I guess all the 1500+ new APIs aren't done yet. ;)

That looks familiar. ;)

Did someone say there was a new crazy lady video?!

One thing I'm still a bit confused about that they didn't show at Barcelona was Live Agents. It sounds like local notifications combined with Live Tiles but I can't get my head around it because bloggers seem to be writing different things.

From what I gather, they are basically wrapped up background tasks that the OS can assign CPU time to based on different scenarios such as battery usage and such. They can also receive events from the OS for your program to handle. I believe one example was an event such as the phone being plugged into a charger.

They are modular tasks for your application to assign to a task queue of some sort most likely. So you want a file to download in the background or an alert to pop up at a certain time, you create a Live Agent and plop it on the queue. This type of standardization of tasks lets users have an easier way of seeing what tasks are running and which ones they want to stop/pause.

But I haven't read anything about them and I could be completely off base here. But it sounds interesting.

I couldn't watch the keynote because I was out but I did watch the Channel 9 interview with Joe and the crazy lady. The impression that I got back at MWC hasn't changed--all very compelling additions that should solve many complaints. (how many times do people whine about IM and video/camera applications in here?)

I want your impressions after you watch the keynote. Barcelona is old hat.

Is all this new information thread-worthy?

EDIT: Watching the Joe Belfiore vid where he shows off the apps. Liking the Marketplace enhancements, and the "Extras" in Search is AWESOME.

In case anyone hasn't seen, he demo'd doing a standard search for "movies", which brought up a list of movies showing near his location (a new feature) in the standard web search. He tapped into the list and picked "Source Code". This gave basic information on the movie and showtimes, but there is an "Extras" area he swiped to that pulls data from installed apps--in this case, IMDb. So he tapped IMDb and it took him straight to the Source Code IMDb page. Almost like an integrated Flixster.

While it might seem faster to go straight to the IMDb app, they seem to be stressing integrating the apps into the rest of the OS and not having them be so standalone. Almost like a search "hub".

And have they officially stated that the Live Tile limit will be lifted/increased? Can only imagine it would have to.

Perhaps the 'Gold' callout on the newly redesigned LIVE tile is an indication that multiplayer will be added and require a paid subscription.
Is there no multiplayer in any XBL game on WP7? I was surprised Full House Poker didn't have a mp part, but I certainly thought some game would have mp support in some way.

No sockets, no real-time multiplayer. It's only turn-by-turn until we get Mango.

Now that I have seen the entire keynote I actually think the coolest feature is the new live tile support (where you can pin things inside the app and they get their own live tile)..... the example was the amazon barcode scanner inside the amazon shopping app. There is a ton of potential for doing that kind of think but it seems like it is going to be a very difficult task in educating people what parts can be pinned (and most devs are probably going to ignore it)
I agree it will probably get ignored by many devs, but I think it would be pretty easy to make easily visible for users. Right now when you hold an an app you get the following as options:

pin to start
uninstall

They could easily list all of the things you can pin there. Something like:

pin app to start
pin barcode reader to start
uninstall

?

Damn ... shit just got real.

That Quantas app is a pretty realistic (and awesome) demo of how these new API's and dev features can really be utilized.

Between that and the 'extras' (apps communicating with each other) ... WP7 really seems like it can 1up the competing OS's in terms of speed, interactivity, and usefulness.

Agreed. Mango will make iOS it's bitch...pending the iOS update, of course.

It looked GOOD. Roll on Mango!

list summary... and yea that Quantas example of live tiles.....in video.. WOW.

Joe Belfoire explains the update process, why it took so long and how they've learned from the feedback received

Nearing 13,000 apps and developers are constantly producing quality over quantity

Improving developer opportunities through scale of user base and predictions of greatness by 2015 with market share

Nokia makes a brief appearance building excitement for joining the WP7 regime

16 more languages will be supported in Mango, increasing the number countries you can submit apps to the Marketplace from (to be 38) and where you can download apps (16 to 35)

Big changes to the app list in Mango with adding a letter jump list, search feature with live filtering and Marketplace search integration

Podcast support coming to US in the fall of 2011

Installing free apps from the Marketplace now only requires one click and download progress for all apps are shown in the app list

Built-in multitasking is shown with holding down the back button, and more 3rd party apps are being included in hubs

Search feature heavily improved with Bing integration with movies used as an example, info card are displayed just like restaurant searching

IE9 will be powering the web experience in Mango, bringing the same code base and rendering engine used on desktop (hardware acceleration etc.)

HTML5 speed reading on Mango out-sped both Android and iOS in a live comparison

A plethora of introduced capabilities for native apps to get richer and better integration
through use of sensors, multiple live tiles, background updates, SQL, data access and more

Gyroscope and compass support is added

Skype is announced and a demo presented with contacts and socket support

Personalized ringtones is displayed, adding new files with ease

Amazon's app demo uses sensors and can scan bar codes using the built-in camera through search to bring up products (a book was used as an example)

Live tiles can now be "deep-linked" into an app - example being the Amazon app scanner, one click from the home screen compared to opening the app, hitting search and then opening the scanner

Motion sensor introduced, combining both the compass and the gyroscope

Implementation of fast-app switching with apps being put to sleep and then re-awakened (demo with multitasking while Angry Birds was running)

As well as introducing multitasking with background functions (music, downloads, alarms etc.), battery life was sought to be improved in Mango

Live Agents allow developers to balance the problem in running background code while allowing users to maintain good battery life and not to run processes manually

Quantas app shown off with multiple live tiles present on the home screen with seperate animation, content and deep-links, with background alarm management and GPS location along with processing calculations without user input

Joe Belfoire states the developer tools will be released next month (May)

Visual Studio 2010 demo is ran by Scott Guthrie displaying the capabilities of the device emulator running the game Mobile Maze

WP7 emulator is improved with gyroscope, accelerometer, GPS and multiple locations support along with multiple pre-built gestures (shake device to refresh/reload etc.)

Debugging is much easier, troubleshooting performance issues and problems with apps in VS through GPU, CPU and execution measurements etc.

Mango performance increase is shown with a demo of a two WP7 devices (one without Mango) running the same apps and the same code

1500+ APIs coming to Mango and WP7 developers

Kik Messenger is headed to Windows Phone 7

The stuff Joe showed off in that video is ridiculous. I really can't wait to see what developers come up with for all of the interoperability that seems to be opening up. I just hope and pray that Microsoft can get it out in good order and get another round of advertising to really show off what the system is capable of. Obviously the next rendition of iOS will probably be available by then, but I have a hard time thinking that it'll be as cool as this seems to me.

Not to mention it's doubtful the dev tools will be nearly as nice. So even if such API's become available, it'll take a bit longer to take advantage of.

So does Skype mean that the next hw reference chassis will support a front facing camera?
That would be awesome. More incentive to wait for a better WP7 phone on Sprint.

That Qantas app feels like a nerd dream that is thought about but when it comes down to it it's just so complicated to do correctly. Very cool.

1st thing that came to my mind as well in terms of new hardware. Beyond just made faster internals getting Skype made me think front facing camera.

Also I still think despite the full apology from MS it doesn't really well actually FIX anything. AT&T still hasn't pushed NoDo, and it's mid April. Considering it's still in the *Testing* phase I don't see how May won't hit before NoDo does. Quite frankly I see no reason this won't be the same case when Mango rolls around.

one thing I was disappointed to not see was no favorite or group tiles. Would be nice for grouping contacts, pictures or songs, artists, apps etc. onto one tile.

I guess they are concerned it would be seen as a "folder"

Definitely an iPhone person, but watching that video of some of the new features, I like some of the things they're doing. Part of me wants to say that I think they're doing a far better job with app switching (zoom out to a scrolling list of app screens) versus the iOS "row of apps" thing.

If anything, I hope stuff like this and advancements in Android make Apple put more effort into iOS. And I wish I was in a position to get stuff like Windows Phone phones for a while for doing reviews or whatnot, because I'd love to try one to see what I think without having to just jump into a contract and commit. (Plus, really, I'm not sure I'd want to actually switch platforms anyhow.)

Keep in mind that all the stuff shown today was exclusively developer-focused, since MIX is a developer conference. Some of that stuff made available to developers is also cool for us, but even things like searching your app list using the jump list had a developer focus because of the ability to search applications.

Things like updates to Bing Maps, contact groups, etc. are exclusively consumer-focused, and won't be revealed until later if they're there at all (not sure when)

I did notice that Bing Maps looked quite a bit different in the few glimpses we saw in the videos from today though, I just couldn't tell what all the new icons would be used for.

The one thing that stands head and shoulders above iOS (and Android to a lesser degree) is having live information on the 'home' page.

It is very pedestrian to use an iPhone and have to jump in and out of static icons, so lifeless.

So now whatsapp, Live Messenger and other similar programs can be done on WP7, right?
Actually, there is a more important question here:

Did they talk about adding more language support? That's one of the key things that makes me not recommend WP7 to my friends.

Yes, there are more language coming, it was part of the presentation.

16 more languages, he seems to imply a lot of Asian languages.

It's all very exciting to see of things to come but on the back of my mind the recent update and how it take to get here (for some it still is not) just make me temper my expectation. (probably a good thing).

I like the fact that he was honest about the update snafu and more up front about the process but I can sense his frustration and not able to speak for the carriers about what
testing they are doing. At least I got some sense that they are working to rectify this problem.

Also sometimes this fall is another thing that concern me. Apple would annonce things and have it out next week for consumers. Granted this is developer conferece and I was hoping he would say all the SDK will be available after conference but instead we get next month which I guess is better than "soon".

Overall I am impress about thing to come now let hope they can execute it and get it out in time to compete with the others. The OS they show is the OS that really should have been the launch OS last year. They really should have done limited launch of 7.0 and do full launch with next version. I think they can still salvage things with Nokia coming on board they can do a full re-launch this year with all new hardwares and feature complete OS that in some aspect even exceed what Apple and Android offer currently.

The rumors are saying Nokia plans to release 12 phones in 2012, haha. That's pretty crazy. I guess those of us that hopped on board at launch will have some interesting options when our contracts are up next year :D

Oh yeah, search for podcast directly from the phone is another new feature. Yeah, I didn't expect that. But he said US only. I don't understand why Podcast is restricted, is this because of contents that might be offensive in some country, copyright, license issue? Is this the same problem with iTune.

No, iTunes doesn't have that problem.

Microsoft ignoring the European Market is nothing new, though. Look at Xbox Live Gold and you'll get the idea. I hope that Nokia will do something about this before shipping phones, but I somehow doubt it.

Personally I think making a mass of phones is a bad idea.... they really should be making 2 or 3 hero phones (one high end hero phone, a low end one and one in the middle). I have to imagine part of that is the different cell network types around the world and not wanting to do universal phones.
