In case you all were curious Beards & Beaks is worth 3 dollars but you have to like strategy games and micro transactions.

You get 4 levels for free the fifth and sixth are greyed out and cost 80 MS points each (so micros can use MS points but NOT the marketplace?).

I'm a big fan of the gameplay but I like strategy games, there are a couple different modes that are strategy variants of popular stuff (multi-flag CTF, tower defense and MOBA) all of which boil down to very simple flicking mechanics.

What does anyone else think who's tried the game?

You have to buy levels on top of paying for the game?

However, one issue I do have with the Zune player, and it is a seriously minor issue, is an issue I only just discovered today. I finally got around to playing a couple of continuous mix CDs that I own, and discovered that the player apparently is not capable of gapless playback. These were legally sanctioned mixes to, from official labels.

There is gapless playback on the desktop client right? Or do you mean the phone? On the phone, I don't think there is.

They did have gapless on the Zune player eventually. Not sure about the desktop client. But I'd imagine gapless is coming.

Today my LG Optimus 7 arrived in the mail.

I'm still trying to figure out how to best set it up.

- language
for the time being I've set it to English US, because I'm not sure what the implications of the language settings are. e.g. the German version of the bing website is not as good as the US version. So English might be preferable. But then again I don't quite know what the means for features like voice input/output.

- email
right now I'm using hotmail only. I've used the hotmail website to aggregate emails from my different email accounts and place the mails into different folders. This may have been a bad idea if you have to manually switch folders to check your mail.

maybe it would have been better if I had set up hotmail so that it puts emails from all accounts into the regular inbox (but then I don't know if it would still be visible where the emails came from...)

or maybe I should remove the aggregated accounts from hotmail and add them as regular POP/IMAP accounts on the phone...

also I'm not sure how those things change with Mango. With more features like language input/output, maybe I should set it to German.
and with this linked inbox thing, maybe pop/imap is best... I don't know.

any tips?

You can...

The game comes with two areas with 10(ish) levels each and you can download a 3rd for free (not sure if it's a limited time thing or not) and the fourth is available for 80 Allards (fifth to follow?).

It's definitely a weird setup but the levels are neat so far and I've only finished the first area. I like the different unit strengths and the different goals in levels.

Is the WP7 marketplace working fine today for you guys? I can download demos and free applications but I am getting errors when trying to get paid apps. Earlier today I got an error code which time I tried to buy them on the phone, now there is a message that comes when you click the buy button that says not available now, please try again later (or something like that). Using Zune on PC gives me an "unknown error".

yea... something's up with it for sure

you mean you cannot access it too? Who else is getting this problem. It seems to be a problem with the billing of my Credit Card (some check that is not working properly). Could it be because of the move of GfWL marketplace to xbox.com? It just moved.

I am referring to the phone. Not sure about the client, and as the phone is my first "Zune", I'm not sure if the dedicated player had it or not.

Not only that, but it seems that you may need to buy mushrooms packs:

Search is not working correctly and downloading updates is not working for me... (it keeps dling the old file again) have not tried to buy new so not sure about CC

I'm not feeling the micro-transaction crap. If I pay for a game (and pay a premium in the case of Xbox games on WP7) I want a complete experience. Otherwise sell it cheap and do the dlc thing.

Anyone else having issues with Sky Drive/Office sync with mango? I noticed my one notes aren't synching at all between web/phone. :(

I think that is why the game is $2.99 (cheaper than most xbox games on wp7)

Instead of launching at US$ 5 as Fable Golf, they opted for the $ 3 route but adding 2 levels as $1 DLC. I would prefer a US$ 5 game.

I think its very much a test to see if the game makes more $ this way or charging the full $5 for the game upfront..... I could very easily see more people "impulse buying" it since its cheaper.

working fine for me but I noticed my default save point got reset to phone from a synced notebook (WEB).

from your phone go into office/notes/select notebook icon, select the Skydrive location you are using online, long hold a pop up menu on the folder you want your phone notes to sync to and "set as default".

otherwise it may be saving to the on Phone location unified book.

Can I ask why? Aside from some sort of slippery slope argument, or just a general hatred of any form of DLC, I can't see a possible downside to starting out cheaper and adding on as you see fit.

I don't see DLC as an inherently good or bad thing, paid or otherwise. It all depends on how it's used. If I end up really liking this game I'd love for Microsoft to have some incentive to produce more levels.

agreed. a nice game length at a cheaper price is fine by me... that way only if I really liked it and want to continue will I buy the DLC and extend the life of the game... as would others. The casual, "heh that was fun" crowd saves some dough that way

So I upgraded to Mango and that all went smoothly.
Now when I run Zune it tells me there is an update and when I try to install it I get:

Any ideas?

I do not see any problem (actually I support it) if the DLC is release later after the game is release. It helps the game stays active for more time. But to strip the game into different pieces at the time of the launch seems a little cheap to me. Like trying to foul the costumer. There is no indication on the game page that you are paying $3 for just the two first levels (actually first three, since the third is free) and that there is more 2 paid additional levels. You may feel cheated paying US$ 3 for half the game.

There is a bad taste of XBLA Lumines in this practice.

i think the unified marketplace for pc, xbox, and windows phone is really going to help mobile a whole lot. people will see how incredible the zune marketplace is and get to see all the amazing apps available for mobile.

Just curious, what do mushrooms do?
Mushrooms are your mana to cast fairly powerful "spells", summoning a meteor, manipulating the gems on the screen and so on. They use a couple mushrooms but like I said they recharge over the course of the day.

A Google+ app for WP7 is coming soon

Google+ can not afford to shaft anyone, they need as many people as they can get.

Ok, that's not bad. I was thinking you might have needed to have mushrooms to take certain actions like lots of Facebook games do. Basically limiting what functions of the game you can do, over a period of time, unless you pay.

They are only doing it because they need G+ on everything for people to care or it'll die like all of Google's other social tries. It's no coincidence they are working on G+, and you don't hear them talking about Maps, Gtalk, Gmusic etc...

I want Google Reader, YouTube by Google, and....I think that's it. Email works like I need it to, so I don't need a dedicated Gmail app. Maps doesn't work where I live anyway, so don't care for that. I'd love to get more support from them besides G+ though.

The (unofficial) BBC World app for mango looks fantastic.

Also, Microsoft expects to sell 100 million(!) Windows Phones(!!) per year(!!!).

Microsoft’s COO Kevin Turner just announced during his WPC 2011 keynote that the company’s hopes to sell up to 100 Million Windows Phone devices per year thanks to the collaboration with Nokia:

We have dreams and aspirations that we can get to 100 million units per year with that single deal.

Aren't all those things that Google would have to sign into contracts with Google to provide?

Maybe they don't feel like moneyhatting Microsoft?

Did Dell ever update their firmware for the Venue Pro. I am thinking about getting one for my wife but all the horror story about that phone just keeping me away.
It's an amazing phone in form and function.

However, Dell's support completely blows. Be-fucking-ware. Dell just isn't a good support company period. Their niche product wont even get decent support by Dell's standard.

@wpcentral: Sorry folks, Google+ article pulled. Evidently that's an unofficial blog and just a rumor. #wp7 #google #windowsphone

So much for replacing all the BlackBerrys in the company with VenuePros, eh? :lol

The PC maker will give its BlackBerry-carrying employees new Venue Pro smartphones in return for their existing phones. The transition is expected to save the company around 25 percent in mobile communications costs, mostly by getting rid of its BlackBerry servers, Dell's chief financial officer Brian Gladden told The Wall Street Journal.

And now Microsoft doesn't even mention them as OEM anymore. Pretty weak.

I am trying to do some research on WP7. I've seen a bunch of articles stating that Flash is coming to WP7 but none that said it has. Has it? I couldn't find an expected date either.

Also there is no way to publish Flash Apps currently correct?

Windows Phone 7 doesn't have Flash and it won't get Flash. Both, Microsoft and Adobe, announced it before the release, but at some point, Microsoft went Apple and shot it down. They're going the HTML5 route now and won't allow any plug-ins for IE Mobile, not even their own Silverlight. HTML5 all the way.

And the users wept bitter tears...

having google maps on wp7 would push microsoft to improve bing maps. sad that we get no street view and the search on bing maps just plain sucks in comparison.

I'll be in Orlando next month and I'll finally get to try out the Bing Scout feature. Let's see if Bing Mango is as good as I think it can be when you're in an unfamiliar place.
