How about, instead of focusing on what iOS and Android do that WP7 doesn't, you guys start focusing on what WP7 does and iOS and Android don't.

Enjoy those features and wait for the rest to come. The operating system has been out for like two months (some of which was during the holiday season), you guys really need to get your expectations in line with reality. Software doesn't come out of thin air and you can't exactly just through a bunch of resources at it and expect it to be done quicker -_-

Amen.... even if xbox live is buggy (and I havent had any issues with it). It is vastly superior to any other gaming platform.

The camera UI also far exceeds anything on ios or android (it needs to be updated to remember your settings though, that is hugely annoying)

The facebook integration also blows away android and ios (its even better than the app because it filers out much of the crap you get on the apps), email does some things better, true office integration (sharepoint), zunepass, netflix is regarded as being the best implementation.

I am also not against the way they are doing updates as long as they do them right..... what I did not want is a ton of little updates that may not get proper testing and cause things to mess up. I would rather they take the time and be sure they do updates right (and do the UI in the right way which is something else that might get neglected if they released updates individually).

That kind of stuff is where I think many people are not appreciating wp7 for what it is (and only talking about what it doesn't have compared to others while ignoring its features and asking why they don't have them)

Think I'm going to get the Samsung Omnia 8 whenever that comes out. Assuming it uses the new chipset that is.

WP7 is playing catch up right now obviously, but I think that after this summer (mango update), the OS will really start gaining attention.

UI is balling as well as zune support. So I am focusing on those. I do wish we were getting updates faster, but I will admit I AM happy to know they are legitly working on a big IE update. I mean we heard rumors, and it was logical. We didn't KNOW though.

Everyone appreciates the features WP7s already have and no one denies that they're sometimes better than what the competition is offering. Sure, it's great, but it's just not as complete of a package as the iPhone is (I don't know about Android) and that's what Micosoft is competing with. It may be hard to compete with them, but that what Microsoft has to do and I just don't see that happening when a feature like Copy&Paste takes months to be patched in or when they don't allow developers to use features that are essential for various Apps. They should do everything to get those devs to develop for WP7 and should offer more than Apple does - not less.

Don't get me wrong, I come from an iPhone and am more than happy with my WP7. I wouldn't want an iPhone 4, but that doesn't mean that I won't point out where WP7s are having problems. It's not like I'm mad at Microsoft or pissed that they don't offer these features. They already have my money... ;-)

Kindle app and ilomilo are now on the marketplace.
ilomilo link, please? :/ Can't find it through the software.

edit: Found it. Weird that it doesn't show up when I look for it in the Marketplace. Kindle doesn't show up either.

Its a firmware update that I had to hack a bit. Can't post details until later but check out old posts on wmpoweruser.com.

Sorry mate can't find it :( If/when you have the time appreciate if you could write down the steps.

Thank you.

It just occurred to me that the 7x30 snapdragon supports hspa+, which would mean support for tmobile "4g" and the same on at&t, though at&t doesn't call it "4g".

Because the search is shitty and the marketplace is buggy mess that should be fix (and I don't see how this need a firmware update). All the main app on the phone such as Zune, People etc should be a separate module and not part of OS that can be update individually but it doesn't seems that how it is.

Anyway, seeing we are not getting first update until Feb because MS let carrier control the firmware update that's over 3 months from launch until we get bug fixes (hopefully). Browsing marketplace is terrible, and search for app give you bunch of musics ... it's silly that you need an app to search for app on the phone that have a dedicate search button. :?

According to Microsoft that's how it is. They can choose to deliver a small update over the air, unlike the Apple who can only offer their users file to download that's over 400MB+ and requires connecting the device to iTunes through USB. The quick over the air downloads was one of the advantages Microsoft was touting before the phones came out. I don't know why Miscrosoft has decided to only release updates in bunches now.

I'm sad to report that Beezz (the twitter app with push notification and a live tile) just torpedoed my Focus to hell and back. All info was deleted after Beezz froze up. Then after a soft reset all my data was gone and I couldn't access the about page to hard reset. Even the grip of death manual hard reset did nothing.

I'm hoping a sync at home will clear things up, also everytime I reset a different set of info is available. I can access my podcasts so I'm going to ignore the fact that my phone isn't working and listen to podcasts (except my battery is draining super fast).

I might stop by an ATT store tonight and grab a micro SD card since I have nothing to loose now. I'll let you all know if a 32gb Micro Center card works...

I am sorry to hear that ... I have the phone reset to factory state a few times (and still not sure what cause it but they happen when I am at work) now come to think of it, both time I have podcast! app running when the phone when to lock screen mode. All the data did come back after manual reset and everything work fine. (I do have SD card in my Focus, it's 16gb Sandisk).

Have you try removing battery ?

On another note, I left the phone running last night and fell asleep watching Widows News podcast on TWiT app and for the first time my phone was completely drain of battery ...

Use one of the marketplace apps like AppAdvisor. Far better searching - genre and subgenre, sorting by several categories, flagging, etc. Plus I've never had it crash.

Wasn't the MS Windows Phone conference today? With the wave of awesome Android phones being announced every 2 seconds, I really want to hear from MS in terms of what they have planned for the near and long term.

They're doing the keynote. CES starts tomorrow.

There is a microsoft conference today at 1pm PST as well. I'm not sure what it's about though. Arstechnica will have a liveblog of the event

MS Keynote is 9:30pm Est tonight (Sony's is at 8)

If someone made a tablet with the same HW spec why wouldn't it?

I'm not saying someone should do it, just that they could.

I assume Microsoft could say "WTF, you're using our software for something other than its intended purpose" and not sell them licenses :P

I wonder what would have happened if the Chevron team didn't sell out, not that I blame them, I'm sure the money bag was big and heavy.

Because I'm sure the license won't allow it.

The tools are out and you can get them. Jailbreak your phone if you want.

I have an extra HD7 laying around, I might just do that.

Edit:
not worth it, only two apps? or is my google-fu a bit weak?

I tried everything, ATT is sending me a new one priority mail, so I'm somewhat happy, it means I have to dust off my iPhone and use it as an ipod for potentially two days, which makes me terribly sad. Although this allows me the opportunity to justify purchasing Game Dev Story, which makes me happy.

In total:
Phone reset itself after hanging on Beezz text entry.
Upon reboot no apps will launch outside of the core stuff (phone, sms, Zune, calendar)
Soft reset didn't change anything, in fact then my music/podcasts disappeared.
Cannot access the about page in settings to do a software hard reset.
Did the vulcan death grip Samsung style to cause a machine hard reset, no dice, same state on reboot.
Called ATT customer service, "Nate" wrestled with going down the same checklist as I groaned at each step.
1 to 2 business days, receive new phone.

I'm thinking of running to Micro Center right now to get a new card for my new Focus, no sense in hard reseting again in the future. Might as well get it out of the way now.

Now that Microsoft announced the next Windows for ARM, I doubt we'll see WP7 for tablets. Ever.
I think we will, but in a different incarnation. Windows 8 will have an alternate UI based off of Metro for touch devices. Book it.

So yeah Pac-Man yeah... it's old bare bones Pac-Man and they want $5... yeah... no thanks...

I'm hyped to hear what MS says today, but I think WP7 GAF will actually get more info and the kind we want at MWC verses CES.

Wasn't Windows Phone 7 "too late" a year ago?
It's not? Just look at the reaction in this thread, when we got the info about the first update.

Huh, I guess I'm a bit too negative about all this. Things are moving too slow for me and I want some competition in the tablet market. Google already teased Honeycomb (which looks imo really 'meh') and Microsoft has nothing for 2011. It's a bit frustrating.

Hi Guys,

I did the firmware update on the Omnia 7 here's the site with all the driver, flasher tool and firmware

http://www.samfirmware.com/WEBPROTECT-i8700.htm

Mine is an Asian unlocked mobile , after flashing so far so good, the marketplace like Sir Fragula said is so much faster, the phone feels even more smoother after this update.

Would recommend for all Omnia 7 users.

fucking silverlight. Any other streams?
What's wrong with Silverlight? At least I can watch the stream on full screen and use my other monitors at the same time. Rewinding anytime you want is also great. Silverlight is awesome.

e: I see. Can't you use another browser?

trying to get by without plugins as a test experiment. but google chrome doesn't bundle silverlight like they do flash
._.

And yeah, my love for Silverlight just might last forever after the Vancouver 2010 Olympics. It afforded the greatest goddamn web coverage of any live event in history.

this a million times over. Also isn't Netflix Silverlight?

No MS won't let me use a non IE based browser on my phone. Just another example of why we need an update. I can't even watch MS' own press conference on their phone.

Haven't made up my mind as to what I'm going to do with my Extra HD 7, in one hand I want to box it up and keep it as my own insurance replacement as I opted against getting the insurance, or sell it for what will be a nice price and hold out on Gen 2. I really, really like the format, but I'm an impatient lass too, so I may just get a Droid dual core when they come out.

That's WP7 not supporting Silverlight. Doesn't make it less awesome.
