Windows Phone 7 |OT|

There isn't as much money to be made and the development platform doesn't allow game developers to reuse code. We'll start to get more attention from game developers as the Windows Phone userbase grows. Right now, the time it takes to port a game to WP is probably not worth the potential return.

Also, I don't think xbox live on WP will completely catch up to ios, but I at least thought they would try to bring the really good title from iphone to xbox live. I mean they still don't have the other two angry birds games.

Xbox should be a selling point on windows phone, but right now it just seems like an after thought.

The smartest thing they can do is start to integrate it into ALL their big name xbox games via those companion apps.... see the new halo waypoint atlas update coming that will do this kind of thing for the first time.

If there are similar companion apps for age of empires (they have one but it sucks because it has no integration with the actual game), gears, halo, forza, fable, kinect sports, kinect star wars, etc it would not be an afterthought like it is now. I do expect this to be more of a windows 8/wp8 feature though (because that userbase will vastly dwarf everybody else by quite a bit). Going after ios gaming is not the right model when you have the xbox imo.

IMO, Microsoft needs to convince XBLA devs to port their games to Windows Phone. Limbo, Castle Crashers, etc. Not to mention the vast library of Xbox Live Indie Games. The framework is the same, too, which is an added advantage.

It is, but outside of 30 or so independent games there really isn't anything there.

If it is your main portable device for gaming and you play a lot of portable game I can see people being disappointed. I don't play a lot of games on my phone so there are currently more than enough games for me.

I wonder why this hasn't happened yet.

Microsoft still isn't playing to its strengths for WP7.

I don't think XBLA uses XNA, its the Indie Games that use XNA. XNA didn't come around until later, maybe some of the newer ones do though.

Edit: Or maybe that's what you said :P

That Sabre shot looks fake to me. It reminds me too much of the Nokia 603

I think you are correct that only indie games use xna.... that is the primary reason I think we are not seeing xbla ports coming to wp7. I have a feeling all the platforms go under the same dev platform (next xbox, wp8, windows 8) and we will see games being on all platforms then. I've always seen that as the big inflection point when they finally bring everything together.

I think it would be a bigger deal to do more Xbox 360 integration.

Stuff like the remote control for the 360 and the Halo thing where you can view a map of the game/team locations while you play are much more marketable than individual games. Could you imagine if they release something similar for Modern Warfare 3?

Every mobile OS has games. No mobile OS directly interfaces into a popular home console.

Of course the catalog needs expanding, but Windows Phone needs to distinguish itself and not simply say, "I can do that, too!"

Yeah, I agree. I am really surprised they haven't pushed xbox live on WP more. Luckily, my contract isn't up until Dec 2012, after WP8 is released, so I can determine the direction that the platform is heading in and if I need to move to a different platform.

I'd usually agree with you, but in this case it would make even more sense. Nokia is already reusing the N9 design for the Nokia 800, so why not do the same for the cheaper models?

Yeah that crossed my mind. Could be plausible. I think it'll be a 'low-end' device.

Okay, now I totally get the complains about the lack of MS Points as a payment option in the marketplace. Just got 4800 points from that T-Mobile Germany promo and now I can do shit with them. :lol

Well, they don't want you buying the entire Marketplace in one swoop.

You don't own an Xbox?

any way to get Bing rewards on our phones?
the hell are bing rewards?

also i really hope MS puts the whole os together by appollo prt 2. you really need to be able to use points on your phone, and i really want to see skype.

If i disable the Sync with Xbox-Live on my Phone under Settings->Applications->Games, will my achievements still be remembered and updated next time i turn it on again?

How does WP7 handle google mail/calendar/contacts sync?
Currently have all my contacts on Google synced to the iPhone and am hoping it will be as easy on WP7.

Does unified inbox work with all kinds of mail accounts?
Have Google IMAP as well as a work Exchange account.

Also is there an official google authenticator for WP7?
Like my 2-step authentication.

And finally, is EU getting the better Samsung mango phone or just the W?

Does Live Messenger on WP7 Mango stay on even if you sign in on a computer? Basically can I be in another room with my phone and continue a conversation I was having on my computer?

WP7 handles google contacts, mail and calendar fine.

You can link all inboxes, some inboxes or no inboxes.. haven't found any restrictions between types..

Conversation view for e-mails is a per-inbox setting as well, which is a nice option.

I'm not familiar with the google authenticator.. there's not an official anything from google on WP7 to my knowledge..

as for the EU getting a phone other than the Omnia W.. there's nothing announced.. but it doesn't mean it won't happen.

Thanks, that sounds reassuring.

Growing tired of iOS where I have to close/browse/open a new app for everything I need to do.
WP7 seems like a more fluid UI in the way information and tasks are grouped together, giving me faster access to relevant information.
Also I want real tabbed browsing, not the pseudo kind that mobile safari has.

Now to see what Nokia World will bring to the EU.

You sign up on Bing, and when you search with bing you earn points which can be redeems for stuff or Microsoft points. (I just got 400 points, which I shamelessly forcing my poor children to use Bing to search when they are doing homework).

And no it doesn't work on Windows Phone. (Work fine on my iPad, how ironic).

The fuck?

So yesterday I had to charge my focus.

I didn't feel like finding the wall outlet, so I plugged it into my iMac for a charge and left it there.

I went to go grab it today, and the phone was off.

I figured the computer didn't stay on, and the phone died, so I plugged the phone into a wall outlet.

I come back to the computer, and a message popped up saying the iMac disabled the USB device.

I go back to my Focus and it's NOT turning on. I tried removing the battery, leaving it plugged in for 30 minutes nothing. It's bricked.

WHAT THE FUCK?

Love at first sight -- this is possibly the most beautiful phone ever made. It's not our first hardware love affair (we're looking at you, iPhone 4S), nor likely our last, but the N9 is in a class of its own in terms of design. You've never seen anything like it, and if you think it's attractive in pictures, wait until you see it in person -- it's completely and utterly irresistible. It manages to be elegant by virtue of its minimalism yet remains unmistakably Nokia.

That's some praise.

It does.... I left my messenger signed in on pc and it was able to talk on the phone (for a bit I was even signed in on xbox/pc and phone and they all were able to sign in)

So Zune doesn't detect it?

I use the Windows Phone connector for Mac, and no, it doesn't.

I got this in a trade through Craigslist, so I don't even know what I can do if it's bricked.

Maybe it just needs a REALLY long charge.

Awesome review of the hardware. Makes me super happy, though I thought the screen was 3.7, same as the Iphone. The review says it's 3.9. Is there some dead space not being used?

I hate how engadget kinda takes jabs at Mango and goes nuts over Meego. Meego is the same, bubbly icons everywhere, crap as android and IOS. At least Mango stands out from the crowd. But on a positive note, this review has me sooooooo hyped for my first Windows Phone it's not even funny. I've held onto my broken screen, piece of shit, Palm Centro for 7 months until my current contract ends so I can jump ship to whatever carrier carries this phone. Please please don't make me wait until next year for this Microsoft. My contract is up in 2 weeks.

Having "bubbly icons" isn't the only thing about an OS. It's unfortunate that Nokia is not letting Meego grow into it's own platform. This decreases the amount of competition in the marketplace.
