I am undecided on whether to get the Focus or Surround. I am considering the Surround because of build quality and storage. Thoughts?

The Focus has a much better screen and a much better camera, two very important items. Plus, 8gb Sandisk cards seem pretty stable based off xda and that's all you need to match up in storage.

I read this earlier I was gonna do it but one commenter said it took them like 20 tries...I might just wait...maybe.
There's a update status bar that fills pretty quickly. It only took me 2 tries, just turn off the internet before the update bar reaches the end.

So I solved my dilemma—I'm getting a WP7 device through work and getting an iPhone for home.

it's a little annoying to carry around two phones. I did it for a while with a BlackBerry and iPhone. Switched full-time to BlackBerry shortly after. Any reason you can't just stick with WP7 or iPhone as your sole handset?

sweet thanks so ... do you know... will we still get prompted by ATT when their Nodo becomes available? what about focus/ATT specific fixes that are in the update?

This is just an OS level update.. at&t only put applications and a splash screen at boot on the device.. there are no specific at&t customizations to the OS..

The At&t section of the marketplace still works..

I doubt we'll get prompted for NoDo again as the version number will match the latest.

So, just got myself an LG Quantum on a plan after my last (incredibly shitty) phone managed to lose itself. Good ridance I say.

Can someone tell me what I should be doing with this phone?

Best app's, games, functions etc?

Fast NoDo game loading speeds! (via wmpowerusers)

After you get the NoDo update on your HTC Windows Phone, your games will open way faster! For example, Fruit Ninja opens over 3x faster, and Rise of Glory loads individual missions over 7x faster than before NoDo! Now having a storage card (vs NAND memory like in the Samsung or LG phones) is no longer a disadvantage since games load at a reasonable speed now.
Later today, we will have a complete breakdown of over 30 different game loading and resuming speeds. Stay tuned for it! For now, you can rest peacefully knowing that Fruit Ninja loads in 10 seconds rather than 32 seconds!

Pretty impressive video, to say the least. Speeds launching/resuming games has decreased considerably! They mention they'll have a full breakdown of over 30 different games later today.

I'd get the HD7S if you're thinking AT&T and HTC.
FWIW, I got the Surround. It was only a penny(!) because our work accounts have contracts and I was eligible. If I don't like it I won't have to feel guilty about it.

The build quality issue was important to me as well.

It's a work phone, so the camera does not matter and I am not sold on the super AMOLED in the sense that I don't think it is leagues better. This is just my sneaky way of getting to use a WP7 device on someone else's dime (or penny if you saw my previous post).

One is a work phone, the other is personal. If I am going to be stuck with one I'd rather it was the iPhone because it's a known commodity to me.

is it true it will relock every time it syncs to zune?

Unless you edit the registry, it will relock. Also will not work after No Do update as far as unlocking. Phone stay unbranded though, because you rewrite the registry string.

So far I just don't see the drawback of having my phone unbranded on At&t, it's not like they are going to put out awesome exclusive apps or features. Only thing I got from At&t is shitty service and blocked update.

It is way better but on retrospec with all the Samsung device problem such as headset/mic bug, GPS bug etc yeah, HTC probably not a bad choice especially if you don't mind the weight of the phone.

do we leave the string value at 000-88? or will changing back to ATT-Us after updates rebrand and is that cool too?

by the way here is the tool that allows a toggle to keep focus unlocked after Nodo or Zune sync. MUST BE applied prior to NODO.

VanMardigan said:
I have NoDo, that's it.

I thought the update also include new phone firmware (or that's what Microsoft was saying on their blog). I have No Do, but the mic/headset bug is still there and anti-shake is still default to off.

That is pretty neat app. I never figure out how to edit the string to keep it unlock so I just skip that step and went to unbrand my phone. I can see the benefit of sideload some of the stuff though, having a button to toggle wifi, data mode is really nice especially at my work where I sometimes in area that doesn't allow phone or phone signal is block (and thus kill my battery).

EDIT: NVM

Okay I'm doing things the long way.

I'm stuck on the SamsungRegistry.xap file...

What am I to do with it? E-mail it to myself on my phone? I tried that and it didn't do anything? I am confused?

that's why I was wondering if the AT&T final version will have a firmware update?

the three sideload apps I decided I had to have were LED flashlight, compass and a color editor for the Live tile colors. :D

by the way... got unbranded, unlocked, blocked reblock and the Feb update failed twice so far, trying 3rd charming time now. :D

still an error... is there a need for the Feb update first? or am I doing it wrong?

error 800705B4, I have done everything listed so far except uninstall more apps

Okay I have the Samsung Registry App installed, but I'm confused what I am suppose to do in it?

WTF should be under the

Value (Read/Write)
___________

_ String
_ Dword

Read Write

What should be under the Value and what circle dotted String or Dword? Then what hit Write?

Here you go -

http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=12473375&postcount=83

After you get your device unlocked, just use the application deployment tool from the dev kit (It has a menu item in your start menu) and point it to the xap file you can download from the link above (Rafael's post)

Then open it up on your device.

It should be defaulted to hklm\system\platform\DeviceTargetingInfo\MobileOperator

Leave the radio button next to STRING selected and hit the Read button

The second box should read Get String: ATT-US if you haven't modified it.

Put the cursor in that box and hit back/delete until the box is empty.

Type in 000-88 and then hit the write button.

After you do that, hit the read button again - It should now display Get String: 000-88

If it does, exit the app and reboot your phone.

Connect it to Zune and you should receive the pre-NoDo update.

After that, connect it again and see if it finds NoDo.. if it doesn't try the VPN stuff and the counting/data connection disable, etc.
here you go from page 113

Does this work on getting the preupdate to? I did my phone unlock steps already, but I need the preupdate 1st on my focus!

This worked for my LG Optimus on the Telus network. I had to try it a few times. I killed my wifi after about 3 seconds or so and the update came up immediately. I didn't unlock it or anything special.

I am under assumption that if Microsoft is pushing update out to unbranded Focus then it would have the latest Focus firmware (if any) on it. I don't think they would sent out update to Focus phone if they don't have that firmware OK from OEM. They also push out Focus update for Rogers phones. I didn't do the Hungary server trick or unplug my internet connection, I just simply unbranded the phone and it just update for me (first the pre-nodo) and then nodo.

May be uninstall all the apps and un-sync all your contents see if that help. Someone else here did that and it works for him.

Forgot to add, I have my phone in plane mode the entire time.

Bleh, I wish I sideload some of those apps when I had the phone unlock. Anyway I did not rebrand my phone to the evil At&t and so far I haven't have any problems texing, getting call etc.

LoL so I was worried my phone had be relocked cause I have a Focus and yada yada yada...

Basically I resigned to you know start over from scratch... to use the chevron unlocker...

Welllllll.... I started over and replugged my phone in and somehow BOOM... February Update appeared before I could get going!

IDK WTF I DID EITHER! LMFAO

EDIT: Preupdate just finished... now I'm clueless as to what section I got to or how I got the preupdate to try and now get the real deal update. LOL

You should still have that samsung registry editor app on your phone, if you can't get no do, follow instruction above and edit the registry string to essentially unbranded your phone. I set mine to that 000-88 as suggest for original Hungary server trick and it just prompt me for no do update.

EDIT: NVM FIXED....

For some reason my shit says...

Code:
GetString : GetString : 000-88

Why does it say GetString twice?

antiquegamer, thanks for all the answers... yea I'll try airplane mode soon... deleted all my pics and music and dropped about 12-15 apps and cleared my search, map and explorer history as MS suggested

edit:

again this is for the Feb Pre-update still

Yeah thanks for all of the help everyone. I can connect to the Hungarian server shit, but no luck on the update. My timing is probably off so I'm gonna use a stop watch thing to make sure and try and improve my odds. So far no good, but hopefully soon!

I don't remember if mine did that, but I can't check it anymore, somehow Microsoft nuke that App (It was working yesterday after No Do I think but now when I click on the app it said App has been revoke please uninstall)

yes that what it will say after a sideload app is trying to open in a RElocked phone

Did you put you phone in airplane mode? I am not sure if mine was just a fluke but I didn't even get a chance to run that Hungarian server program or use the internet disconnection trick as soon as I plug the phone in the 2nd time it just prompt me for update. May be Microsoft read all my bitching and crying here and decide to grant me update to shut me up.

As a current owner of the Sprint Touch Diamond (Windows Mobile 6.5.3), should I jump to grab the HTC Arrive (HTC 7 Pro)? Currently, my phone allows me to tether, listen to groveshark, announce directions from voice-prompt GPS, and check e-mail/weather quickly (via HTC Sense).

I want a WP7 phone without a keyboard.

For those who use touchscreen key input, how is it? Is it usable compared to Android/iOS?

Ah, I see, so I guess the phone stay unlock until you reboot. I reboot the phone today because I was checking the mic/headphone bug. Darn, I should have sideload all that stuff first.

I hope someone figure out how to unlock the phone because at the rate Microsoft is moving, I don't mind getting the little thing like ability to turn on/off wifi/data connection on my home page instead of having to go through that setting menu.

If all the aformention features are necessity for you then no.

I like the virtual keyboard, it feel just as good as the iPhone to me. (I used iPhone for 3 years, not sure how it's compare to Android though).

Grabbed a stopwatch gadget for Windows 7 so I could accurately judge the time verses counting in my head. Just got it to work!

15% downloaded! NoDo here I GoGo!

Best of luck. Mine went pretty quick. With all you guys having trouble getting No Do I guess I will not mess with mine and try to reverse it back to pre-No Do to sideload stuff.

Well, what's missing? The only thing I know Bing doesn't do voice prompt GPS. Right?

As for grooveshark, that's not a deal breaker for me, but a GPS program certainly is. I find it strange how WP7 doesn't have that right now as WM6 version of Bing has it. Is that supposed to come to Mango?

Nope, no turn by turn navigation. Yeah we are just as suprise as you, that that Microsoft own phone still have the crappy Bing compare to the one on iPhone and Android.

As for Grooveshark, I don't think there is official app but there's a MusicShark app. (I don't use grooveshark so I can't tell you how it work).

Oh, no tethering either (not officially anyway).

E-mail / weather work good with Live Tiles, not sure how much info you need but what it offer is adequate for me but I am coming from iPhone.

There will be a lot of features you are going to miss for sure and I as well as many wish Microsoft would move faster. Turn by Turn navigation should have been coming up now, along with better Bing search along with host of other little things such as better Messenger client. My wife start using IM due to phone restriction at her work but the IM on Windows Phone is crap...now I know why so many of you are complaining about it.

damn... airplane mode and all kinds of things and no go on the Pre-nodo Feb update.... 7 tries

just times out on the last part.

Got No Do today. March. Who would've thought that Mexico's carrier would handle the update faster than other countries!

Has anyone else's keyboard response slowed? I hope it's not an SD issue. I have 3 conversations that have never been deleted since I got the phone. Could that be the issue? I wouldn't think so, but who knows.

It's not even consistent in doing it. Just seems to be at the worst times when I need to send a quick text and it's catching up to my inputs.
