterday, but now it appears like everything's out there.

Particuarly, check out the app Cocktail Flow. One of the coolest Windows Phone apps, and equally as awesome on Windows 8. Even if you don't drink, check it out!

yeah i expected that to be the biggest improvement. btw, is the Store open to everyone yet now?

Huh. I don't think this is actually in the Release Preview, but Thurrott got his hands on it:

Hmm.. why is the iso that the setup download creates is only 2.6GB? Maybe because it can't be used for fresh installs or something?

Damn VirtualBox! What's the least intrusive way to get this installed? Haven't messed with dual-booting in a long time. I remember reading a VHD guide somewhere...

well, my vmware vm just crapped out on me. Froze in the store and then became corrupt (╯°□°)╯︵ ┻━┻ Gonna give it another try.

So I'm not going to partition; too risky on my only machine. I tried VirtualBox but it gives me

"VT-x/AMD-V hardware acceleration is not available on your system. Certain guests (e.g. OS/2 and QNX) require this feature and will fail to boot without it."

and then something about how it's set to 24 bit color instead of 32 bit. So I have no idea what to do from here.

ISO is downloaded and burned to a DVD (had to run to the store as I realized I was out of DVD's).

Getting ready to install over my current CP partition. After about a week, if I really like it and have no compatibility issues, I'll reformat my drive, and go with Win RP as my main OS.

could have just used a usb drive

Windows Store: whose idea was to have an endlessly long scrolling interface to get to different categories? I have to scroll through 18 different categories to get to Education? It's called a tab bar guys…

Mail: Is there no way add IMAP accounts? All I'm seeing is gmail, exchange, and hotmail.

False alarm. I restarted my Mac and the VM loads fine. Might run the disk check tool though. Really do like the new wallpapers

Oh, in case anyone wants these (for the Release Preview), here are the lock screen & wallpaper images from the Consumer Preview. They go in C:\Windows\Web. Don't overwrite the folders, just copy the images from the folders you downloaded to the folders in that location in the C drive. You might need to rename some of the images in those folders because the images in the zip might have the same names as the one in that folder in the C drive.

Installation took all of 15 minutes from my USB stick. So far it's a lot faster than the CP, which I used as my main OS for the last few months. The text size needed to be reduced the minute I even signed in, everything was looking huge.

The gestures seem more fluid and more responsive, and do move quicker than in the CP. The amount of system color choices was updated as well. I never used the Metro apps so I cannot comment on those.

Just waiting for my Nvidia drivers and everything will be back on par again!

RE: Windows Store, try using Semantic Zoom (cntrl + mouse wheel, or the "-" button on bottom right near the scroll bar). Makes dealing with large data sets much easier.

Okay, just to be clear. When I install this version of W8, it will be completely new and I lose all of my previously installed programs?

Well the Release Preview is off to a good start for me, I downloaded the 32bit ISO and tried to install it in VirtualBox, the first time the VM died at 40% with KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_FAULT and now it won't even go past "Copying Windows Files" :/

Surprised to see my download speeds are fast. Enough time to run a few errands and test it out on my VHD installation. I don't have much hope but I am interested in seeing if they improved it in any way.

Anyone have any idea about this? I never tried *that* hard to get my emails working. (None of them are Live or gmail, how about that!) but I could never use the Mail app, in the consumer preview, and it looks no different now?

they fixed my drag file/icon bug to show desktop corner not working in the release preview at least!

Anyone know how to automatically bypass the lock screen and start screen after booting? I want it to start up at the desktop.

I might not have understood your question correctly.

If it's like previous Windows:

Run -> "control userpasswords2"

Uncheck the box "users must enter a user name and password to use this computer."

Can I just confirm that transitioning to this will not delete my files, just move them to a 'windows.old' type of folder?

Yikes, didn't work with a Microsoft account.

Switched to a local account and it did bypass the lock screen, but I'm still booted into the start screen. Any way to land in the desktop?

I don't think you're supposed to land on the desktop after boot.
