Windows Phone 7 |OT|

Google doesn't make hardware either, but they know how many phones are being activated by users.

I'm guessing they pick up that data when folks sign in with their Google accounts, right? I know MS can do the same when folks use their Live ID to sign into the Windows Phone. I don't blame them for being a little coy if the numbers aren't really high, the tech press would just write nothing but bad stories and it would be a situation like the Pre all over again, where every other story was about how they were dead or dying and didn't stand a chance against iPhone. Palm never had a real chance, so I don't care if MS uses manufacturer's shipped numbers, 1.5 million is not bomba, it is a solid, if unspectacular start, and really, which one of us that owns one of these phones hasn't had someone stare at it and ask us about it? As consumers continue to see the phones in the wild and users remain enthusiastic (which is positive news from that survey), then momentum will grow. There will have to be an "it" phone or an "it" game or some other factor to ramp sales more rapidly, but until then MS can certainly build on this. I know my wife is asking for my Focus in exchange for her Captivate. The OS is gorgeous and probably the most feature complete and innovative phone OS launch EVER.

Do you honestly believe that some apps perform rather shitty because the 1 Ghz Snapdragon is too slow?

I wouldn't really know why the apps run so slow, but there is a noticeable difference in interaction with the native maps and the maps in yelp or foursquare. The same is true for lists in a variety of apps.

Wordpress for WP7

Link has a video as well. Supposedly it launched early and was buggy on the 14th, but they heard the cries and hurriedly worked on a fix which just came out on the 19th. Good to know whoever is controlling this app actually seems to care about updates.

Also here is the developer website for the app itself!

It looks like the first Verizon apps showed up in the marketplace.
We all know the HTC 7 Trophy is set to show up on Verizon soon, the only question is when.

That day must be inching much closer, as a number of Verizon-branded apps have started showing up in Marketplace.

Amongst the ones spotted are Netflix, Slacker Radio, and My Verizon Mobile.

It now appears very likely we will see CDMA handsets in January 2011, rather than much later into the New Year.
Verizon apps start showing up in Marketplace

I wonder what the difference is between the Verizon Netflix and the normal one is. I hope carriers don't start using their native code access to get better versions of standard apps -_-

I didn't know that only carrier are allow to have native code app ...

My phone did that wierd thing again where it can't seems to access data (the phone is reverse back to factory stage) or so it seems but when I reboot all the data is still there.

It only does this at my work and both time when I enter the building. I am not sure what at my work could cause my phone to go bonker. (We have a lot of electronics running though since it's a hospital).

IGN's WP7 app is out. I'm sure someone cares. :lol

And Microsoft updated the marketplace search. No, you can not hide the music results, but now it works with keywords.

I gotta admit. I hate websites having apps. I'd rather websites just create a really good mobile site they can use for everything instead.

I agree, but I just downloaded the app and it is VERY well done. Real slick, and it looks great on my phone.

I think it's the better solution now, since the IE can't play embedded videos.

I'd love an Engadget app. Even WebOS got one.

I'm happy to report that Fruit Ninja runs just fine and looks fine despite some early reports that it looked bad and ran slow.

Anyone play Pocket God yet?

I tried installing it last night on my Focus and it won't run. As soon as it boots it throws an error (0x80006000 I think) and closes. Similarly with Rocket Riot, it closes as soon as the game boots but it doesn't give me an error.

All of my other apps so far run fine on my Focus, and I haven't installed a micro SD card yet so I'm just running on the built in memory. Has anyone else had this happen on the Focus? Or any other phone for that matter?

I hope Verizon hurries up with their FiOS app ... and it better be available to everyone (I don't they're stupid enough to make that mistake).

Ok, so my friend received his Windows Phone 7 device and is pissed as hell. Turns out Microsoft enforces a very strict regional policy which ties a set language to your country where your billing address is situated in.

That's all fine and dandy for the most part, but for a country like Belgium that has three official languages, being Dutch, French and German stuff like this is kinda asking for trouble. He lives in the Dutch speaking part of the country, but can't switch the language of the app store as the default for Belgium is apparently French. He has tried making another Live account that isn't tied to his gamertag. This enables him to view the app store in English or Dutch but has the downside of not being able to download any apps, because his billing address isn't actually located in any of those countries. Apart from Flemish Belgians this is a problem Swiss people apparently experience as well, along with people working abroad.

Has there been any news of this regional policy changing in the future, as I don't imagine a firmware update will necessarily include this, or is there a way of making the app store region free? As it stands he's very disappointed with the device because of this.

edit: seems he can buy apps, and they're in english when he downloads them, it's only the descriptions that are french. Not that bad as he initially thought.

Wow, IGN app is easily the best performing app I've used. Clarity Consulting does good work.

If all apps performed like this, I wouldn't have anything to complain about :P

Another situation where an independent Flanders would save the day... :s

Has anyone managed to get SD cards working properly on the Samsung Focus? I've been following a thread over at the XDA Developers site about this, but it has devolved into a geek pissing contest.

Define working properly. My brother has a 32gb class 2 sandisk in his Focus and I have a 16gb class 2 sandisk in mine and haven't had any issues at all.

I finally got around to playing one of the two free Xbox games on my phone and got my first phone achievement. :D

It was pretty cool hearing the toast and adding to my gamerscore. I still don't like touchscreen controls, but the simpler games are fine.

I also use Class 2 sandisk 16gb and so far it works fine. (Still have 12gb left!)

FiOS application? What would that do?

https://www36.verizon.com/fiostv/web/members/Apps_Overview.aspx

Verizon currently has 3 FiOS iPhone apps:

  • Verizon FiOS On Demand - buy, rent or watch movies on your mobile phone
  • Verizon FiOS Mobile Remote - Use as a Remote Control, Flick Photos to Your TV, Personalize Favorities, Mute TV for Calls, etc.
  • Verizon FiOS DVR Manager - Browse TV listings,
record shows, and manage your scheduled and recorded programs

Somewhat related, I'd love to see all of the 'To Go' sites (HBO To Go, Max To Go, etc.) receive dedicated apps as well.

if the screen is the same as on the Vibrant, then i'm going to have to respectfully disagree and say that samsung oled screens are the best, and this is coming from an HD7 owner.

BTW, break.com app now has a live tile.

Getting the exact same thing as well. Same phone too. Even tried uninstalling it and reinstalling it and no luck.

Actually kinda pissed tbh.

Wow, the IGN app is very impressive. That is how you do a WP7 app..

My only complaint is that the videos don't play. If they fix that, it'll be perfect.

Edit:

It's only some videos that don't work. Weird.

Great app, though

Yeah, it's almost perfect. Compared to what they've released for the iOS it's a masterpiece (10/10). :D I hope that we'll soon have a standard for how apps look on the WP7.

I have read some of the reviews for the apps that say the same thing.

Anyone who has a Focus, are you able to run either of these games (Rocket Riot or Fruit Ninja)? No matter what I try, it doesn't seem like I can get either of these games to run (trial versions of each).

Fruit Ninja runs on my Focus, no slowdown, no jittering frames, no crashing, no error on start. Not sure what's causing this for so many people.
