Did you watch the keynote? They didn't reveal everything. It was obvious that they wouldn't show new devices, because they aren't ready yet (few months 'till launch!). They mentioned 4G and a front facing camera, I think and three new OEMs (Acer, Fujitsu, ZTE).VanMardigan said:No big, surprising announcements for me. Its the details now that I want to hear about. The camera settings stuff, new devices, support for front facing cameras (was that mentioned at all?).
They didn't mention Zune at all, which is my biggest disappointment. Next stop is E3.user_nat said:Still no mention of expanding the Zune music service to new countries. Sigh.
That would be great. The software giant will allow Windows Phone developers to load the Mango operating system onto retail devices in around a months time. Speaking informally at a Windows Phone Mango VIP event in London on Tuesday, Achim Berg, Microsofts corporate vice president of Windows Phone marketing told WinRumors that the company would release the bits in around four weeks time. Microsofts Brandon Watson previously revealed, at MIX 2011, that Microsoft was working to allow developers to use Mango on Windows Phone hardware.
Congrats! I hope you'll enjoy it even without mango.SCHUEY F1 said:Picked up the Focus with an 8gig microSD. Love it so far. I need to explore the app store now.

YouTube always worked and still works just fine.snap0212 said:I agree, but you also have to take a look at the features that don't require an absurd amount of work to be implemented. It took Google many years to get to where they are now (Maps, etc.) and I don't expect Microsoft to work faster than Google, I really don't. I do, however, expect them to come out and tell me that they actually are working on it. What's their reason for Podcasts not being up here yet? What's their reason for YouTube not working if you don't change your phone so Youtube thinks you're in the US? We don't see any improvements anywhere and that worries me. Microsoft saying that the Podcast feature in Mango will only be available in the US shows me that they don't even think they'll have them this year. It's unsettling.
brotkasten said:YouTube always worked and still works just fine. Do you mean the video thumbnails for non-US regions? They fixed that with NoDo. And I have still no idea about the podcast situation and nobody asks them. But lets go back to Bing, because I have good news for you, my friend. It looks like you have full access to Bing Audio, Vision, Speech and German Turn-by-Turn navigation including spoken directions in German.

Consider yourself lucky. I know the build in the emulator doesn't represent the RTM (it's very buggy), but Germany is one of the few countries where Bing isn't limited to Bing Search and Bing Vision. So yeah, they're working on it.[/QUOTE]Can you check if it works in Canada as well?

Nokia's Executive VP of Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, has told Forbes that the forthcoming "small portfolio" of phones -- which are currently on target for a 2011 release --won't look like the renderings we've seen before. Not only that, we may see a CDMA Nokia handset at some point, as the company is "working in that direction."

Same as IE9 on the desktop I think.
Edit: Damn, just realized they really are going with that URL bar only UI for IE9. 3, 4, and 5 are important damn it! Should not take two steps to access those.

I actually appreciate having more screen real estate for the web page on mobile browsers, but they can make the url bar dynamically expand so that you can fit the other buttons without an extra click. But its not a huge deal either way. Its already a smoother browser than safari, now it will have even more functionality. If it ran flash, it would be just about perfect.giga said:HTML5 Test:

Or one can just make the URL bar non static so that it goes away once you scroll down a bit.VanMardigan said:I actually appreciate having more screen real estate for the web page on mobile browsers, but they can make the url bar dynamically expand so that you can fit the other buttons without an extra click. Google has the best solution to maximize real estate, but they have the luxury of a menu button. I actually would not like to have to scroll up to gain access to the url bar, so they'd have to do an apple thing where you click the to bar to jump to the top, but considering they use that area differently, that's not going to happen, so a dynamic url bar is better.giga said:Or one can just make the URL bar non static so that it goes away once you scroll down a bit.

How does it compare with peer mobile browsers?
RIM uses WebKit now as well in their OS. WebKit is pretty much bleeding edge in supporting the latest standards.VanMardigan said:Wtf is the blackberry browser doing up there? Kind of bullshit test is this?
Every WebKit browser should score 100/100. Safari does at least.Edit: how do the other browsers do on the acid test one?

1. Apps. Browsing the Marketplace is kind of a hassle and that's ignoring the fact that it's difficult to know what awesome apps are out there to download. As it stands, I haven't downloaded anything cool in a while. Recommendations anyone?
2. Email. As much as I like the email client, syncing with gmail is strange. Deleting emails just archives them (which is gmail's fault really, but other phones do this properly) and reading emails and having it sync back is kind of annoying. If I read or delete (read: archive) an email, I have to make sure to manually press the sync button to propagate the changes. Otherwise, there's no consistency between checking my mail on the phone and then checking my desktop a while after.
3. Notifications. This is where things are actually really great. I love notifications and I think they're implemented super well. The only thing that bothers me is a bug in email notifications, specifically. If I turn on a sound notification to play when I get new email, the phone will stutter and garble the sound, which is really irritating. I tried this on two different phones and it's the same problem. Hoped it would have gotten fixed in the last update, but not at all. I've resorted to just turning it off, which is fine, but I'd like to have a non-buggy notification.
Aside from all this, I'm happy with the general experience. Lots of niggling annoyances that hamper the overall platform, however.
Are you sure about that? I'm in Canada and I still don't get the thumbnails on YouTube links. Not that it matters really, I would use one of the external YouTube players anyways (SuperTube or LazyTube).brotkasten said:YouTube always worked and still works just fine. http://www.reuters.com/article/2011/05/25/zte-microsoft-idUSL3E7GP1CF20110525May 25 (Reuters) - ZTE Corp , China's No.2 network equipment maker, plans to launch smartphones based on Microsoft Corp's Mango operating system in Europe in the third quarter of this year, executives said.
"We are already working on a smartphone based on Mango and it will be launched in Europe," Jeffrey Fan, a vice-president from ZTE's terminal devices unit, told Reuters during a company event on Wednesday.
