that'll boost sales

It will. There is still a VAST demographic out there that is not interested in gaming at this point. Microsoft is targeting consumers who believe, for some bizarre reason, that it takes too long to do stuff on other phones. While there is some truth to that, I don't personally see it as a selling point. However, you can go with a stripped down "smart feature phone" and get a lot of people to buy it.

Nothing yet. I kind of expect a iPhone-like yearly refresh, I guess we'll see how it plays out.

If you take out all the good stuff like Xbox Live and everything else that requires the minimum spec to operate then what are you really left with?

who wants a smartphone that can't do anything? just buy a normal phone for 1/10 the price.

if they keep the current spec as a baseline going forward that seems like it would ok because you know it works but turning everything off so they can sell some cheap shitty nokia phones? who thinks that's a good idea?

There are people that just want basic stuff like Facebook and music and a few apps. These phone will be sold in other countries as entry level device. We are just use to subsidized pricing and finance something that is not an option for many.

You still left with a very good UI, far better than most feature phone or Symbian.

I use mine for work. And it works way better than my old phone. It just smoothly interoperates with all aspects of my work life. Of course, it helps that I work at Microsoft and on Xbox Live games. But seriously, it was the smoothest transition ever. I think it would probably shock a lot of Blackberry users how seamless it is.

What IS it? The website didn't really help. I can't tell if it's a metaphor or not...

Its really just an app about alcohol :P It's probably the best looking and performing app I've ever used though, by far.

It is pretty cool though, if you're a drinker. It has a bunch of drink recipes, you can put in the alcohol in your cabinet and it'll give you additional ingredients you can buy (starting from least expensive) that would satisfy the requirements for multiple drinks, and so on.

Somebody should probably make a cooking app like this.

It's a cocktail recipe program and beautiful one. There is an "expansion pack" for it that commemorate MIX event with Microsoft theme drinks.

I agree it's one of the nicest looking app on Windows Phone or any phone for that matter.

So guys, venue pro or the hd7? Wanted to get the focus, but its gonna be a while before it launches over here.
You should probably just try both and get what you like better. I have the HD7 and think it's a great device. Especially the kick stand (which I never use) is great. ;)

It's always been touted as one of the best examples of the WP7 interface. It is pretty damn amazing looking.
Thanks for sharing. Tried it for a couple of minutes and can definitely see why people think it's one of the best Apps out there (performance, interface, etc.)

The keynote will start at 9 AM PST, that's in 35 minutes.

snap, who was the girl in your old avatar?

isn't today just IE9?

I thought WP7 is in tomorrow's keynote. But I could be wrong. (I intend to watch both anyway, even though I have no idea what they would even show in the IE one)

They'll probably show IE9 on WP7, including Silverlight 4 (if the rumor is true).

"This year, Dean Hachamovitch (IE Vice President) will be back on the MIX stage as he returns as the day 1 keynoter at MIX11. Eight platform previews, one beta, one release candidate, and one final version of Internet Explorer 9 later - it’s a keynote you won’t want to miss.

For the second year in a row, Joe Belfiore, who oversees Windows Phone Program Management, and is responsible for the design and software product definition of forthcoming generations of Windows phones and Zune devices will keynote MIX. By his side will be Scott Guthrie, who heads Microsoft's .NET Developer Platform, where he runs the development teams responsible for delivering Silverlight, Visual Studio and the .NET Framework technologies for building client and Web applications.
"

Seems like today is IE, tomorrow is WP7/Silverlight.

brotkasten could you make a new thread for MIX?
You are the most informed and i am sure MIX deserves its own thread
I don't think that MIX is really that newsworthy, except for the keynotes. It's really more interesting if you're actually there and get to see the sessions.

Keep pressing F5, it works again for me.

Working fine for me....

And nothing wp7 related so far.... just some ie10 improvements (mainly talking speed on their own demo apps... big surprise they run faster than chrome). Hardware acceleration is pretty cool though.

Mix is going on now but the Windows Phone sessions had been labeled TBD. They’ve now been propagated and it gives a hint as to what to expect from tomorrow’s Keynote speech (that should discuss Windows Phones). Of note, here are some sessions and you’ll see the sensor access is likely a reference to the compass and camera (thus enabling augmented reality), new data is either local databases and/or more folder access (like the ability to use \videos and other drives), plenty of fast switching/multitasking and they’re fixing live tiles:

What’s Coming Next to the Windows Phone Application Platform:
  • Going Mobile with Your Site on Internet Explorer 9 and Windows Phone 7
  • Mini-Session: Get Ready for Fast Application Switching in Windows Phone
  • What’s New in the Windows Phone Developer Tools?
  • Multitasking in the Next Version of Windows Phone, Part II: Using Background Agents
  • Sensor Access in the Next Version of Windows Phone
  • What’s New for Windows Phone Development with Silverlight?
  • New Data Access Features Coming to Windows Phone
  • Enhanced Push Notifications & Live Tiles for Windows Phone
Windows Phone Mix Sessions Reveal AR, Local Data and Changes To Live Tiles

They're going to open up more APIs, kinda what we expected.

I just downloaded the free test of Cocktail Flow. Holy shit - this thing is amazing. One of the most impressive apps I've seen on any phone.

They could probably make all kind of money if they did the same for actual food recipes.

Any of you guys try Dude, WIMU (where is my update) app? Of course At&t still said testing but what interesting is the data it collect. I am not sure how the data is being collected. It just said 1500 users locally and 2500 global so what they mean by local, is that by region?

By far the largest device is of course the Focus i917, it's easily 3 x the next WP7 device. Majority is of course running 7004 OS (cheer to At&t our premier carrier).

It's quite the opposite. Everyone is waiting for the Mango update to jump on WP7. HTC and Samsung already confirmed that they're going to ship new phones and Acer and ZTE confirmed that they're working on handsets for this or next year.

May be LTE Nokia is coming? I would wait too at this point. Oct/Nov only 6 months away. Though suprise they just now hiring for 4G development ...

I don't think we can make assumptions on how long development of LTE stuff has gone on based the job posting. Looks like it is just for a regular position on the team and since they are working on LTE stuff, the new guy should know how to do it too.

When is the WP7 MIX session going to occur?

On another note ... since we don't have anything new to update about our premier carrier .. let throw off the mob by making another update blog. LOL.

http://wmpoweruser.com/official-nod...-is-no-update-also-new-update-blog-announced/
It's not a blog, just a support site with more information about the updates, fixes and workarounds.
"Update Central brings together step-by-step instructions, troubleshooting steps for common errors, and other useful updated-related info."

I've got NoDo now and I'm really happy with this phone, but every time I read the comments on the official blog, I get depressed again. At least the number of responses has died down since the homebrew solutions came out. MS needs to embrace homebrew even more and use them as an unofficial channel to deliver updates to the early adopters. I don't see how they'll avoid another fiasco for mango.

It's nice to have that all in one place, not sure why they don't do that in the first place but that is probably by-product of Microsoft troubleshooting guide for Windows.

I like how his blog he try very hard to not mention the carrier in question but refer to the three phones instead....and in two days we will be out of early April and into mid-April.

About an hour until the keynote starts.... anybody want to make some guesses about what will be shown? (or how long it will actually take them to deliver mango... since that is pretty much all we have talked about the past 5 pages) ;)

My list:

Mango:
New xbox live version announced for mango finally bringing turn by turn multiplayer to xbox live games (live multiplayer over wifi adhock network like zunehd)
More details on the office skydrive integration
Updated version of the 3rd party multitasking (the initial version just didn't look like it fit in with the metro UI.... I expect some slight tweaks to make it look smoother and more metro like)
Zune DJ coming for the phone.
Show off a way to save camera settings.
Would love to say there will be new hubs but I doubt it. (really would love a local and news hub or more hubs in general)
turn by turn nav for bing and image/video search

Mango will be deployed late november worldwide (give a somewhat hard date because of the issues with the first)

Mango 3rd party multitasking and ie9 is great but how about updating Bing and Bing maps? The newer hspa+ android phones run circles around my WP7 phone in speed and features.

I wonder if they're going to bother with a real Bing app for WP7. They updated the mobile website to HTML5 few weeks ago and WP7 will be able to access it after the Mango update.

Today, we launched updates to the Bing for Mobile browse (m.bing.com) making it easier for you to get and view information while on the go. New features in this update include better and faster image search, real-time transit and directions, app search for the iPhone, and more. Utilizing HTML5, the new features are offered on Smartphone browsers for the iPhone and Android. If you have a Windows Phone 7 device, don’t worry, Windows Phone 7 just announced that it will support HTML5 later this year so these updates will work great at that time.

Now let’s take a closer look at the new features:

  • Transit Directions and Real-Time Transit
  • Image Search
  • Shopping
  • Weather Update
  • App Search
  • Movies

These are the latest updates. We hope you enjoy and find these features helpful while using Bing on the go. We value your feedback, so let us know what you think.
http://www.bing.com/community/site_...obile-browse-experience-gets-even-better.aspx

Sure, half of the features are only accessible in NA, but that's how Bing rolls. At least they're bringing their Streetview competitor to Europe.

xbulletholes said:
nokia's partnership will help with that, won't it? omni maps is meant to be pretty good in europe.
Yep. It looks like they're doing the street mapping in collaboration with Nokia's Navteq.

Here's my MIX11 Windows Phone 7 keynote bitch template.
  • This is still missing
  • omg, they didn't announce my favorite feature? brb, gonna buy an iPhone
  • sigh, we still don't have a date
  • but what about the update after Mango?
  • what? my first gen device won't support it?

Quick, someone should do a Bingo card for the keynote. We still have 20 minutes before it starts! :lol

I think they'll focus on the things that are relevant to developers, like multitasking and additional APIs. From the session names, I think we already know the majority of what they will talk about.

Nice to see the live blog actually works on WP7. My work blocked it -_-
