Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Mango solidifies that I'll be sticking with WP. I usually jump ship every year back to the iPhone, but not this year.

I really hope they mass produced those stickers (or someone does), cause I really want one.

Official naming according to MSDN:

It's the OS version, not the branding. Just Like Windows 7 is NT 6.1.
I didn't say otherwise! :) Apple doesn't reference 10.6 or 10.7 on their Snow Leopard or Lion pages, but I still use it often.

No big, surprising announcements for me. Its the details now that I want to hear about. The camera settings stuff, new devices, support for front facing cameras (was that mentioned at all?).

Did you watch the keynote? They didn't reveal everything. It was obvious that they wouldn't show new devices, because they aren't ready yet (few months 'till launch!). They mentioned 4G and a front facing camera, I think and three new OEMs (Acer, Fujitsu, ZTE).

The camera settings seem to be fixed.

Is there a FAQ or any help document in the RTM or NoDo? Something you can access from the phone. I can't find anything.

Still no mention of expanding the Zune music service to new countries. Sigh.
They didn't mention Zune at all, which is my biggest disappointment. Next stop is E3.

Developers will get mango in a month, according to WinRumors.
The software giant will allow Windows Phone developers to load the Mango operating system onto retail devices in around a months time. Speaking informally at a Windows Phone Mango VIP event in London on Tuesday, Achim Berg, Microsoft’s corporate vice president of Windows Phone marketing told WinRumors that the company would release the bits in around four weeks time. Microsoft’s Brandon Watson previously revealed, at MIX 2011, that Microsoft was working to allow developers to use Mango on Windows Phone hardware.
That would be great.

It's not perfect yet, but it looks much, much better than the 12 points that the current IE mobile on WP7 scores.

Picked up the Focus with an 8gig microSD. Love it so far. I need to explore the app store now.
Congrats! I hope you'll enjoy it even without mango. :)

the only tests IE9 fails on acid 3 are svg related and obsolete

Finally caught the press conference stream and seeing it demoed, as is the case with most impressions of WP7, was far more illuminating than reading a feature list. The amount of baked in functionality and connectedness going on is fairly impressive.

They mentioned at the end of the presser that they only had time to show off a certain amount of features, and said they'd focus on further features in the coming weeks, specifically mentioning music as one of them. So its a phased information trickle, just like the updates. Better get used to the behavior. I don't know about you guys but I'm coining it: MS trickle.

The fact that the rest of the world still doesn't have access to, in my opinion one of the greatest aspects of the platform, the Zune Pass, is a crying shame. Smart DJ + on demand access to 12 million tracks is full of awesome. Can't come soon enough.

Same as IE9 on the desktop I think.

Edit: Damn, just realized they really are going with that URL bar only UI for IE9. 3, 4, and 5 are important damn it! Should not take two steps to access those.

I agree, but you also have to take a look at the features that don't require an absurd amount of work to be implemented. It took Google many years to get to where they are now (Maps, etc.) and I don't expect Microsoft to work faster than Google, I really don't. I do, however, expect them to come out and tell me that they actually are working on it. What's their reason for Podcasts not being up here yet? What's their reason for YouTube not working if you don't change your phone so Youtube thinks you're in the US? We don't see any improvements anywhere and that worries me. Microsoft saying that the Podcast feature in Mango will only be available in the US shows me that they don't even think they'll have them this year. It's unsettling.
YouTube always worked and still works just fine. Do you mean the video thumbnails for non-US regions? They fixed that with NoDo They didn't. And I have still no idea about the podcast situation and nobody asks them. But lets go back to Bing, because I have good news for you, my friend. It looks like you have full access to Bing Audio, Vision, Speech and German Turn-by-Turn navigation including spoken directions in German.

Consider yourself lucky. I know the build in the emulator doesn't represent the RTM (it's very buggy), but Germany is one of the few countries where Bing isn't limited to Bing Search and Bing Vision. So yeah, they're working on it.

Nokia's Executive VP of Smart Devices, Jo Harlow, has told Forbes that the forthcoming "small portfolio" of phones -- which are currently on target for a 2011 release --won't look like the renderings we've seen before. Not only that, we may see a CDMA Nokia handset at some point, as the company is "working in that direction."

sigh

just great...

hmm can't say i'm a fan of them moving the music controls. trying it out on my focus, it's definitely a stretch with my right thumb. also seems like your palm would block the track bar (?) if you've got big hands.

I actually appreciate having more screen real estate for the web page on mobile browsers, but they can make the url bar dynamically expand so that you can fit the other buttons without an extra click. But its not a huge deal either way. Its already a smoother browser than safari, now it will have even more functionality. If it ran flash, it would be just about perfect.

Disagree, the playback controls are now closer to where you thumb is oriented when holding the device. It's more of a stretch to reach down the bottom, as your thumb is nearest to the top corner of the phone.

Also a few tidbits I picked up reading new reports today:

There's apparently going to be a Web based Marketplace to install and find apps.
You can control music via voice control.
Skype app will be available this fall.

Or one can just make the URL bar non static so that it goes away once you scroll down a bit.

I started off really liking my HD7, but it's been bothering me lately.

1. Apps. Browsing the Marketplace is kind of a hassle and that's ignoring the fact that it's difficult to know what awesome apps are out there to download. As it stands, I haven't downloaded anything cool in a while. Recommendations anyone?

2. Email. As much as I like the email client, syncing with gmail is strange. Deleting emails just archives them (which is gmail's fault really, but other phones do this properly) and reading emails and having it sync back is kind of annoying. If I read or delete (read: archive) an email, I have to make sure to manually press the sync button to propagate the changes. Otherwise, there's no consistency between checking my mail on the phone and then checking my desktop a while after.

3. Notifications. This is where things are actually really great. I love notifications and I think they're implemented super well. The only thing that bothers me is a bug in email notifications, specifically. If I turn on a sound notification to play when I get new email, the phone will stutter and garble the sound, which is really irritating. I tried this on two different phones and it's the same problem. Hoped it would have gotten fixed in the last update, but not at all. I've resorted to just turning it off, which is fine, but I'd like to have a non-buggy notification.

Aside from all this, I'm happy with the general experience. Lots of niggling annoyances that hamper the overall platform, however.

Google has the best solution to maximize real estate, but they have the luxury of a menu button. I actually would not like to have to scroll up to gain access to the url bar, so they'd have to do an apple thing where you click the to bar to jump to the top, but considering they use that area differently, that's not going to happen, so a dynamic url bar is better.

Wtf is the blackberry browser doing up there? Kind of bullshit test is this?

Edit: how do the other browsers do on the acid test one?

Are you sure about that? I'm in Canada and I still don't get the thumbnails on YouTube links. Not that it matters really, I would use one of the external YouTube players anyways (SuperTube or LazyTube).

Does anyone here have an HTC 7 Pro/HTC Arrive ? Im thinking of buying an unlocked one to use up here in Canada. Any impressions?

I've got it. Not a bad phone. Feels a bit thinner than the Touch Pro 2. Not a big fan of the automatic flip up when you slide the keyboard open though. The downsides are no 3G and coming from the excellent speakerphone of the Touch Pro 2, this one's a bit of a let down (but I'm sure it compares favorably to other similar devices on the market).

I like the change to the browser, I think it's better to have favorite menu hidden and pull up as needed. The pages button is replace by holding the back button so that is all good.

The report is no tethering for Mango. I know many people want it but I don't really care as I don't want to pay anymore for data plan than I have to.

I am wondering what kind of Windows Phone we will be getting from Fujitsu. Will we get something similar to this beast - dual-boot phone that can boot into Windows 7 and can be hook up to TV set.

May 25 (Reuters) - ZTE Corp , China's No.2 network equipment maker, plans to launch smartphones based on Microsoft Corp's Mango operating system in Europe in the third quarter of this year, executives said.

"We are already working on a smartphone based on Mango and it will be launched in Europe," Jeffrey Fan, a vice-president from ZTE's terminal devices unit, told Reuters during a company event on Wednesday.

They have quite a bit of catching up to from that chart.

Yeah android 3.1 gets 221 to 255 depending on the user agent used. Anyway MS has a bunch to prove to me with the handling of this mango roll out, but if things go semi smoothly its going to be very tempting.

W7 update looks nice. It's nice that Microsoft have been using webOS devices. I'm awaiting Apple to rip off the OS at WWDC next week.
