So when people say win 8 has good multi monitor support, what does that mean? Can I finally get the taskbar appearing on the non primary monitors without a 3rd party software?
Yup i'm using multiple monitors and the taskbar appears in all of them.

The time/date/sound/internet/toolbar icons only appear in my main screen though.

Also, has anyone gotten bogus UAC prompts about file privileges needing admin rights when both you're admin and you've disabled UAC? What the hell is this? A bug, a regression to Vista? I'd rather not want to resort to completely disabling all UAC at registry level, but if that's how it's going to be I will.

The only time i got this was trying to manually deleting unneeded files from my Windows.old installation... But they have a utility to remove that, so didn't bothered much...

No option to download the "Pro" version off Technet? Any reason, at home, I'd want the Pro version or should I just run with the standard edition?

This will be a one time thing. I hope all my games work fine. With Steam, do I have to worry about backing up any game saves (Portal 2 and Skyrim)?

"No option to download the "Pro" version off Technet? Any reason, at home, I'd want the Pro version or should I just run with the standard edition?"

The Technet versions are Pro and Enterprise, so far as I can tell (the key page actually refers to them as Pro). The untitled one (Just "Windows 8") is apparently Professional.

Ah! Thanks. I downloaded the untitled one and installed it last night.

Anyone having problems after installing over windows 7? HDD light is always on and browsing the web on the desktop is slow to unresponsive. Before anyone asks Yes, I have a msdn sub so that's where I got my key.

Specs:
I5 2500k
1tb HDD OVER 800 GB Left
HD 5870
16 GB ram

I can't even get into safe mode!! Getting a page fault error. Help?
Oh btw I can't shutdown either...it just keeps restarting.

Im getting a lot of hard freezes on my iMac, kind of a shame because other than that I', really enjoying Windows 8

The new sounds in the RTM remind me of the Dreamcast a bit.

Also either the difficulty in solitaire skyrocketed or i've been having the worst luck ever, since i've lost 31 out of the 31 games i've played.
Or i just suck.

Thurrot writes about the very early Skype app:
http://www.winsupersite.com/article/windows8/windows-8-secrets-skype-app-windows-8-144047

And HP isn't done with tablets yet, forms a new mobile unit and brings in the former MeeGo guy from Nokia:

Running the new Mobility unit will be Alberto Torres, who departed Nokia after running its MeeGo operations — operations that were doomed once it became clear that CEO Stephen Elop would be taking the company down the Windows Phone path. He'll be reporting directly to Bradley and starting in early September. Interestingly, HP's "soon-to-be launched commercial tablet" will remain in the charge of James Mouton, who runs the PC group.

How this all relates to Gram is unclear: the focus of this Mobility GBU certainly seems to be wider than webOS alone, though it stands to reason that Gram's work may fall under Mobility's sphere of interest and influence.
http://www.theverge.com/2012/8/17/3249425/hp-mobility-gbu-consumer-tablets-alberto-torres

So he left Nokia, because they focused on Windows Phone and now he joined HP to work on Windows tablets. That went well. Also, third time's a charm, HP.

Sorry if this has been asked, but when can DreamSpark/MSDNAA students expect to get Windows 8? Got my SSD the other day (yay!) but wanna hold off plugging it in until I can get Windows 8 on it.

Sounds like Microsoft is going to allow people to install OEM versions:

You have to agree to the EULA before you use Microsoft's Windows 8 OS. However, a new article at ZDNet.com claims that Microsoft has made some changes in its software agreements for Windows 8 that make them easier to read compared to EULAs that have been provided in the past for previous versions of Windows.

More importantly for regular consumers, Microsoft is allowing them to purchase and install the version of Windows 8 that's normally reserved for OEMs. This under a new Windows 8 license called Personal Use License for System Builder.

So I use iTunes and Zune for my media, but today I tried to use the "Metro" Music and Video apps but they doesn't detect any media in my library, anyone else has this problem??

I haven't used the app in a while (because it sucks), but I remember it having issues picking up my music that was on an external drive. Haven't tried the RTM yet though

lol how is that fixed ?

The best part is when they say the IPAD 3 has no operating system ?

I wrote "fixed" because he was comparing a tablet to an operating system. And i just posted the first video on youtube. And yea i was laughing at that. What do they think iOS is? And the pricing is also a guess.

I think he just wants to see what the final verison of windows 8 is like in comparison to the ipad.

I like when they say the ipad 3 doesn't have a keyboard.

It's hard to compare them now just because 99% of what makes the iPad great are the apps to go along with it.

While developers have (hopefully) been working on apps and games for a long time, the vast majority haven't been able to do anything with them officially, or submit them to the store. Now that the MSDN release came out last week, I think the store is open or will be open for submissions soon. Right now, all the apps in the RTM store are from a small set of Microsoft employees and external developers.

Most importantly, if you want to compare it to the iPad, you need hardware. There isn't any Windows 8 or Windows RT hardware in peoples' hands yet, which makes it hard to do that comparison.

This isn't the case of windows phone , windows 8 is going to have a huge install base quite quickly and developers know this. So we will see the good IOS apps and andriod apps hit quickly.

Also the non RT verisons will have acess to decades of windows programs.

Well, the Windows 8 Pro and Windows 8 Enterprise are up on Microsoft's Volume Licensing Site for work (yay for working in education!). Thinking of downloading it for work and giving it a shot to see if it's improved at all over the preview....

It definitely has, since it's not as buggy.

So guys, what do you think? Full-on in-place upgrade from Windows 7 to Windows 8? Shall I take the plunge? I just clean installed a few months ago and definitely don't want to deal with that again.

I had a spare 64 GB SSD laying around... surely you have a spare HDD... or is this a laptop?

I don't think I've ever upgraded to an OS by overwriting my old one :/ I believe in clean install considering the drama an OS collects over the years,

This is for you, markot.

Windows 8 Tip: Overcoming Library Limitations

...

Adding removable storage to a library

Consider a typical Windows 8 tablet, like the Samsung Series 7 Slate. This machine has a relatively paltry 64 GB SSD barely large enough to hold Windows 8, Office 2013, and my music collection. But what if I want to bring some movies along to watch on a plane or whatever? The device does have a micro-SD slot, so I purchased a 32 GB micro-SD card, loaded it up with movies and took it on the road. Playing movies off the card is simple enough: Just open File Explorer, find the movie you want, and play it. But if you try to add that location to the Videos library, you’re out of luck. Windows 8 will not let you add non-hard drive-based removable storage to a library.

(Though you can add a USB hard drive to a library, you’ll see this same error with other USB-based storage devices, like memory sticks.)

The workaround for this one is simple. Create a shortcut on your desktop that points to the removable device. Give it an obvious name (like “SD” in my case) and then move it to the root of C: (as in C:\SD) or somewhere else convenient. Then, add that location (the shortcut) to the library. Voila! It works. On the Samsung tablet, this is in fact the only location I use for the Videos library

It's weird that Microsoft overlooked this. SD cards for tablet is a must, so not being able to add one to the library (without workarounds, because your average user doesn't want to be bothered with these) is a big inconvenience.

BTW. How much space does iOS take? I've just noticed that Windows 8's size on PC is about 13GB. I presume the tablet version is no different, since the desktop (although limited) is still there. That's quite a lot for a machine that only has 64GB of in-built memory.

An article demonstrating why Windows 8 will be a massive failure for Microsoft. Expect this sort of thing to become commonplace in the next six months or so.

So many wrong facts in that article.

The Metro interface is Windows 8. The desktop that you’re used to is also there, but it’s built as a separate app. Think of it this way: Metro is the shell. The desktop is an app within that shell. If you want to start Steam, you’ll want to launch the Desktop app, and then launch Steam.

This is insanity. This is Windows 8.

I run Steam from the tile, I don't have to hit the Desktop tile first.

Metro apps don’t have any window controls. If you want to swap between apps, you have to make a convoluted mouse gesture - move the mouse to the top left of the screen, and then down to select the window. You can’t minimise the app, and there’s no on-screen preview of what’s running to help you quickly switch between programs.

Alt-tab works just as it always has.

It’s harder than ever to turn the sodding thing off

It took me nearly half an hour to work out how to turn off my PC.

And after he figured out how to use it (I guess he's never heard of Google and would rather spend half and hour stumbling around the interface) how hard is it to shut down? This complaint is only valid once.

I could go on but the article is terrible, most of it is complaining about the quality of the preview apps and not the OS.

Just FYI, I was really confused why I couldn't find W8 Pro in my MSDN downloads section. Then I found when you click the Product Keys button for W8, it presents you with options for both Regular and Pro. Simple.

I run Steam from the tile, I don't have to hit the Desktop tile first.
Speaking of Steam, will we need to go through Metro with kbm if we plan on making a htpc with the Big Picture Mode or will we be able to have Steam start up at launch and only need the controller?

This is a classic example of a writer who has already made up their mind and is looking for reasons. You can see there's an express failure to establish cause and effect.

It's an opinion validation piece for those who have already formed an opinion agreeing with the author. It may as well be a top ten list with no further words and it still would have read with the same level of coherence.

There already plenty of negative previews of MS' new OS:

PC Makers' Hopes For Windows 8 Ebb

Why Windows 8 is terrible for desktops

Windows 8 belongs on older PCs like a fish needs a bicycle

Early Reviews Of Microsoft's Windows 8 Are Not Good

It just goes on and on and the tide of negativity will only rise when the official release date looms closer. MS' biggest problems is that a large number of their biggest supporters won't support an OS that pushes a tablet OS down the throat of desktop users. They want all the niceties of Windows 8 without having to use Metro. And they're absolutely right.

Metro works on tablets but it should have been completely optional for desktop users. MS wouldn't listen however, they're so desperate to win back the tablet market from Apple and Google that they made it the central innovation of their desktop os (where it had no place) It's a huge gamble, if Metro fails (and it looks that way), it could take down their OS business with them. It could become a bigger failture than anything they've ever created.

Personally I hope this damn Frankenstein completely implodes on the market, taking down everyone responsible for this monstrosity. I've been a MS fan for 20 years, always the first on the block to install a new Windows OS, but I hate hate hate what MS has done with Windows 8. Get that fucking Metro crap away from my desktop OS.

isn't that how Microsoft described it?

I don't know. But if they did, they certainly don't understand it the same way this guy does.
From my understanding, Metro looks more like an overlay to desktop. The desktop is still there, running beneath Metro all the time.

Also, this made me laugh:
But the search function rarely finds what you want - it will only search within Metro apps, and you have to specify the app you want to search in separately.
If you’re using Metro apps, there is no clock
How can you lie so blatantly to your readers?
