I am interested in the NES emulator shown on WPCentral, and other emulators that should come in the future, but if the best we can come up with for CES is Fable Coin Golf, the future doesn't look bright for Xbox Live on Windows Phone.
.

You obviously haven't played The Harvest, Fruit Ninja and Crackdown 2 Project Sunburst.

Is the Balmer keynote available for a rewatch? I missed the part where the nice lady demoed the Zune apps and Zune Pass and showed how it's so much better than iTunes...

nah, just need to make a gif

I played around with a Delll Windows 7 phone and was blown away by how slick it was. I think I may go with a W7 phone over Android this next time around. Does Verizon offer any good upcoming phones?

Give the Focus or its more attractive European cousin the Omnia 7 a try!

About that... The game is boring. We have ilomilo, Fruit Ninja and Crackdown: Project Sunburst. I guess we can expect some game annoucements at the E3 or GDC.

So no new hardware shown. Why would they right? The phones have only been out 2 months. At least we got confirmation that MS approved support for CDMA and the new gen Snapdragon which support HSPA+. As much as we would've liked to see new hardware, we have to remind ourselves that WP7's model is more like Apple's and less like the arms race, free for all, Android model. Updates to hardware will come but they'll come as waves probably to coincide with major software updates. First major update, Mango, so don't look for anything new until then.

I personally can't wait to see a WP7 version of the 4.5" Samsung Infuse.

Be patient. As it is WP7 is a very bare bones, "Potentially Amazing" OS that needs a lot of updates to be considered in the same league as Android or iOS, or even Windows Mobile 6.x. It's missing a lot of features we take for granted, so hold out hope that in 6 months youre going to get a feature complete phone OS experience.

I just disagree with this. It's missing few if *any* features I've ever actually needed, and has brought a lot more that I wouldn't want to be without.

So, the Verizon conference is running. What are the odds that Verizon will announce a WP7 device?

You nailed it.

In other news:

The Slacker Radio is now free in Canada, makes the experience with the WP7 app even better.
Unbeknownst to us, evidently in Canada you only had a 30-day trial and then it was pay-as-you go at $3.99 a month. Ka-razy! Now, Slacker is changing their tune (see what I did there?) and offering a free-version just like here in the U.S.. Basically every few minutes you'll have to hear an ad in between your songs (so it's like normal radio). Of course our Canadian friends still have the "Plus" option which offers unlimited song-skips, lyrics, song requests and of course, no ads.
Slacker Radio now completely free...in Canada

The unwired has a 10 minutes long hands-on video with the HTC 7 Pro. The Pro is HTC's successor to the Touch Pro 2 and features a landscape qwerty keyboard. It will be available in January at O2 Germany and the first half of 2011 at Sprint.
Go and watch the video, if you're interested in this device.

VIDEOVIEW: HTC 7 Pro Windows Phone 7 Hands-on

Got an email this morning from MS, telling me to get Messenger, Bing, and Hotmail on my phone! New apps?!?!?

No. Looks like all their instructions are for other OS's and WM 6.5 :lol

The 7 Pro does look nice. The keyboard looks nice as hell as well. The only thing I'd be worried about is the landscape support in WP7. The apps that matter have it (mail and messaging) but it'd be nice if the entire OS had support for it (home screen etc).

I hope they have a damn orientation lock in the new update as well, I can't lock the orientation in the kindle app (at least I couldn't see it). System wide locking of the orientation is sorely needed.

My busted Omnia 7 goes back to Samsung next week to be fixed for free, they've sent out a jiffy bag. They need proof of purchase though. Hopefully my PayPal receipt will do the job, I hope they honour the warranty even though I bought it on eBay. What do you reckon?

Whoa for those two people in the world who have a HD2, XDA will soon break through with a full WP7 port.

http://www.ppcgeeks.com/2011/01/06/...rity-cracked-full-hd2-port-imminent-say-what/

You heard it here folks! Our friend Da_G at xda-developers.com has found a way to "bypass" or break the Microsoft Live Activation that was holding us back from making roms for Windows Phone 7. With this all possible we can now possibly port to the HD2 and other Fast Windows Mobile devices. Now sadly I doubt the Touch Pro 2 will run it but maybe the Verizon LG Panther could, along with HD2. Mostly just HD2 ports though as it is basically the same phone as the HTC HD7.

Da_G has reportedly been able to bypass the Genuine Advantage Security protection on Microsoft's Windows Phone 7, enabling you to get live services like Xbox, Marketplace and Zune working on an HTC HD2. With the Dark Forces Team, the people behind making the HD2 run Android from NAND memory (natively) and MAGLDR - together have gotten WP7 running on an HD2. The only real challenge here was to get the cloud services that WP7 uses to "phone home to Microsoft with."

Notable, it was Da_G himself who lamentated on the heavy cloud-based security back in November, stating that:

"Nearly all the major functions on the device operate by shuttling data to and from the “cloud”, presenting different methods to the user for getting their data on to the device. However as these services interact quite a bit with Microsoft’s own servers, they have considerably beefed up the security in this area. Each device contains a “Device Provisioning Partition” or DPP that contains a unique certificate assigned to the device at the factory. Each certificate is verified locally by the device in several places, and also uploaded and verified by the “Cloud” for each transaction. Loading Windows Phone 7 on to a device that did not originally come with the platform would result in having an invalid certificate, and these services will not function properly."

Well apparently he found a way after being away since Christmas, to bypass the Device Provisioning Partition, so that when WP7 build is eventually released for HD2 it should be almost fully functional!!! The Rom will still need to be booted from RAM loader, as opposed to a direct flash..aka Windows Mobile.

Ok WP7 geeks and developers here if you have not heard this yet: Can you imagine with me for just a second: of running a WP7 device on your HD2? Let's see here that makes the HD2 the best phone right now for OS choice... Android, Windows Mobile 6.5/6.5x, WP7, MeeGo, and many others that I cannot recall right now. But still amazing work, and if true then possibly see this ROM being cooked for devices like the "old days". I just can't wait!!!

Some new info from CES.

· The first update for Windows Phone is likely not coming in January (as previously thought). Per a WP7 Product Manager, we can look for it in “30-60 days.”

· Updates to Marketplace search that permit you to only search within apps, music and games will come at the same time as the initial phone update, as well as copy/paste, and CDMA support for the upcoming Sprint and Verizon launch.

· Look for the HTC Mozart and the Samsung Omnia to be the two launch CDMA devices. It’s unclear as to whether both will be available on Sprint and Verizon, but the devices are confirmed for the respective launches.

· There are no plans to advance SkyDrive. If you want two-way sync, there are no imminent plans for that. Worse, it sounds like the team is still debating what direction things are headed, so don’t expect any updates in the near future. (More on this to follow later this week)

· As eluded to in the keynote, official Amazon and Flickr apps will be available in Q1 2011.

· Microsoft is not expanding Xbox Live achievements outside of premium Xbox developers (so no Indie devs or otherwise).

· Expect around 2 Xbox title releases per week that appear late Tuesday/early Wednesday with announcements being made just prior to availability (to keep the excitement up, balance the portfolio, and avoid last-minute delays).

· The balance of the ‘launch’ titles is almost done and then they’ll move on to other titles.

· Full House Poker is set to launch in early 2011 and allegedly is turn-by-turn based so you can play against other mobile devices. It sounds like this will not extend to 360 consoles, but your credits will be shared between the console and phone.

· Game Room will also come in early 2011, and the first 3 titles will be Asteroids, Centipede, and Shao-Lin Road.

· A significant Bing Maps update is coming but since MS is taking so long to certify software expect iOS and Android to have a better Bing Maps experience for a few months. The update is expected to include an updated client, and hopefully voice navigation. Presently, the Bing team is focusing on updating the mobile client (m.bing.com) to support all mobile platforms.

· API updates (including camera and compass access and the ability to download game add-ons within a game) will not come until the ‘Mango’ Windows Phone update in the 2nd half of 2011. This is somewhat annoying since this is a Marketplace restriction (they simply won’t approve the apps) and not a restriction of the phone software itself.
MobilityDigest: Exclusive Windows Phone 7 updates from CES 2011

Nothing really surprising (except for the CDMA Omnia), but some things are disappointing. I was hoping they'd expand the SkyDrive experience and making the compass and camera API accessible with new tools at MIX11.

losing patience. I feel like I'm going to end up with an Android soon.
I want their product but they wont give it to me!

Does the api news mean that we won't have a real IM client until the second half of 2011? I've been putting up with some bullshit as an early adopter, but fuck that, IM support better come in that first update or shortly thereafter, or I'm bailing. I am sorely missing that, more than any other missing feature.

IM+ is already in the works and the rumor is that it should be out next month.

In other news, it looks like Samsung will be announcing 4G WP7 phones at WMC, definitely a good thing.

Looks like WMC is going to be where we'll be getting a lot of WP7 instead of CES. Makes sense I guess, that's where it was first unveiled.

Go and buy an Android device, because WP7 on a CDMA network won't happen anytime soon. The devices will be ready by June 30th, which is technically still H1 2011. Bastards.

nice updates but no mention of saving camera settings? that better be a given with the first update.
I guess that's part of the various fixes that are included.

Aaron Woodman also confirmed again that Microsoft is working on a KIN Studio-like service for Windows Phone. Maybe we'll see it in 2014.

Fair do. To be honest the whole CDMA thing confuses me, being in Europe. Doesn't seem very convenient that different mobile operators have different networks that don't interoperate.

The ridiculous priced cell phone plans in America are also confusing from an outsider standpoint.

I'm on Sprint, and I guess I'll just wait it out. I'll probably grab a honeycomb tablet at this rate over a Windows tablet for the Android experience.

Hopefully by June, Windows Phone 7 will be polished enough for me to join the party. Otherwise, I'll be looking into a honeycomb phone.

You lead the charge because I will follow. I knew there were somethings as an early adopter I'd have to face, but the lack of any real IM client shit is killing me. I love everything else about the phone and OS but if I have to wait near the half of this year then I'm done as well.

but unless they are given full socket support I fear it will come off as limited at best. I mean look at that shit they pass of as a window messenger.

Has anyone had an issue where the TellMe mic just stops registering your commands? "Sorry, couldn't hear anything"

A reboot seems to fix it, but it happens fairly frequently. If it matters I'm using a Focus.

Are you using a headset?

There's been a microphone issue reported under certain circumstances and a reboot fixes it. I do not use a headset and I have never experienced that problem. I am also using a Focus.

Yeah, its been really flaky on my bluetooth when i try to make a phone call from it. i get that same error. Market has been especially buggy for me as well. Anytime i dig deep into it looking for apps, it freezes, then crashes whenever i try to open up market or zune again. A reboot fixes it every time.

I think I read that the mic on the Focus stops working right after you've listened to music through the headphone jack, something crazy like that. They need to fix it ASAP -_-

I actually haven't been using a BT headset, well at least not all the times it's acted up. It is possible the combination of that and the times I've used the 1/8" jack does account for all the instances. Hmmm.

Yeah they need to fix that. Camera settings memory too.

Plugging in a headset and unplugging it fixes the problem for me. It's similar to an issue I had when unplugging my iPhone headset.

So my friends who had Blackberries have now splintered off to different platforms and it seems like Facebook group messages have become the common choice to replace BBM. Now I really need MS to update the Facebook tile to become live and notify me when I get a message. Sad that the most Facebook integrated OS is lacking such a simple notification.

To clarify, what do you mean by a 'headset'?

i'm not surprised in microsoft's lack of interest in expanding skydrive stuff. They probably don't really want to get into the consumer storage business any more than they already are. People could put stuff on there and forget about it but microsoft would still have to keep it and have a backup of it etc... lots of expense.

Okay, I'm probably one of the few persons on this planet who owns a Windows Home Server, so this is really exciting for me! :lol

The Windows Home Server team announced an official WP7 app for the next version of Windows Home Server, codename Vail (insert joke here).

With My Server for Windows Phone 7 you'll be able to look at the alarm notifications, stream all your stored media content to your phone and upload your photos from your phone directly to your server.

Seriously, this is really awesome. I'm so glad we'll get something official from MS.

My Headset is the three band quarter inch earbuds that came with my iPhone 3G. It's getting pretty worn out and seems to cause problems in the phone when I unplug it. When it does, putting it back in the phone and taking it out seems to help resolve whatever issue.

Fingers crossed that this is a native app that can run in the background.
I don't think it's native.

CNET talked with Aaron Woodman about the first update and the performance improvements that come with it.

Despite not announcing any new phone hardware during its CES keynote speech, Microsoft paid special attention to its Windows Phone 7 platform with some live demos of existing features, as well as the promise of an update that would bring new features like copy and paste along with performance improvements.

But how much of a boost will phones be getting when firing up applications? The answer, it turns out, is hard to quantify.

"It impacts apps differently," Aaron Woodman, director of Microsoft's mobile communications business, told CNET in an interview yesterday. "It's not the same percentage of improvement, primarily because what we've done is modify how memory is loaded. So more graphic intense, front-loading applications like games are going to benefit a great deal more from the change in architecture, than a text-driven application," Woodman said.

"The example I always use is Flixster, which actually loads up really quick today," Woodman said. With the new version of the Windows Phone 7 software, which the company plans to release sometime in the next few months as a free update, Woodman explained there was, in fact, a performance improvement. But because the app grabs all its data off the Web, it's hard to tell if there's been a boost. "There is a performance improvement, but you just don't notice it," he said.
Windows Phone 7 (Credit: Microsoft)

Where some of the biggest changes can be seen are on games, Woodman explained. "All apps will get better. Some apps will get incrementally better, games will get a lot better, and some games will get exponentially better," he said.

The demo we got in the interview was Popcap's Bejeweled, currently one of the top sellers on the platform. Side by side on identical development hardware, which was slightly slower than what's in the hands of consumers at the moment, the phone with the newer software easily bested the older one. "The difference is pretty dramatic between the two, it's anywhere from 15 to 20 seconds in difference, and that's dramatic for us," said Woodman.

Most importantly though, Woodman pointed out that the change in how apps will be loaded doesn't require any changes to existing application coding. "The person who wrote Bejeweled doesn't need to do jack to get any sort of performance improvement," he said.

Microsoft remains conservative in offering up any details on a release date for this first update. Part of that is due to the company treading new ground in a multistage update process that begins with Microsoft first finalizing its phone software before aggregating software from its hardware partners. Microsoft then tests how the updates will go out to those devices, both through Microsoft's software updating process, and through the carriers.

"That last piece is unique, and new and unknown to us, because we want it to be great, and perfect and we've never done it before," Woodman said. "Update is one of those things you can't screw up. We have extremely high product satisfaction, and you can lose it in a second by hosing people's data in any incremental percentage, so it's a big deal."

Yeah, I'm definitely jealous of the LG owners. Lots of actually desirable apps there, it's a pretty cool thing they are doing. I'm sure the developers behind those apps are happy :)
