Some questions:

- Can you preview attachments in Mail without downloading? If so, what types of files does it support? (PDF, doc(x), ppt(x), xls(x))
- Can you save pictures from IE to your phone? How does one send that picture to twitter, facebook, or IM?
- Can you download files from IE?
- Can you search texts or emails?

- Just emailed myself a pptx document, you can view it by clicking it in the email and do a save as while you're viewing it. From that point it shows up in the office hub
- Yes, long press on the picture and hit save, it will end up in the Pictures Hub -> Saved Pictures. From there, any app that uses the standard photo chooser task to select pictures should have access to it.
- Don't think so, there's no direct access to the file system so how would you get to them? I'd expect you can with office documents since it works in email, but I haven't tried
- Yes for emails, no for texts.

My focus is arriving today! However I am going to New York so sadface. I bought the superthin case for it because it was half price - any impressions?

And anyone been through setup outside of a store?

Setup is easy. Just put in the battery and SIM, and then turn it on. It'll ask you for your live info and agree to terms. Simple if you ask me!

Actually that reminds me ... has anyone done a re-up for service using Amazon Wireless?

Do you need to actually stop into the carrier's store to set things up once the phone ships? Let me put it this way ... can you do that? I have some discounts and other details that need settling.

If you hand Zune the RSS feed, it'll handle updates automatically. It'll treat it like any other podcast.

Got an HTC Surround a week ago.

It's been a huge adjustment from the iPhone, but I like the phone a lot.

Anyone have any battery saving tips? Some things I've done...

- Lock screen happens after 1 minute
- Turned off Bluetooth
- Turned off WiFi
- Turned off voice controls (I wonder if this did anything...)
- Turned off email pushing

I tried using low brightness settings, but I couldn't see anything in the sun. I also tried turning off locations, but that makes using Foursquare annoying.

I did encounter my first error. Something weird happened to the sound and the device reset abruptly. No clue what caused it and everything has worked fine since it happened. Just thought I'd put it out there to see if anyone else has had a weird problem like that.

A few pages ago, I detailed an issue I had where the sounds could jitter at the end of songs I was listening to, then they wouldn't automatically progress to the next song, and then I tried to turn it off and it froze at the Goodbye! screen. Hasn't happened since, but it was bothersome. Using a Focus, btw.

You can probably fetch around $200 on Craigslist depending on the model. I was gonna do that, but my girlfriend wanted it :-\
I'm in the same boat. When I thought I was going to sell my 3G for $150 - $200, made upgrading to the Focus a much easier decision. Still very glad I did it! :D

I wonder if this is going to be our Messenger? Seems like its geared towards Enterprise, but they say it supports Windows Live Messenger users. They announced its coming to Windows Phone next year.

Microsoft yesterday announced its next generation communication platform formerly known as Office Communication Server now called Lync. It has integration of unified communications across e-mail, voice, instant messaging, audio, videoconference tasks and even desktop sharing. Lync also allows you to use start a high-definition voice and video conversation with any Windows Live Messenger user around the world and It even has integration with Microsoft Kinect.

Back from my trip, I decided to hit up the local AT&T and actually take a look at the phone I've ordered sight-unseen. Figured while I'm there I'll get some info on how Amazon orders work.

So ...

First off, LOVE the Focus overall. I generally prefer a rectangular aesthetic, and feel it would especially match this OS better, but it's still a sharp looking phone. Insanely thin and light, yet doesn't feel particularly cheap. Screen is insane (obviously).

Now for the good stuff. I inquire about how grandfathered plans work when ordering via Amazon. They note that when they make an order in the store, if someone is eligible for an older plan it simply shows up on the screen. If you aren't eligible, it doesn't show up and there is simply no way to BS one in there. I tell them that 'I went through the motions at Amazon', and there wasn't an option for my plan. They are under the impression that Amazon doesn't have access to that info, and if you go with a standard plan no one will be able to override it from their end afterwards.

This all makes sense to me, though I'm certainly a bit bummed since I have a nice plan right now. I'm not sure it's worth $150 however ... maybe. Anyway, a manager comes over and we bring him up to speed with the discussion. He fills in a few details, but everything seems in alignment. Out of curiosity he inquires why I want to go with Amazon? I mention the $50 deal. He asks if I can wait a day to see whether he can give that price to me 0_0

I'm thinking wut! So long story short, they're gonna call me tomorrow before noon with the price they can offer me. All I can say is I'm glad the phone is delayed from Amazon ... I may be cancelling!!!

My plan is actually a grandfathered PDA data plan :lol Old as hell. However, it's $39 for unlimited data and 1500 messages. Figure it's probably worth it. $5 cheaper than what the same plan would be for iPhone users grandfathered into unlimited.

Just posted this in the apps thread, but Thurrott seems to be high on this site for app browsing...says its better than the Marketplace and the Bing visual search: http://www.marketplacebrowser.com/

Windowsphonesecrets.com has had a few cool tips I didn't know about...well, I knew about the virtual keyboard, but I didn't know you could do a long press to get different symbols or web site extensions:

keyboard_shortcut2_thumb.jpg

And swiping to remove notifications!

And, Windows Phone Development for Absolute Beginners. Really happy that MS is taking a lot of initiative on the development end.

I'm as giddy as a school girl.

Tomorrow will revolve around me sitting next to my phone swooning over that cute guy that said he'd call. :lol

The one long press I want is for a ' to come up for contractions and 's stuff. I knew about holding down say . and getting things like ? and -, but I want a long press for '.

I usually just highlight the word that needs a contraction and click the alternate spelling.

Like if I type "its", tap "its" and select the right one from the autosuggest...which is awesome. I'm also glad it doesn't autoreplace "shit" with "shut"...
fuck you, Apple, I'm not 14

almost 2500 apps. I wonder if it can get up to 5000 by the end of the year.

And oddly enough, even this list doesn't have the best relevant search results. Took me forever to find Twitter and Facebook and still can't find AP Mobile, but I have no problem finding smaller, lesser known apps.

Regardless, the dev push that MS made is paying off, so far. I'm considering playing around with making an App myself...

Damn, that is pretty awesome. Might have to check it: http://channel9.msdn.com/Series/Windows-Phone-7-Development-for-Absolute-Beginners

This is my problem with iOS as well. There’s no file system, but you can still save pictures into Photos. There needs to be a “Documents” app/hub to save files from the browser. (or WP7 needs to save them to Office)

I wish they'd include a landscape view option for applications in the Zune marketplace.

It sucks turning my head to get an idea how some things will look.

My brother came by the house to show off his Samsung Focus and Wow. Just wow. Holy shit what an amazing phone. Went ahead and ordered it off amazon right away after playing with it for a bit. $50 for that thing is a steal. Cannot wait for it to arrive.

Gonna be my first cell phone too :D

Okay...

I spent nearly 30 minutes (not enough time...) with the Samsung Focus.

I'm completely stunned and amazed how fluid the phone is. The keyboard (imo) is better than the iPhone's virtual keyboard. I'm not sure how Microsoft did this, but I can type faster and more accurate on the Samsung then I could on my iPhone. For kicks, I went to the Galaxy S and played with the keyboard and I almost threw the phone because it was so crappy at key recognition. (a point in which Google has to address.)

Honestly I think after seeing and using the Metro UI in action, I'm done with iPhone and I'm done with Android. Microsoft has done something that I didn't think they could do and that is make a phone that is really good at presenting the relevant information in a way that is not only intuitive but really functional and fun to see.

At this point, I'm just going to wait for the marketplace to mature a bit more and possibly a newer CPU in the Focus but I am completely stunned by how beautiful the hardware is (that SAMOLED screen is godly!) and the features are exactly what I want out of a phone.

Amazing job MS, can't wait to see the updates come! :D

Some threads with people that have it.

General consensus seems to be that the bulk of keyboard isn't worth it ... camera is terrible ... screen not as impressive as expected ... buggy.

I'm glad to read I made the right choice, though it's still disappointing to hear the Dell is such a shit box.
I havent heard any of that.

A funny anecdote ...

While I was chatting up the chick at my AT&T store she inquired upon what phone I currently had. I told her, giving her an inquisitive look. She mentioned how she's witnessed several iPhone users test out WP7 ... and a majority of them were blown away :D. She agreed too - she wants to replace her iPhone.

I think word-of-mouth and in-store demos are going to set this thing on fire.

Neither did I until I found that forum. It includes owners of the phone. Are they all lying? At least one poster in this thread has also tried it out and thought it was hot garbage.

Yup--- same at the AT&T store I went to today. I asked the guy how the reception for the phone has been and he said they had sold quite a bit in just being out in the market for a week... week and half now.

I asked him... any iPhone users switching and he said he had sold 15/25 Focus' to iPhone users. That's not to shabby for an adoption rate for a brand new product from Microsoft of all people.

Oh my $50 is a steal and would def. make me make the switch from iPhone... only thing is I wonder if I can get it through Amazon, but keep my unlimited data plan. I don't want to downgrade if I can help it.

Read up a few posts http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showpost.php?p=24460311&postcount=1714

It's worth a shot. I'll post tomorrow whether I get the deal or not.

Count me in that demographic. Earlier today I picked up my 3GS for the first time this week and it just felt...plain I guess? I dunno. I was at the forefront of the iPhone fan club for 3 years and in a week became rather disenchanted with it. Zune Pass probably has something to do with that, as well as a little of the 'new toy' factor, but it really feels like a breath of fresh air to me.

I'll say one thing, I'm really glad MS waited until now to release. Otherwise they wouldn't have Snapdragon as the minimum spec, and therefore wouldn't have a GPU accelerated UI ... at least not at this level. Pure Sex

Edit, damn ... iPhone users dropping like flies :D

When Gary Whitta not only acknowledges it as being good, but actually admits to coveting it a bit ... you know MS is onto something :lol

:lol Am I the the only person here coming from webOS to WP7 (although I did have an iPhone4 earlier this summer)? I finally gave in and ordered the Samsung Focus on ebay. Over $500 :/ but I'll get my phone before all you $50 Amazon deal snatchers :P

I'm coming from an ancient WinMo phone (HTC Tilt).

I'll say this though ... if my deal comes through, I'll have the phone tomorrow at lunchtime ...
all while keeping my unlimited w/1500 texts plan that probably no one has anymore :)

Here is the case I got for the Focus. (The Incipio Feather)

I am not sure how I like the black color ... it's the same material on the iPad case ( the official one) which feel nice to the hands and really give the phone a nice grip (the shiny smooth plastic is quite slippery though not quite the 1st iPhone level of slippery) but the material get smudge easy.

I am going give it a few days, might go trade it in for the metallic copper color one I saw at AT&T store...

Was just reading some stuff about Microsoft Lync... I think this could be it.

Add Contacts and Share Presence and Instant Messages Users can add contacts on Windows Live, AOL, Yahoo!, and Google Talk networks to their contact list. With the Communicator “14” client, users can share presence status information and participate in instant messaging with colleagues and customers who use public IM connections.

http://lync.microsoft.com/en-us/Product/Technologies/Pages/public-im-connectivity.aspx

If this gets built into the OS, then Microsoft WINS

Mr. Snrub said:
Didn't they confirm it for the OS next year?

They confirmed that Microsoft Lync is coming to Windows Phone in 2011, I don't know if that means as a standalone app or integrated into the OS. I'm watching the presentation right now.

I'm just happy because I didn't realize it was gonna support different IM protocols.

Is it the screen or does that photo just make it look better?

Ah blast the Focus's beautiful screen! It being exclusive to AT&T is whats keeping me from diving into windows 7. I really want to break free from AT&T and switch to T-mobile for the cheaper rate plans and faster network, but they only have the HD7! which still seems like a really nice phone but the lack of a SAMOLED is really killing it for me.
This OS really benefits from having a beautiful display so I want the best of the best..ugh

EDIT: Count me in as another iphone to Windows 7 convert! :D

If you can wait ... Samsung is planning on releasing over 50 WP7 phones in 2011 :o

Obviously that includes multiple regions, but even so I can't imagine a scenario where a provider doesn't get at least one ... and I would assume basically everything they make will be SAMOLED.

the screen really is hot sex

I'll probably force myself to wait...

It's just that waiting become sooo much more difficult when you work on the floor at T-mobile! :lol

That quote confused me. It said 15-20 smartphones in 2011, for every 50 Windows Phone 7 made, there would be 24 android, and blah blah. So I think it wasn't about models, it was about the production numbers.

Gotta admit I find it interesting to see some of you coming from ancient devices into a WP7. I can see the attraction though as I think MS has managed to prepare a compelling and easy to get into product. At this point, I think the OS is still too young for me, but I am a big power user with years of OS's under my belt. I can't see myself letting go of Android right now.

I will say I am eagerly awaiting that SP1 they've been talking about since it looks to be bringing quite a punch to the table.
