Windows 8 Release Preview

RT allows other browsers as much as iOS does. They'll have to use IE's rendering engine, but can wrap it in their own skin with new functionality and other gimmicks.

They do not HAVE to use the IE renderer. The only limitation is that the RT API does not allow dynamic compilation of code - which hampers JavaScript performance in Chrome/Firefox. Obviously this is a major downside, so the work around is to use IE as the renderer or do what Opera mobile does - render on a server and stream the results to the client.

This same limitation exists on iOS.

My cousin just bought Win 8 in Pakistan through his school's program for 32 US dollars. I wonder if each school in the international market will have different pricing as compared to our $40 price point.

bought? It isn't for sell yet.

I'm on the W8 boat, but I don't honestly understand why so many people take such blazing fast reviews at face value. It takes WEEKS to get to know a desktop OS and appreciate all its quirks, even if you were already familiar with the preview versions.

I swear OS reviews have more of pageview traps than actual journalism these days.

The Enterprise section on the MS site must be getting hammered. Just getting a spinning dial after entering my details to download the ISO.

well that article wasn't really a review, it was more of a look at the notion that W8 will combine your laptop and tablet into one. I agree about reveiers needing time though. I wont take any review posted now seriously, mainly for the fact that it has only been out to select people for days and also because the store hasn't been really populated yet.

I was mostly surprised that there are people that convinced by W8.

My enthusiasm took a slight hit today when I saw the video that Aiiii posted. I was hoping some of the changes would be a bit more intuitive.

The race to stay relevant and be part of the conversation seems to take priority over conveying meaningful information to your readership (but some pubs did get review units just before the embargo lifted). After all, no one will hold you to your impressions should you decide to change your opinion.

That video is akin to stepping in crap and having it ruin your whole day. To be clear, the video is crap.

Maybe the application executable does not mean anything on its own or is too convoluted to fully type into the search box.
I had that situation (GnuCash) and did a Right Click -> Pin to Start on the exe and it shows up ready to be searched for in the Start launcher. You don't need to type the full thing anyway just enough letters to filter everything else out.

Some surprising opinions about Windows 8.

"Windows belongs on older PCs" -- SJVN

Want to have malicious fun? Stick some poor sod in front of a Windows 8 system and then watch them try to back out of an application. Watch them look around for the now missing in action Start button and hunt for the windows controls on the desktop screen eating application. If they're lucky they'll eventually stumble over the invisible lower-left corner escape hatch to the main interface. Oh yeah, this is so much better than Windows 7's Aero interface.

Getting sick of these articles that completely disregard the concept of learning.

Firefox Metro status update:

And the reason why this non-existent version of Firefox is already superior to IE10:

Love it.

We'll have some kind of sync functionality to sync data between your Metro interface and your desktop interface. We're hoping for a local, no setup sync functionality, but at worst it will be done through the current sync functionality.

This could be enough for me to switch back over to Firefox from Chrome. Especially the ability to sync between the Metro and desktop browsers. Frankly, BOTH IE and Chrome have been completely ass-backward about this.

If you want something better than Windows, go with desktop Linux, a cloud-based Linux desktop like Google's Chrome OS, or a Mac. Heck, try an iPad. Just don't waste your time with Windows 8.

Perhaps the most outrageous statement I've read regarding the Windows 8 platform yet. It even spits in the face of his fundamental points. He probably feels he needs to hate louder than anyone else to be heard.

Was getting ready to test out Windows 8 on a machine here at work and of course Symantec isn't compatible.

I hate Symantec.

So being someone that never touched win 8 build before. What notable keyboard shortcuts i should remember?

like is task manager still ctrl shift esc?

WIN + C to bring up the Charm bar has been the best short-cut for me.

Otherwise, it is:
WIN + D to go to the desktop
ALT + F4 to close an app.

just noticed that there is a open my video on startup in the Video app (settings, preferences), i assume the music app is the same. so if you don't want to see that marketplace stuff, you can bypass it.

I uninstalled the music app since it sucks so badly.

Yeah, I REALLY need this for any sort of document editing. I get that you can still do it on desktop, but it would be nice for certain Metro apps, too.

It doesn't even make sense either. I use 50/50 all the time, it was among the most useful improvements of Windows in the past decade.

Metro apps are suppose to be responsive to many different screen sizes so I don't know why Microsoft didn't just make the divider a thing you could drag and resize the two windows with

oh, that's right, because it was designed for tablets first and desktops never.

Are you on the RTM? I was really hoping it would be decent by release.

Its decent but still not final.... you can tell because it does not look like the xbox music concept back from e3.

I spent most of yesterday playing with it and overall its really good... all the little bugs I had in the rp are gone (menus disappearing, video loading in the background, etc) although you would expect that now that this is final.

Actually somewhat encouraged by the games.... the xbox live ones are all very smooth (tried solitare, wordament and pinball fx2) and the xbox live integration is seamless. When/If better games come this could be a really good gaming platform if mgs actually gets involved and puts some of their marquee franchises on the tablet and gets people like epic/activision/ubisoft doing the same.

The biggest negative I have found so far is related to skydrive.... really thought with the new update to the web they would have let you designate skydrive folders as video or music (along with docs and pics now).... then anything with that designation would seamlessly load in the music/video players.... has been alluded to such a feature coming by paul thurrott but it is still not there.

The 3rd party apps are pretty good but still need work (in general) but it is encouraging to see some big names in there already such as sky news, syfy, cw, sec digital network (and actually made by those companies and not some odd 3rd party developer like you see in wp7 more often than not.... gives me faith this platform will not languish from a dev support perspective like wp7 has). That said the proof will be in how quickly updates come... if the apps start getting regular updates (like android) I will be very encouraged with the app situation on win8.

yeah i use VLC as my default but i still have the video and music stuff installed at the moment.

its better, but if you didn't like it in RP then i don't think you will like it in RTM. I'm sure it is fine if you buy their video/music content, but using my own content? meh, its nothing special. We are still 2 months from release so maybe there is more to come. (honestly i just need better metadata management)

yep, very annoying. i'm thinking they made that 1/3 size to make it easier for devs to develop for the phone, seems like the same size. why they didn't tell devs to also make a 50/50 split though, who knows.
