I got fed up with waiting for AT&T (and bored) so I've got NoDo installing on my Focus right now :P

I guess I'm just paranoid...when the update finally DOES release, is my phone gonna fuck up or anything?

I have a Focus btw. Thinking about trying the "easy" update method.

I didn't even have to do the easy update. I unbranded my phone and got notifications for both February and March, no unplugging my computer from the internet. I did have to erase all of the media from my phone tho :/

does that mean your contacts too?

Nah. I just hit the erase media button in Zune which gets rid of all media. Contacts and apps stay. I only did that because I was getting the timeout error

I was in at&t store today and talking to the manager of the store, well apparently he's a big Windows Phone 7 fans. So we got on to the subject of update, he said he was told the date he's hearing is April 7th or something. So may be At&t will really get testing done and we might actually get official update. Anyway, just rumor from store manager but it's nice to see that he actually use windows phone 7.

I don't see why it would, it would just notice that you already have the update (that if you change the phone branding back).

The AT&T store I go to still has Windows Phone 7 near the front in a prime spot. Not sure if they're just lazy, since I've read reports that they've been moving them to the back in other stores. All of the employees had on "4G" shirts, so I'm guessing, with only one new non-4G phone on the horizon, MS is going to struggle to stay relevant until the hardware refresh in the fall. The Android onslaught does not stop. I'm guessing MS is going to make another big push for the holidays, I'd love to see dual core, front facing cameras, and 4g as part of the next set of standardized hardware of phones from them.

Quick question guys. Is there a google talk or beejive type in client on wm7... Oh and netflix

And how is bettery life on the focus compared to an iPhone (I have a 3g)? I'm thinking of getting the focus.

I am ready for 4G Windows Phones already.

Everyone is ready for 4G phones, but nobody's ready for what actual 4G phones are as of right now. That basically means bigger phone bulk, meh battery life, and spotty 4G service at best. I'd LOVE for all phones across all carriers no matter the brand if they were as fully usable as 3G is now.

The IM situation on Windows Phone 7 is pathetic at the moment. There are gtalk clients, but I doubt any of them work that well. There is a wonderful Netflix app, which combined with the awesome Focus screen, makes it even better.

In terms of battery life, the Focus has excellent battery life, probably better than any other 4" phone out there. It won't compare to iPhone 4 I don't think, but certainly as good as the one on the 3g that I used to own as well. Charging takes a bit longer though.

No iPhone 3G in these charts though:

I'm looking forward to MIX 2011 :)

This year, MIX will highlight Microsoft’s commitment to web standards and HTML5, build on the excitement for IE9, and showcase the future of the Windows Phone developer ecosystem. Plus, we’ll unveil what’s new for developers in the next version of Windows Phone.

They have 13 sessions on the upcoming application platform. There must be a lot of new APIs coming if they have 13 sessions.

Flory is decent enough, supports GTalk and Facebook Chat

holy shit. I should have gone for that iPhone 4. LOL

no wonder my battery drains like a bitch when browsing on the focus

The phones at the top all have smaller screens, and there's no way the Evo has better battery life than my Focus. No. Way.

So after hacking around with my friend's Android G1 some more to Gingerbread, I think I've set my eyes on a WP7 phone for sure.

Tired of running unnecessary customizing circles I have to go through to get an up to date experience on Android. I've dealt with it for a long time on Windows Phone 6.5 and became accustomed to making my own ROM for it. I don't want to deal with this again with Android, so definitely that is off my list.

Yes there is a Nexus S phone, but honestly, I don't know if Google has really settled its issues with battery management and multitask handling.

Thankx for the reply. It makes my decision a bit easier. Sad to hear IM clients are lagging behind tho it's still one of my most used apps on my phones.

The best place to go for an up to date experience is with Apple.

I am just curious about something if I do full phone reset after the update will the phone reverse back to pre-nodo or does it just erase data but retain the update OS?

pretty sure it will keep the same OS version.

a reset just erases the data on the internal storage and the sd card (if you have one)

You will still be at NoDo. I had to do it unfortunately. Was changing my PIN and then I forgot it -_-

LOL, sorry I shouldn't be laughing. Is that the only way to recover phone with forgotten PIN?

I am curious if the phone still be unlock if you unlock it. I am thinking may be in the future if I need to nuke my phone will I still be able to sideload all these home brew apps. I really getting used to having them, it's so nice to be able to toggle wifi/data etc instead of having to go through that setting menu (Microsoft really need to somehow streamline that screen, too many text).

Can't answer that one. I forgot to do the "prevent from re-locking" stuff before I did the NoDo update. Restoring a backup may bring you back to your unlocked state, I didn't think to try it (and no way in hell am I risking it after all the crap I went through with that hard reset). I'm planning to keep all my backups on an external drive just in case :P

Backups are stored here if anyone is interested:
C:\Users\yourname\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows Phone Update

yes I do love my beautiful screen...

I really could never go back to iPhone after the WP7 experience, regardless of current shortcomings.

Restoring does bring you back to whatever state your phone was, that's what I did to get the phone unlock again.

Thanks for the info.

What was wrong with the iPhone for you?

nothing... just see it as boring and ugly UI now since using Metro and all of the other subtle little details about how the OS does things that make using WP7 a joy. Feature-wise iPhone has just about all anyone needs though.

Pretty much the same. Whenever I use a touch or go and use say my Mom's iPhone it does everything I want it to. Yet I just feel so bored after experiencing the WP7 UI.

I had been using white for a couple of months up until yesterday.

I do prefer the white though, but it's good to change occasionally.

It's interesting to see the role reversal in the mobile space. This is the kind of thing (i.e., the 'joy of using' the UI) that often comes up the other way around in Apple and Microsoft discussions. Sometimes the user experience does count for a lot.

I still maintain it was an impressive feat that Microsoft was able to pull off such a great, smooth and unique UI right out of the gate, regardless of whatever other issues there may or may not be.

Wait until sometime next year when battery life is normal across the board. Oh that an coverage. Even where I'm at, in a heavily covered Verizon 4G LTE zone our test phones get spotty signals... Our building was retro-fitted to basically be a Verizon tower (VZ came out and pay for the install, something like $300,000) and we still have issues 'at times'. We're standing on an active tower with 100% signal.. still spotty.

note : VZ paid for this because we pay them more than double that a month. Don't get me started on how much we pay AT&T lol

Bottom line is 4G rocks when it works right and the trade offs are too high right now. 12 months before I'll invest more than $1 into a 4G phone. The average smart phone user doesn't need anything more than 50% crap 3G signal. 4G is a fluff, marketing and really only benefits users who pay for unlimited data and tethering. Mobile Hotspot in a 4G area is nice .. but not that nice. I could have got a Thunderbolt for my wife for free and cheap as shit monthly payments.. I got her a Droid X instead to save the hassle and a few bucks. She doesn't work with me, so it wouldn't have been free.

4G is here, but its an infant. It needs time to grow.

Look like chevron7 team just release phone update software that does not require hacking.
http://blog.walshie.me/2011/04/04/so-who-wants-windows-phone-updates-like-right-now/

I am glad they did this, looks like they tool from Ms, is this Ms way at getting around carrier?
This is what I was hoping MS would do: work behind the scenes to get the update out to the power users who aren't afraid to get their hands dirty. HTC does this with xda, though no one will actually admit it, even though there are so many rom leaks its impossible that its not coordinated. Look how quiet the official wp7 blog has gotten since the first update hack. The rest of the users don't care and they'll get the update whenever but you have to make sure the vocal power users are covered and have a way to get the features without delay. This tool and the chevron team are the best thing to happen to Windows Phone, and I think MS knows it.

Going back to the "joy" of the operating system, I remember posting on this thread that as a sign of protest I would go back to using my gingerbread equipped nexus one until I got the nodo update. Well, that experiment didn't last very long...I just couldn't handle the switch, its just so much better using wp7. I left Apple out of boredom, and they haven't changed their interface any, so I doubt I'll be going back there anytime soon either.

Checked out the phones in person and am glad I got the Surround. For whatever reason I am just not impressed with the Focus, not even the screen. It looks dim to me.

I'll post my thoughts after getting it. I am a longtime iPhone user (since day 1) and think some of the comments about the UI differences between iOS and WP7 may apply to me.

Just used the new tool from Chevron7 team to update my Samsung Focus. Worked like a charm! It was very easy to use. Had to run the program twice to get to pre-Nodo and then Nodo. If anyone was hesitant to update before because of unbranding your phone, well now you have no reason to wait anymore :)

the programme seemed to work for me, until it had to contact the update server to download nodo, where it failed. not a slight on the programme itself, just my utterly rubbish university internet. huff.
ah well, it's only april, can't be too long until orange send me the march update, right? ;)

Won't it still have to go through your university internet?

yeah, via the zune software it does (and thus times out) but for some reason the mac 'windows phone connector' seemed to work fine for the pre-nodo/february update. maybe i'll be proven wrong and be left nodo-less (... with doughnuts?) but here's hoping the official channel works.

So have other people with the HTC HD7 (TMOUS) gotten the update? They've been "delivering" it for days now but I haven't gotten crap. Using the timing trick and turning off my wifi and data doesn't work either. What the heck. I got a notice for the February update along with everyone else last week when TMO released it but nothing for this and it keeps saying my phone is up to date!

I got it the day after they started rolling it out.
