Focus also mine got to 100 percent then failed. Yeah.

With things like this makes me kind of glad I don't have the update yet cause I would just get pissed it wouldn't install right.

On the same note I hope today isn't indicative of how updates are gonna be handled for WP7. Not very pleasing IMO so far.

Looks like Sprint might have a Windows 7 phone this week. Rumors point the the Pro 7. I've had the Touch Pro 2 since launch and it's a solid phone but I was hoping for more options here. The Pro 7 just wouldn't seem like much of an upgrade.

Touch Diamond here.

Until 4G only costs $10 more on Sprint, I'm sticking with what I have.

I thought we would have to wait until mid-summer. I want one nao!

Am I crazy for thinking 4g right now isn't a big deal? 4g = bulky phone with extra battery drain... and I hardly use 3g as it is cause I just am on wifi everywhere...

IDK I like the idea in theory, but in practice it's just not on my radar...

I would have to agree; mainly because it's not like carriers can offer 4g as defined by the international telecommunications union.

It's more like 3.5G

4G is a big deal once you use a phone that really takes advantage of it. i used a t-mobile mytouch 4G, which is a HSPA+ phone with 768mb of ram, and it was blazing fast. much more faster than my hd7 which is on the same t-mobile network.

that said, i'm speaking about HSPA+. all those negatives about 4G you mentioned were probably LTE related.

Even still I'm on wifi 90% of the time anyways. I'm wifi at home, wifi at my gf's, wifi when I'm out some where, wifi at my family's homes etc... which means I'm only really not on wifi when I'm driving my car and not using my phone anyways... IDK not a big deal for me...

That's how I was able to skate by with 200mb on At&t. However as I load up on more app and find more useful stuff like stream podcast that I forgot to download and listen to it in the car, but if they want me to pay $25 for 2gb, I rather paid 30 and go back to unlimited.

Hell I'm still on 200 megs per month. Sometimes I switch to 3g just because I feel like I should use some of it since I'm paying for it. LOL

so what's the xbox live game of the week?

by the way, i'm loving that sprint is really hyping their wp7 release. once verizon gets on board i really think the platform will gain some legs going into the mango update. then we should see some HSPA+ phones and Nokias.

oh, and if apple doesn't include gpu accelerated html5 browser in the iphone5, wp7 will really have an advantage.

Rant: Sadly as much as I love gaming I already know whatever XBLA game we get will be some over priced thing that I won't buy. The platform has potential to be the best place for gaming on the mobile space... in reality it pretty much blows....

/end rant

i disagree. MS doesn't want to go down the google path where everything is free or pirated. the ecosystem has already proven that developers will make money which will bring the best developers and games to the platform. i'm completely fine with paying $3 for quality games. but yeah, i won't pay more than $3, screw the castlevania puzzles and need for speeds.

Thankfully Telus is starting the HSPA+ trend here with no extra charge so I'm hoping Bell and Rogers follow. Although all it takes is one rate increase to make the other two follow...

I don't mind the price just give us good decent game. I don't even mind if they are iOS port but so far game on Live is just not all that different from other smartphone. I wish MS would wake up and do more with Xbox Live, aside from acheivement and friend list you can't really do much due to lack of multiplayer game support....even the leaderboard is half-bake.

Only if you have an older firmware. Go to the Samsung site, get the fw update and the update should work.

Samsung website tells me, that there is no firmware update for my Omnia7. Also, the Zune software tells me the software version 7004 to be current, and no new update available.
What gives?

I have the same problem.

I manually updated my firmware. Can't remember exactly where I got it from though - think I mention it way back in this thread.

Got the update yesterday as I mentioned... now though my Xbox Live hub only shows the Collection pane. Swiping left or right returns to it, and the other features don't seem to be available. Anyone else get this?

Which people?

Twitter wp7 support responding to a guy twit about his Focus that got stuck in a loop after update. Their solution to him was go back to your carrier and exchange the phone. He already exchange it once however.

http://twitter.com/2th

I am thinking may be Samsung just make shitty phone with pretty screen and my woe during the last month was just because the phone is crap and not the SD card. Looking through some of the twit it seems the reboot problem is common with Focus with or without the SD card. I will get my exchange tomorrow and hoping that the replacment is not worst.

What's up with Samsung's 'firmware' updates for the Omnia 7 and the Focus? I thought updates would be the sole preserve of Microsoft, and it would be a simple, orderly process.

Sorry, you're right. For some reason, the firmware wasn't distributed by Samsung. Here's the news link:
A new Samsung Omnia 7 ROM has just emerged a few minutes ago for all you brave souls who wish start the new year by doing something risky. There’s apparently two versions of it which are dated November 2010: I8700XENJK1: CS,DE,EN,FR,HU,IT,PL,SL and I8700BSEJK1 : EN,ET,LT,LV,RU,UK (AZ,BG,DE,FR,KA,KK,MK,RO,SR). No word yet on what is new in there or even if it is safe to flash them. But if you are in the mood just head over here to grab the files and the tools need to flash your device. BTW, according to the same website (which has a pretty good track record) there’s a Samsung I7850 (Omnia 8 ) Windows Phone 7 in the making and based on the model number I’m guessing that it will sport a hardware keyboard.

Update: I finally flashed the I8700XENJK1 ROM on my carrier branded Samsung Omnia 7 and played a bit with it for a few hours now . The whole flashing process took only 3 minutes. There’s no need to sim-unlock your device or anything and It can be flashed on any Omnia 7 device as long as you can access the Download Mode. The good news is that the Radio stack has apparently received a big update here because all Data connections (Cellular and Wifi, didn’t test BT yet) have been improved. The Marketplace now loads super quickly (and still hasn’t crashed yet!) and all third-party applications that fetch data online are now quick to load up content. The Diagnosis tool has also been updated (there haptic feedback when tapping on the dialer in the diagnosis application).

And the site where you can download it: http://www.samfirmware.com/windowsmobile.htm
#wp7 update issue with Samsung Omnia 7 is related to the outdated Samsung firmwares (JI9, JJ4), JK1 works fine.

I know that Sir Fragula flashed the new firmware and the update worked for him, but maybe you should still wait.

I made the mistake of visiting the Microsoft social boards...looks like a lot of Samsung owners are having issues. I'm kinda glad I haven't been prompted to update my phone yet.

I wonder if this screw-up will delay no-do some more? Their test pool must not be robust enough, I wish they'd open up a beta like they do with Explorer and they did successfully with win7. Make testers sign off on the dangers etc. And have a larger pool of test phones.

Omnia 7 users or Focus as well?

So I have a G1 Android atm, I think my provider here in Australia can give me an awesome deal on an Omnia 7 though. It's either that or a Galaxy S. I have an iPod touch 4 so no iphone, plus I like good homescreens with info on them and for that iphone is a no no.

so it's basically between Omnia 7, Galaxy S or back to the drawing board. Windows mob 7 looks pretty swank. Is the omnia 7 good? I've read good reviews but I also read good reviews of the g1 and that was a pretty big let down for me.

Thanks for the clarification, mate.
I think I wait a couple more days. That Sammy is not giving the FW update on their official site seems fishy to me, but we´ll see. The update seems unimportant enough.

If you have to choose between the Omnia 7 and the Galaxy S, I think it comes down to the operating system of your choice. Both are really great phones (the Omnia 7 is imo the best WP7 on the market) and while Android is the more mature OS, I think the user experience is better on WP7. Don't you have some kind of return policy in Australia, where you can bring the phone back in 30 days? If you can, then I'd say give the Omnia 7 a try and if you don't like it, you can still pick up the Galaxy S.

Looks like Microsoft is rolling out a fix for the Samsung phones this week.
Reportedly it's a firmware issue with Samsung, more accurately those with firmware versions JI9 and JJ4 are experiencing problems, while the JK1 firmware, according to ZDnet, are doing okay. While we have no way to confirm that 100%, it seems best for those users to avoid the update. In fact, that may be easier than it looks since from our perspective (here in the States) Microsoft has either yet to or has indeed put a halt to rolling out the update (both my Quantum and HD7 have yet to be flagged for an update, even when force-checked in Zune desktop).

Microsoft is evidently set to push out a "fix" update within three days time, noting in their support forum:

We would recommend at this time, not to retry the update, as subsequent attempts will fail similarly. While we continue to investigate the issue, we would ask that you not attempt the update until your device alerts you of another update opportunity, in approximately 3 days’ time.
Microsoft offers some advice if your phone gets stuck during the update process, including disconnect the device, pull the battery and put back in to reboot. For those who have a "bricked" device i.e. it won't boot at all and cannot be hard-reset, you are advised to contact your carrier--reportedly AT&T is being cooperative in this regard and covering the phone under warranty.

LG Quantum here via ATT.. no update yet but based on how crappy my OS I would like to see if this fixes anything.. will wait patiently.

Edit: reading above post.. ugh not a good start to the WP7 update process.

Actually I'm pretty happy that their working the kinks out, or preloading an update to stop people from blocking.

If Microsoft's move was to make the carriers sign up to only have the option to block one update and then drop updates that do nothing to force the updates that matter then that's pretty awesome.

Otherwise I'm okay with this just fixing the update system so that future updates aren't a massive cluster-eff.

No Update here either. :(

Since I have to drive to work from now on (1 hour, ugh), I thought about putting some audiobooks on my WP7 device. I'm pretty sure the one audiobook I have from the iTunes store doesn't work, but I have most of them on CDs anyway. What audiobook format does WP7 use?

Using MP3 is not really an option since it doesn't let me continue listening from where I left off. Is there a program I need to convert my files into the right format? Thanks in advance. :)

I think WP7 reads audible. I'm not 100% sure about this, but I know that the Zunes do.

edit: El Oh El.

WP7 doesn't support any form of audiobooks right now. It seems that Audible and OverDrive are working on WP7 compatibility, but there's no official solution so far, which is pathetic. What you can do: Rip the book as mp3 file and change the category to podcasts. The book will show up in the podcast section and then it will support things like audio bookmarks (continue where you left off).

Thanks. This actually works. :) I'm kinda surprised that they haven't thought about audiobooks, but it shouldn't surprise me. :p

Latest news is the canned pushing the update and are working on a hot fix since the update borked for many people.

Hate on me if you will, but confidence building this is not. :|

This is a pretty massive black eye for wp7.... they can't even get a simple update to the update to go out seamlessly and are gonna have to release a third update just to fix the first one.

I think this is a good test for the service, infrastructure and the WP7 team. If they screw this up, the internet will kill them. I mean, problems with updates happen. You have this on phones, consoles etc and some of the devices might even brick, but if they can't get this simple update right, there's not much hope. I was a wise decision to slowly roll out this update.

This just goes to show how complicated it can be to release an update for multiple devices on multiple carriers.

I'm hoping NoDo updates goes a lot smoother for everyone. Hopefully they won't have the teething problems they're having right now, and the updater itself is now updated, so perhaps the issues we are currently having won't happen with the new updater.

Small bump in the road in all honesty.

C'mon guys, give MS a break. It's their first update and people are already losing hope on the OS. Sure, we never want issues to arise, but these things happen and we can only hope MS learns from their mistakes.

It's Microsoft's fault for setting expectations they couldn't meet. Microsoft promised that the first update would come quickly and with no hassle. This isn't even a 'real' update and there are already problems. *smh*
