Windows 8 Release Preview

the new skydrive website is up

Goddamn, it's quick. Love it, really impressive.

Two flaws, though: No opening of docs into the Word web app with one click, and once you have a lot of folders and documents, collecting the folders in the sidebar for easier file management would have been nice.

But overall, I love it. 2/2 on recent web apps from MS.

Wouldnt be suprised if they did relase it on dreamspark too. They want everyone and their cat making metro apps after all.

Pretty sure 15th was confirmed day for release to msdn and crap.

Yeah I just found that out. According to this it will be released on DSP today as well, but I'm not completely sure I buy it. We'll see though.

Now cross your fingers that your admin cares enough to add the RTM on time. ;-)

I'm saying that, because back then, when it was MSDN AA, our admin had to manage and unlock the software. Not sure if it's still the same with DreamSpark.

Will do! I get my DSP stuff through onthehub, so it's not even from the actual Dreamspark website. I'm so confused as to what I actually have account wise.

What do you mean? When you have a word document in your skyrive and click the icon it opens the web app.

For me it first opens it in some document view where I can't edit it, so it's another step to either open it in Word or in the web app. Or I have to right click on the document and open it in the web app.

It's a very minor complaint, but I just like the quickness and simplicity of Google Docs when it comes to that.

Here it opens the web app by default when i click on a document... It's opening to the office desktop apps that requires more clicks...

Edit: Oh, i see you mean for editing the file... Yeah, that requires two extra clicks...

I love the difference in language tech writers are using to subtly affect change in opinion. Saying something like Microsofts reinvents Windows would imply a positive change, but instead they use foreboding language like "Windows 8 makes you relearn how to use your PC"

They're not wrong, but they're definately having an effect on their readers' opinions with how they present this. It's the little things I notice.

Did they have an ETA on when it might be up or is it just "sometime today?"

So I've installed Windows 8, and ever since then, whenever I go to access some of the other computers or folders on other computers in my home network, it tells me they're unavailable... but then if I wait a minute and try again, I can access them. This never happened until upgrading to Windows 8. Anyone else experiencing this?

Nothin but the release preview for me so far.

*edit*
I should mention I don't have MSDN, sorry. I only have Dreamspark Premium. It doesn't sound like they have released it anywhere yet.

Okay, just making sure I was missing something.

Any idea how big the ISO will be?

It's 3.34 GB. I'm downloading it now.

I assume many of the critics think this OS should of been just for tablets.

Well, I think the exclusion of a start button and the metro start menu kind of agrees with that sentiment. I can't really see Windows 8 catching on in the work environment (I base this on absolutely nothing. Just a guess) with a metro style start menu that may just confuse people.

Seems more like an OS better for home computers and tablets.

Lame it's still not on DreamSpark Premium :(

I feel your pain :(

Is DreamSpark Premium updated for everyone at the same time or is it up to each individual university to add products for their students? If the latter is the case then I have no clue how soon I'll actually be able to get it.

5 minutes till we see what people think about Windows 8.

Personal thoughts:

If you own an SSD, you need Windows 8. It's so, so much faster to boot than Windows 7 it's criminal. I use my machine exactly how I did with Windows 7 and barely touch the rest of the OS. I literally boot Windows, click "Desktop" and I never touch the Modern UI/Metro UI/Windows 8 UI/Clusterfuck naming conventions.

Now to wait for it to "leak" for the rest of us non msdn, technet & dreamspark users.....

You still need a legitimate key don't you...?
