[Windows Central] Forget about Steam in the Xbox PC app — I want Game Pass in the app I actually use

If Game Pass were available in Steam, would you be more likely to subscribe?

I'd be more likely to but there's still a 99.9% probability that I won't use it outside of the rare occasion that I want to try out a particular game or two for a few hours and then refund the service.

Steam's refund policy allows me to do that for the most part anyway so it's neither here nor there.

If I would get the Steam versions of games i 100% would subscribe to gamepass

Would try out stuff I have not bought and not be afraid to loose progress if i cancel sub - i could just get the game on steam a steam sale
Exactly, its ridiculous the GP versions are generally the worse versions compared to Steam.

This concept is always kind of dumb. Valve / Sony / Nintendo / whatever 3rd party store has no reason to participate in some super cheap subsidized game sub that includes a bunch of 3rd party games.

And outside of consoles probably doesn't make sense even to allow first party game subs to work due to how micro transactions aren't forced to go through Steam/etc.

But that's the only remotely feasible option; a version of Gamepass that doesn't include any 3rd parties.

If Microsoft is firing Xbox employees to keep the lights on, they're not going to hand Valve 30% of their subscription revenue. It's why they're pushing for open stores on all hardware - Xbox, iPhone, PlayStation - because it removes these types of cuts and allows them to profit directly from other people's hardware base. Steam is different - its a platform within a platform. Microsoft can't force Valve's hand here, so, either Valve comes down from their cut or Microsoft keeps Game Pass off of Steam.

To be honest, I think too many of us already have a huge library we won't play on Steam. I don't know if we should supplement it with Gamepass.

It's not about the short term revenue, it's about owning the customer. If they go down this route, they're creating customers for Valve, not for themselves.

Or at least, that's the way they view it. I promise you, putting Game Pass on Steam is not a new or novel idea that the Xbox team hasn't considered.

More fantasy nonsense that ignores all the realities of business.

Valve is more successful at selling games than Xbox. Valve has strong brand loyalty among their users specifically because they are a privately owned business who doesn't do stupid corporate shit. Valve has no reason to give away anything to Microsoft.

Microsoft has no reason to give Valve money for anything. They're not going to buy Steam, and if they did the user base would run away from them. Giving Valve a cut of their subscription revenue makes no sense when they don't have enough subscribers as it is. Finally, Steam users are well aware of the alternative services and storefronts out there. It's not a matter of marketing to them - they just don't want those other storefronts and services. They want Steam as it is today.
