Desktop Tiles have changed

much better
I was wondering if they were going to leave them as ugly as they were, this is a lot better.

Since I installed this RC on a different partition I keep getting the checkdisk screen showing up when I boot to windows 7. It tells me that a disk needs to be checked for consistency (the partition where I installed Win8 RC).

It does this every time. It is very annoying. Anyone has any suggestion how to get rid of this other than uninstalling Win8?

Are there any really cool apps?

I have the Sports App, and it's pretty cool, but it's not really necessarily, or even as functional as say going to ESPN.

Ya know I've never actually looked into using it. Shows how much I paid attention. I didn't really realize it did that...
Best feature, when running out of space, add new drive, make a pictures folder, add it to the library and forget where it really lives.

Obstructive ads are the reason people hate ads. I block ads in all android apps, and I block most ads in Firefox, leaving sites that use unobstructive ads like GAF, PC, Engadget etc unblocked because they understand that people that huge ads getting in people way is terrible. I will never go without an ad blocker until practices like the one shown there are stopped.

Windu, props to you wadding through the Surface thread and being the voice of reason. Still trying to catch up with that thread and it's a damn mess.

Those giant-ass ads look atrocious.

Microsoft can push ads at me if they give me the device for free. Considering the user pays a premium price for the tablet, any ad-bombing is fucking ridiculous.

to give it some perspective, click the link. that huge corner is at the end of a multi-page horizontal scrolling app. i think it integrates well into it

The developer of the app is pushing ads at you because the app is free. It has nothing to do with Microsoft, they are just providing the mechanism.

I´m of the opinion that any apps, operating systems and hardware that have adds in them as default should be free of charge to the user.

It´s bad form to double dip by charging for your shit and then shoving adds in your clients face on top of that.

The people having those issues all came from a cp > rp upgrade. If that's what you did do a clean install.

What? That is nonsense. I've had lockups and all of my installs are clean. I would never run an upgrade on a prelease OS unless it was for testing purposes.

That's the first I've heard of it. Everyone I know running the RP from a clean install has had a completely bug-free experience, including myself.

So I installed the Consumer Preview finally, and I freaking hate it. I can't be the only one can I? Every bit of tech press I read is just jizzing all over themself about Metro this Metro that. I think it's hideous.

I hate the fact that the Start Screen takes up the entire screen. I hate that nearly all the Control panel apps do the same. I hate that I can't set a custom image on the Start Screen (that I could find). I hate that I can't just boot to the damn desktop. I hate that everything is all sideways scrolly. I hate that Mail doesn't support POP3 or IMAP (though I hear it's supposed to before release).

I mean all and all it seems like a decent tablet OS, but as a Desktop OS? It just doesn't know what the fuck it wants to be. I have a 30" widescreen monitor for a reason - so I can have multiple windows open at once - none of this "all Metro apps are fullscreen" bullshit. Desktop has become a 2nd class citizen.

This may be the first Windows edition that I don't upgrade to. I'm gonna be the new Windows XP Guy™, only on Win 7. :(

Take a deep breath.

Now ignore Metro and just use the desktop. Only use Metro as a launcher for any apps you haven't pinned to the taskbar.

It takes a long while to grow on you. Took me over 2 weeks before I liked it. Even now there are several things I still don't like though. You'll never fully fall in love with it.

i assume he means release review, at least i hope.

Whichever one was most recently posted to MS's B8 blog (in the last couple weeks).

It's not really entirely possible. Anytime you want to try to change a system setting? Boom, Metro slap in the face. Want to utilize that great Windows Search to launch a program? BLEGH Metro's all over your screen. Seriously, I cannot imagine why anyone thinks this is a good idea in a desktop environment. It's so jarring to have your whole screen change anytime you just want to pull up a new program. There's only so much stuff you realistically want to pin.

I'm just so disappointed. I thought MS was really headed down a good path with Win 7, and they could've improved upon it from there. Instead, they want to try to chase after iOS and shoehorn all this touch & small-screen optimzed garbage in here and try to drag my PC down to cellphone level.

they have said its coming

The mail app isn't finished and they already said it will support IMAP in the future...
At some point there'll probably also other mail clients in the market place.

Oh I'm sure it is coming, couldn't pass up the opportunity of a joke though. While I think MS has made their share of dumb decisions, I don't think shipping without proper email like RIM did will be one of them (at least, I hope not). Seems odd that they don't have support for it yet though, seeing how it is the most used email protocol.

Out of curiosity I've just installed Zune application. My god, this thing is beautiful. It's fast, it's smooth, it's clean, it's pretty. Why can't the Music app be like this?

To bring up the control panel, bring your mouse to the bottom left of your screen, right-click, select Control Panel. No Metro needed. Win+X also brings up this menu.

Yes search brings up the Metro page but just hit the windows key, start typing the name of the program and hit enter. It's really pretty quick. For file search open a Windows explorer window and search in there.

The whole screen changing complaint just baffles me and I say this every time but come on, every time you launch anything or alt-tab your screen changes. It might take a bit of getting used to but once you expect the behaviour I don't see the issue.

How often over the course of the day are you searching for programs? Pin anything you use all the time to the taskbar.

I agree, they should have made it the default media app.
