If I wasn't had by the balls in contract and it wasn't gonna cost me so much to get an iPhone I'd bail with the iPhone 5.

Can someone explain the different updates and what they entail? Nodo and Mango

NoDo just brings copy/paste, some bugfixes, and application performance improvements.

Mango will bring IE9 (with HTML5), Multitasking, Twitter account support, and lots of other stuff we don't know about yet.

You should have done that originally then, IMO.

I chose WP7 over an iPhone, Android or BB device based on what it does now, not on some hope that it would be worth it eventually. If and when the updates come I will (hopefully) be even happier with the additional functionality, but right now I really do not care enough to get worked up over it.

This is the position that I am in as well..

I was tired of Android.. and had no interest in going back to iPhone.. I love my Samsung Focus.. I'm just wishing that the bugs that I've been encountering (albeit infrequently) since November would have been fixed by now.

Copy and Paste isn't a big deal, I've gotten used to the app performance.. but stupid bugs like the marketplace crashing are keeping me from just browsing the marketplace looking for cool apps.

As it is now, I don't install any apps that weren't recommended somewhere because then I have something to search for instead of having to browse..

I'm more frustrated that coordinating an update seems to be so difficult for Microsoft.. and that they think 2 updates per year is adequate.. I'd be ok with 2 feature updates per year, but in the meantime I want bug fixes for the annoying little shit that hurts the WP7 experience for me as a user.

It doesn't do what it says it does now because it's buggy as a mother fucker. I'm not talking about added features. I get all kinds of random fucking issues though like neither weather app updates the live tile for me, TWC app crashes all the time, the marketplace always crashes, apps are slow, the actual fb app sort of updates, the camera settings not saving sucks etc....

None of this is added functionality, and I don't see how I would have known this shit before hand.

FYI: It's been 118 days since Microsoft said they were going to ship "a compelling update very, very soon". About 40,179,000 babies were born since then. The Tunisian Revolution and Cablegate also happened.

hehe

Camera settings not saving is a feature, if I recall. lol.

I'm in the extremely fortunate position of having bought my Focus off contract, having a nexus one with gingerbread as my "backup" phone, and (more importantly) having given last years phone upgrade to my wife. Her update, which is now mine, is due in June, which means I can upgrade to the new iPhone 5 for free after selling either this phone or the n1.

I actually haven't decided what to do yet, despite this update fiasco. I still love Zune and Xbox, but this platform won't be complete in my mind until mango, and now I just don't know when or even if this phone will get that update. There just isn't a perfect platform out there anyway, so I guess a lot will depend on what iPhone 5 will be, and what we will know about mango in June.

Agreed. Buying a phone based on future hopes doesn't sound like the best idea to me. I've had an HD7 for about a week now and it's fine for me. I still look forward to updates of course but it's not like I'm going to bail out because updates are late or anything.

You had your phone for a week so I don't think your one to put in input on this like most of us that have been posting since launch.

Seriously when you get something like the alarm bug then you'll understand why some are pulling their hair out.

Dude, they said it once and after it was clear it would be delayed, they never talked about it again.

118 days? Holy shit, not bad, not bad.

It's amazing, when you think about it. The update was finished in late December and it's still not officially available. Maybe it was a little native to believe in the vague, official release time frame we got at MWC. I have the feeling that they just don't get it. Again.

But hey, at least Exchange works, so it's not a downgrade at work.

As long as your alarm actually goes off when it should so you can get to work! Amirite!

It's not that we buy phone base on future update but we bought the phone because Microsoft promise there would be meaningful and compelling (their words not mine) update "coming soon". (Who would have thought Microsoft definition of soon meant 4+ months).

I can do without cut and paste but what I want is bug fix, stop the random crash, fix all the annoying little things about the phone UI (which of course we wouldn't be getting this update but I though we would be getting the first update in Jan and other bug fix to follow).

What really worry me, is how right Paul Thurrot is. He said there would be not be first update until March and possibly later March and early April a few months back. Now he predicting Mango to be 2012 and I think he is right. Microsoft still at lost on how to compete in today mobile market.

Anyway, I am long past angry and move on to acceptance. The platform is a failure and Microsoft still continue to fumbling around while padding themself in the back because they have phone that as good as iPhone and Android at (their) launch.

If the bi-yearly update is a confirm thing, then yeah their new mobile platform is as good as dead.

I have phone upgrade coming up in a year, my regrert is I should have wait and not upgrade my kids phone last year then I would have two more upgrade available this year.

I will probably go back to iPhone 5 (*sigh*) since everyone else in my family is using it and I can use facetime if Microsoft stay on this present course.

And yeah, there is no comparison the speed in which Apple move to upgrade their OS or how fast Google pump out the next Androids phone.

If my phone was that buggy I might feel like you, but it isn't.

The Weather Channel updates the live tile on my Focus fairly regularly, but I open the app to check if I want to make sure it is (mostly) accurate. I have also never had the app (TWC) crash on me, and I check several times every day. The only issue I have with TWC is if I am in a very poor connection area, it is slow to update.

Yes, I have had the Marketplace crash on me, but I'm not in it enough to classify it as "always". Typically I know of an app I want to get based on reading about it somewhere else, so I open the Marketplace, find the app and download it. I have never had it crash doing that, only when I am browsing around randomly for a while, which is seldom as I have more than enough apps installed to keep me busy.

The camera settings are annoying yes, but I do not use my phone to take "real" pictures, so it isn't that important to me. The video recording is actually surprisingly good for me though, enough so that I haven't used my camcorder since getting the phone.

As for FB, I'm not sure what you mean there. I usually check my feed using the People hub and it updates fine as far as I can tell. If I want to check other notifications (birthdays, photo albums, etc) I can use the app and it has worked fine for so far.

The only issues I have had with my Focus that have actually bothered me, was some of the games that had bugs which caused them to crash when booting (Rocket Riot and Fruit Ninja for me). Both now work fine for me though, and I am very pleased with the performance overall.

The creative guys laughed when I told them about it. And they stopped when I mentioned that one morning when some of them were late, because of a certain daylight saving bug. Then again, I laughed at them back then, so I guess I deserve it. Karma's a bitch.

Do you have a microSD card installed? I tried a microSD based on what Paul Thurrot said had worked in his phone since launch without problems. After a week, after running fine with 14 GB of data stored, it started hanging up while syncing with Zune, and would randomly turn off. I took the microSD out and it has done fine since.
As others have said, I like the UI and am happy with the Focus so far. I do not text a lot. I look at news, email, and weather on the phone.
I have had Weather Bug installed since January 15th. It has not crashed one time. It updates every hour. The marketplace did crash two times while installing third party apps. It usually does fine with updates to the apps via the 3G network.
I realize your experience is completely separate from mine. Perhaps go by the AT&T store and trade it out? Try a new one and see if the problems persist. Or if you have insurance, say yours got stolen, buy an AT&T Go Phone for $16 to use for a few days (since they will turn off your original sim card), and try a new device.
A friend has the LG Quantum, she text's a lot and loves the keyboard. No problems with her phone for the last 2 months.

The thing about the camera app is that it didn't bug me until I discovered just how great the Focus camera really is. This thing is seriously iPhone 4-level good once you toggle on WDR, anti shake, etc. And macro shots are also really impressive. I think I'll link some pics I've taken with my phone that show how great the camera can be when I get home. I know a lot of reviews did say the camera was good, but its still an underrated part when compared to the screen and weight, which is what most reviews mention.

On a similar note does everyone's flixster live title update all the time? I swear mine was stuck on a crappy picture of Natalie Portman for like FOREVER, and then she went away and I just have the stock logo.

I only used Flixster for a short time. Remember when someone in this thread had a really, really cool Tron 2.0 "theme"? He used Flixster for one of the Tron themed tiles, but mine never, ever updated. So I deleted the app. :D

edit:

At least some developers are happy about WP7.

Fruit Ninja, besides being an excellent game, is one of seven applications that has grossed over $100,000. Not bad for a new platform. What’s very telling is the comparison to Android. Fruit Ninja has grossed over $150,000 on the Windows Phone 7 platform. It has sold more units, at a higher price than Android. The developers brought in less than $20,000 from Android. That’s seven times more revenue generated from a much smaller user base, that will no doubt see growth once Sprint and Verizon release WP7 phones in the coming weeks and months.

edit: Well, that's embarrassing. Turns out the numbers were wrong.

My Flixster tile updates every week or two with the top movie from the box office, so right now it is Rango.

That's odd, Fruit Ninja's market page says:

INSTALLS:
100,000 - 500,000

I'm surprised they've only made $20,000? That's a HUGE amount of refunds, if refunds are even counted in that number. Weird.

Ms has only one company to beat this quarter to be taken really seriously, and that company was themselves. They can't even get out of their own way.

LOL@the :D

I swear Brotkasten we must have like phones that are brothers as half of our stuff is always acting up where as other people have phones that work just fine. LOL

Red headed step children I swear.

My HTC Surround is rife with bugs. I need to exchange it, its that bad. I'll post details when I get home.

Nice phone when it works.

Hey, the smileys are still working here. :lol And yeah, maybe my phone was build by Samsung, who knows!

Anyways, Microsoft France says second half of March, Microsoft US now says March 21.
Microsoft PR in the U.S. said they are “looking into” the NoDo update situation. More to come (I hope).

I heard from one of my WP7 contacts today that Microsoft’s new target date for the NoDo rollout is the week of March 21.

Honestly even if WP7 were to never receive a major upgrade I would prefer it over the current version of iOS. Live tiles are simply that good to me. That I can check so many things with a quick flick and glance is great. I'm sad that other people are having problems that are preventing them from enjoying this great platform. Hopefully Microsoft gets off their hands and handles future updates in a more timely manner.

Edit: Also, ZunePass.

I honestly care about the reactions to all this way more than I care about the update itself.

What will Paul Thurrott say about the delay? Will Microsoft tell us what's going on? Will they tell us that they've never confirmed a release date and just ignore everything else?

Dell Venue Pro supposedly coming out on Rogers on March 17th for $99 on 3 years / $449 outright. I think I'm gonna hold off until "Wrigley" considering the current state of affairs. I don't really need a phone right now... I just want to play with WP7 :P

Wouldn't surprise me if Thurrot drops the Focus as a main phone until the mango update comes out. He's using WP7 since July 2010 and nothing happened since then. He must be really pissed.

Microsoft was kinda open about the pre-update issues few weeks ago.
http://windowsteamblog.com/windows_...-answers-about-our-first-software-update.aspx
I'd appreciate it if they'd do a blog post like that again. It certainly didn't hurt.

They gave us "first two weeks of March", because it was probably hard to point to a specific date. Remember, that was the first release date/time frame for the NoDo update they ever mentioned. Everything else was just speculation and rumors (which is totally Microsoft's fault btw).

Do you know what I miss? Engineering 7. It was like the best thing Microsoft ever did. I wish they'd be this open with WP7 and I doubt they'll do the same for Windows 8, which is really sad. http://blogs.msdn.com/b/e7/archive/2008/08/14/welcome.aspx Good times.

Here's a picture of guava growing in my yard. I took that with my focus, I believe I used macro for that, not sure, but I know I used wide dynamic range for that one. Make sure to see the large version. So that's what got me to bug the folks on the WP7 blog about the camera settings, since I would like both dynamic range and anti-shake on by default.

same... not saying I'm not interested or excited, but I can wait since I bought it knowing it would be some time "as is"

long term for me is 2 more generations 5-6 years with this ecosystem and I'm looking forward to it. Maybe not Samsung again though.

Your picture looks really good. The camera is the only thing I don't like about my Optimus 7, because it sucks (or I didn't find the right settings). So now Samsung has another selling point besides the SAMOLED screen. I guess it's time for Nokia to step in.

On my Focus I notice it take about a day or two after installing and set the live tile option that the tile become "active". I never have problem with Flixster, AP or Weather Channel app as far as live tile update both with and without SD card install. (I don't have SD card in my current Focus and it works fine, but it also worked fine before that when I used to have SD card in it).

So far only thing that doesn't work right for me is Podcast album cover for Zune. It just display empty blank tile. (The cover show up on other app like TwiT or Podcast! or Bringcast....I am thinking it's my Zune software not properly transfer the cover).

Below are pictures I took with Focus and upload to Flickr using the app. Color is a little off but it take better macro picture than my digital camera... another picture without macro no flash, indoor setting of tulips and red vase.

I really like what MS has done with WP7, but fuck it. I'm this close to just deciding to use my early upgrade in a few months and pick up an iPhone 4 or 5. This is just getting ridiculous. I'll take a look at WP7 again in a year or two when WP7 should hopefully be out of this annoying growing pain period.

I kind of wish Microsoft would just release the software updates independently of the OEM firmware updates. I just know this hold up is due to some Samsung nonsense. NoDo is already out there and floating around on Dell and HTC handsets, and Samsung has typically been horrific when it comes to Android updates...

I thought that was pretty obvious.

Surprise, surprise. Neowin has been informed that the "NoDo" update has been delayed, due to Microsoft itself. Carriers worldwide have approved the update, but Microsoft has likely delayed it due to issues with the pre-update on Samsung phones.

And even the Microsoft support admits the update was delayed.

At least according to Microsoft Support, it was indeed scheduled for the 7th:

You are right, the NoDo update was suppose to be released on March 7th, but it has been postponed. We don't know a date yet, but Microsoft will push the update soon.
Like previous dates, what is happening here is obvious: Microsoft sets an internal window-for-release, first it was January, then February, then early March, now late March...but due to ongoing issues with carriers, OEM support/Samsung problems, the dates keep getting pushed back. So when these "rumored" dates appear, they are true...for the moment. But things change and they evidently change quickly.

Again, the new date is supposed to be March 21, so mark your calendars (or don't). Meanwhile in Cupertino: Rumor: iOS 5.0 in April

According to Microsoft, after uninstalling and re-installing an application 5 times, the sixth time the user will be charged once again for the privilege of using the app.

Given that Microsoft has suggested removing applications as a solution for update woes, we find this restriction rather ridiculous.
This will definitely influence how many Apps I purchase.

Yes. According to the licensing terms, customers are allowed to download an application to 5 phones at a time that use the same Windows Live ID.

It's the same as everywhere else.
