I was going to buy a Venue Pro, however I read that it only has 256mb ram? Guess I'll wait Gen 2 of the WP7 phones and make do with my HD 7

For example - a camera facing you so that you could do video calls.
Phones have had front-facing cameras for forever and no one has ever used it. Maybe they've updated it, but last time I tried a video call from my gf's iPhone 4 it did not work, because the other person didn't own an iPhone. Companies are still trying to figure out how to use video calls. The iPhone 4 is not the device that makes it finally useable. You sure have a point here, but I just don't think every feature is worth mentioning. It's cool that my HD7 has a kickstand, but I wouldn't mention it when I compare it to an iPhone 4, because it's just something that's there, but neither very useful nor very well-engineered. Just like Facetime on the iPhone.

so sad about the venue pro. makes my decision to go with the hd7 all the more better. to think i almost drove to a microsoft store to pick up a venue pro.

My Omnia 7 is bust.

I switched out a sim card, something seemed like it got caught and now it no longer recognises sim card!

Brilliant...

I bought the phone from eBay so I'm hoping it's still covered under warranty. I've registered with Samsung and registered the phone, I've put in a service request and I'll see what happens. There's a 2 year warranty typically, hopefully they'll help. If they tell me to go through the phone provider (i.e. T-Mobile) then I'm fucked.

Merry Christmas, here's to robust £400 hardware...

Interesting. When I turned my Optimus 7 on this morning, my phone tile said "Invalid SIM". Tried few other SIMs and it's the same. Worst part: My SIM cards don't work in my Touch Diamond anymore. It seems the Optimus is killing the cards. The night before I only turned off the 'send feedback' feature and that's it.

But hey, all we have to do now is to remove the phone tile and we have a Zune HD2. Isn't that awesome? :lol

Wow, that's crazy. Is that a widespread issue on Google? Some nasty bugs our there, MS needs to put out patches much more often than waiting for a bunch and then releasing it.

All I found was a Venue Pro with the same issue. But that was the second batch and it already had this problem. My Optimus 7 worked fine for a week.

First I thought the SIM- and net lock was enabled (it's a Vodafone device), because after entering the PIN it's searching for the network, finds it and then it says 'Invalid SIM'. So I tried my Vodafone SIM, but the same thing happened.

'Searching ...'
'Vodafone'
'Invalid SIM'

About App Management: Maybe this is another thing that's currently not working for me, because I don't live in the US, but there's actually no way to manage your Apps on your computer, right? Microsoft really has to release an update for that. I want to be able to see what Apps I've downloaded, what Apps I'm currently downloading, what Apps I have on my phone and which ones I have on my hard drive but not on my phone. They should just copy what Apple did and include a Apps Tab to your Collection where you can actually manage your Apps. Does anyone know when a feature like this is coming?

I already said that most apps are too small for the download tab. If they're bigger, then you can see the download progress there.

I agree with the rest. The Zune client needs better app management.
Tip: If you want to see your download history, go to settings, account and then purchase history.

That should be easier to find.

Obviously you thought wrong. Unless it was having problems prior to the drop. You have insurance, just in case you have to return it and they deny rma replacement due to damage? Is there any visible?

No visible damage. I DO have insurance. It's so weird, because it reads the data properly for a few minutes, and then slowly apps stop working and the pictures/music disappear.

Seems to me that Media Center would be a no brainer. I don't see why it isn't easier to run my entire computer from that front end. Love my HTPC, but I hate that I can't do everything I want just from Media Center 7.

I got a new HTC HD7 today, and I absolutely love it. The only problem is that I've come across a dead pixel on it and I'm not sure what to do. Can I return it to a t-mobile store and have them exchange it for me?

So an update on my issue. I'm still at home and there is no att store nearby. I went into my accounts in the Settings and it says none of my accounts are up to date. When I click into them, it just basically refreshes the page and does nothing. So I think my major problem is that none of my accounts are connected and that's why nothing is saving. :-/

Wow I go AFK for a few days and it seems everyone's phone is taking a shit on them. I'm currently watching the Jets Bears game while listening to a couple of my favorite xmas songs from the Charlie Brown Xmas OST by Vince Guaraldi on my phone. So things are working smoothly over here.

Took some nice snow pictures earlier with my phone when the family was outside in the snow. Man it's like night and day with the focus and pictures. My pics from earlier came out great. Don't ever step fucking inside though without any natural light or else your pics go from ZOMG Awesome to ewww wtf is up with my camera. :lol

CES is almost here. I'm thinking we should make a new thread around CES since that'll also be around the time we get our 1st big phone update. Figure it would be nice to let this topic and thread ride out till the new year then switch over!

Peace and much love to all of you out there in WP7 land! :D

Thank God it was just my SIM card and not the phone or the OS.

any word on what the next WP7 hardwares are going to be?

Nope, but the OS runs fine as is on current hardware. They have no reason to upgrade the current wares until they actually get the hardware on all the carriers which hasn't been done yet.

In reality none of the current platforms not named Blackberry really have a huge need to upgrade from their current offerings except to make a big push to "4g" (whatever the carriers want to call their upgrade from 3g). Better SOC are hitting earlier next year and will be shown in force at CES which is January 5th. For non tablets though they are gonna be slight overkill as apps always have to be coded for a lower common denominator.

Outside of maybe a few new hardware vendors getting in on the digs not much else will change. Nobody is getting a resolution bump anytime soon, and we already have a range of phones out in terms of screen size. The only other big hardware feature to add currently would be a front facing camera, but that requires OS software which MS has bigger things to work on.

So to nail it down the biggest thing at least for WP7 and Android in Jan/Feb is OS updates. MS has at least one big update and a 2nd one rumored to hit for all phones in the next two months, and all the Android phones have to get updated to 2.3 aka Gingerbread. If we see any new WP7 hardware it'll just be a variation on the current specs for now while MS works on OS updates to pump out.

Honestly at this point no matter what carrier or os you want to go with I wouldn't buy a phone till you see what goes down at CES, and you learn when your personal cell phone market is gonna get "4G" for whatever carrier your on. 3g is sort of winding down and 4h is just starting up so it's kind of a wait and see time to buy a phone since most people buy on contract and you'd be locked in for 2 years.

PS: Expect Tablets to be the big thing at CES as well, and if Apple sticks with their yearly refresh time that means March for an update to the ipad.

There are a ton of different themes and colours for the tiles. They're not all like that, he just chose that tile design.

Man, the HTC 7 Pro looks really bland and the keyboard looks worse than the excellent TouchPro 2 keyboard.

It's like HTC isn't even trying with the first gen of WP7 devices. The HD7 is what the HD2 should've been (a WP7 device, but got turned into a WM 6.5 device, bc MS delayed WP7) and I can't tell the different between the Mozart and the Trophy. And now the 7 Pro, which is a heavier TouchPro 2 with a worse looking keyboard. So disappointing.

Let's not forget that HTC is now grumbling about WP7 and wanting to inject Sense on to the phones, thus breaking uniformity of the OS. I'm cool with Sense if it's an app. and nothing more just like the Hub.

My phone is still good *knock on wood*. I will be looking to add an SD card at some point, probably this week. I love being able to load up video podcasts on this thing, plus new music I download to my Zune at home.

This thing is just so smooth, man. And really mature for such a young OS, despite some of the little missing features. I went home early cause our AC wasn't working, and while I'm playing Halo Reach I get a call to forward a spreadsheet to my boss. Now, I did that before I left, but apparently our mail server is acting up. I was panicking, but I remembered I had the account on my phone, so I synced the sent folder, located the spreadsheet, opened it, and then sent it through my gmail rather than through our work email account. It was so easy, so quick, I was really impressed.

I did one photo montage on Windows Live years ago and now it shows up on my phone. Crazy, I had forgotten about it. Now I wish I had done more, it's so smooth and the pictures retained their high quality.

I don't think MS will allow that and the guy that talked about Sense on WP7 was pretty vague, iirc. I think they'll just integrate some of the new Sense features into the hub and that's it.

I really liked Sense on my Droid Incredible, but I think that was because I couldn't stand stock Android and Sense added something that was missing.

With my HD7, I can't stand the little HTC Hub so I uninstalled it. It doesn't match at all and if anything it detracts from the entire experience. Ugh.

Well you have this Quote

We have a good relationship with Microsoft so we’re continuing to work with them to figure out how to enable a Sense experience without breaking their model. Our expectation is that we will be able to do more over time.

and this one from Forbes about HTC

HTC wants to take another run at it though with its Sense interface according to Forbes.

"Sense is often described as a user-friendly software overlay, but HTC typically describes it as a user-facing experience that unifies its products, differentiates its brand and benefits HTC device owners. It sits on top of the phone’s operating system, which in this case is WP7."

HTC keep that shit out of my WP7. I understood why it was needed for Winmo 6.5, but it's not needed here.

It was also needed for Android until probably gingerbread, but yeah, they need to keep that crap outta WP7 if they want me to ever consider their phones for the platform.

The point of Sense in the first place was to hide Windows Mobile 5/6.5's ugly home interface.

Now with WP7, MS has a functional home screen, so putting Sense is counter-intuitive.

HTC is really not trying any more. They seem to have a huge ego in putting Sense on every platform.

The key thing about those quotes is they are attempting to do this without breaking Microsoft's WP7 model.

I think there is a lot they can do within the current framework that the OS probably doesn't allow at the moment. I've got next to no experience with Sense, so I'll just pick their clock as an example. Could they, with the current framework, implement that as a live tile? Doing the animated live tiles that exist for the native apps obviously relies on some sort of background processing, and it would be kind of stupid to implement that using notifications.

Wow, so it keeps getting weirder. So my phone seems to be able to neither read (consistently) nor write to memory. After every soft reset (turning on/off), no matter what I had previously done (sent texts, taken pictures, etc.), it reverts back to the state it was when this problem first started occuring.

I tried reseating the battery and SIM card. No luck. I can still do basic functions, like make calls and texts, but can't check my gmail or access any 3rd party apps.

And so, after figuring I tried everything, I attempted a hard reset. First time I tried, I couldn't get into the About menu (it just refreshed the settings page when I tapped it), so I hard reset it using the button method. It says it worked, but when I turned the phone on...tadaaaa! My previous state was back. All my apps "installed" (I used that loosely, because they were still inaccessible), like I hadn't wiped anything.

Hmm. So I go into my settings and it lets me reset it via the About menu this time. But again, after rebooting it, it acted like I hadn't done anything. No reset, no nothing.

This shit is weird.

He drop the phone. Since you have insurance I think you should just exchange it, not sure why you are going through the hoop try to fix it. Something is obviously wrong after you bounce it off the pavement.

Listen to this man.

I don't know why and it seems weird, but the IE7.5 on WP7 has a problem with Youtube video thumbnails, if you're outside the US.

bpmcyq2ie2bq3l72n.jpg

A workaround for this bug:

  1. go to your region settings
  2. change the region format to English (US)
  3. restart the phone
  4. go to IE
  5. make sure you have the mobile view activated
  6. tap on 'delete history'
and you're good to go. You'll now see the embedded videos and IE will now open the video player, instead of redirecting you to YouTube Mobile.

Yeah, it's strange. I was expecting the WP7 to be the same experience everywhere (just like Xbox Live is), but it doesn't seem to be that way. I really hope they have a fix for all the problems people outside of the US are having. Workarounds are nice, but for the regular customer the features are just not there and they rightfully complain about that.

I guess it's surprising that a short drop to gravel would cause this much damage. I dropped my iPhone 3GS a number of times and didn't have any hardware issues.

Regardless, that's what insurance is for! I wouldn't have gone through all this trouble, but I was home for the holidays with no ATT store nearby. The East Coast storm delayed my flight yesterday, so I couldn't get to an ATT store when I got home.

And then this morning I woke up early to go to the ATT store, but realized I had an early shift at work, so had to rush to work :lol The universe does not want me to get a new phone...

I miss my WP7! Excited to get it replaced today, got some MS Points for Xmas...

With smartphones people's experience can vary greatly. I dropped my iPhone 3GS once on the pavement and the screen cracked. I dropped my Samsung Focus and Pre 2 and the most I got was a scuffed case.

The WP7 marketplace has now 5,000+ apps. Pretty impressive for such a short time.

Once again, another week another milestone. Today, the Marketplace hit the big ol' 5,000 for available apps. What's funny about this number is on December 25th, WebOS also hit 5,000 official apps (unofficially, it's over 6,000). As we mentioned last time, WebOS has been out for 18+ months, whereas Windows Phone, just two.

...

Also of interest, there are over 1,100 games available, which is nearly a fifth of all apps--so gaming is huge. Tools are next at 751 and the rest of the stats can be found at WP7AppList, of course. Here's the rest of the Marketplace history, as refresher:

October 4th: Invite-only early submissions
October 25th: 1,000
November 4th: Marketplace open for all submissions
November 8th: 2,000
December 1st: 3,000
December 15th: 4,000
Windows Phone 7 Marketplace hits 5,000 apps - shows no signs of slowing

Very cool! Now it's time for them to now always highlight Need for Speed no matter where I click. Maybe this (again) is a regional thing? The Store seems to be a bit of a mess when accessing it through the phone. It's not really a great experience to just look and download random apps. :/

It's pretty bad that you can't use points for apps/games though.

And yet another such bonehead move by Microsoft WP7 team. This is probably the most annoying (to put it mildly) thing about marketplace, aside from the fact that it crash so often.

When I got an iPad earlier this year, I remember the iTune store was not so great but Apple quickly patch and make the experience better. After almost two months, and the one thing that set this phone apart from the rest ie Zune marketplace and Xbox Live are still buggy...

They keep posting those milestone ie 5000 apps in their store (I know Microsoft love them numbers game, only exception is when the numbers are shit then they don't say anything about it). A good milestone would be fixing all this annoying quirks and make the experiece better ... I am all for more quality apps but most of those apps are crap I would rather have 2000 good apps than 5000 apps that are mostly shitty stuff.

Can't WAIT for the first damned update. 2011 will be a great chance for MS to get something done with MP7 if they keep the updates coming.

Don't be so closed-minded. Some people enjoy having ten different options for currency conversion.

I did day 1, but then I got busy with RL stuff. One of my plans is to go back and start over with day 1. I'll have more time to complete that in January post holiday craziness.
