I don't know about the unofficial solution, but all I had to do yesterday was to click the "restore" button in the Zune software client, wait and I was back on NoDo. Pretty easy.
 
I don't expect mango for another two months or maybe even more given the NoDo delays, and I've been using the beta for a month or so. I'll take 1/4-1/3 of the year using a much better version of the OS, even if there will be some hassle when its time to go back to NoDo for the official release.

is this true of all windows phones? i have the HTC Trophy on Verizon. i didn't think it could be upgraded yet.

Every phone can be upgraded, including your Trophy. The newer Samsung Focus v1.4 are the only exception, because Samsung fucked up. But in the end, every phone will get Mango.

All you need is a developer account, a developer unlocked phone or that unofficial solution.

Actually, if microsoft has put out the nodo update for the 1.4 focus, which I think they were.., I'd think mango was possible for that device too.

At any rate, my v1.3 Focus took mango like a champ.

Shit, I guess I better load Mango then. I was kind of worried about the having to downgrade back to NoDo process. But if it's that easy, why not, I suppose.

Save the first NoDo backup. Don't lose it.. make several copies..
 
the 1.2 version of the unlocker thing makes a backup of your nodo and saves it in a seperate folder. there is a bat file you can run to restore it back to that state, whatever else subsequently happens. just don't delete the folder it creates in the c drive and you're all set.

Cheers. Was planning on doing backups at each stage to my WHS (saves state of the PC). I'll also copy the back up aswell.

the official Mango update can't come soon enough.

an acquaintance of mine was looking for a mobile phone with full outlook-synchronization capabilities. He almost made the jump to Windows Phone, but then found out, that it couldn't do Outlook tasks...

If MS isn't fast enough, they will probably lose that customer...

It syncs with Exchange and does exchange tasks.. but it doesn't sync with Outlook on the desktop.

But from what I understand all the functionality including tasks will work for windows live / hotmail and via the hotmail connector it's possible to put all the local data up in the cloud.

Right? Or would you say there are some significant downsides to that?

I can't speak to that.. I haven't tried it. I use exchange..

Short of using the hotmail connector, it doesn't sync with Outlook.. and I haven't read if that does tasks or not.

there's something under settings -> applications -> multitasking.

i didn't have anything going when i was in there though. dunno if that will help.

i'm testing the tasks list from the phone to hotmail/winlive. definately works via an exchange server. waiting to see if the sync goes through... looks like it should anyway.

edit: going to guess not. it says in outlook 'tasks (this machine only)'. so i guess not.

Processes don't run in the background. Apps stay suspended in memory until you exit them with the back button or until the OS needs the resources and tombstones them.

They have things called background agents that handles periodic network access and other tasks for apps that aren't running and a background audio service for apps so they can play audio in the background.

Nothing outside of Microsoft's own applications truly "runs" in the background.
 
I have a 16GB HD7....and the backup phase took 52 minutes.

I think the iOS back system is much better. I dont need for the music to be backup.

iTunes is a lot better than Zune, when it comes to device/phone management. I've said it many times, but I really wish the next software update will be much better in this regard. The fact that we've seen nothing yet worries me a bit. I refuse to accept that 4.8 is all they did.
 
anyone have a chevron phone? I wanna hear about the homebrew stuff. my buddy won't move to wp7 from Android unless there's a T9 keyboard available.
 
I'm officially among the Mango users as well now. Took a bit of time to update, but it was fairly painless. I don't seem to have any issues with my memory card either. The storage capacity looks fine. Now to test out what this thing can do.
 
Might be a dumb question I know but how do I back up the NoDo update? Unless update.bat backs it up?

I would find all of the backup files and copy them to another location, like a usb stick or another hard drive. I don't know the path off hand.
 
Being a developer evangelist who is focused on Windows Phone, I get asked all the time about features that users want added to WP7. I completely understand when someone comes up to me and says : “ WP7 would be great if it had “Such and Such” feature. What I don’t think many people understand is that, what is needed for one person, is not necessarily at the top of the list for others.

No multitasking in my options. I did see background apps but I have none so no go.

Only reason why this bothers is when I for example exit my game via the home buttons and then press "back" it goes to the game again. This is annoying as shit. Not sure why they didn't follow iOS/Android in this regard where the back button ends when you're at the desktop.

Also, is the MP3 player supposed to show up when you press the volume buttons? It does now every time, but didn't before I installed some songs.

Apps need to be compatible with Mango and none of the currently available apps are. Devs can submit Mango-enabled apps by the end of the month.

This was a design decision, to have at least some kind of task switching in the pre-Mango versions. It thought it was pretty clever.

The player controls only show up when you have a song in your now playing list.

I do applaud the different design, and actually agree with it being clever if it would at least have a menu showing all things (like when you click hold the back button on Firefox), that's why I thought something like task manager could be good. edit Jesus, this is actually there. I just held the back button and it came. I'm so dumb -_- Still a shame Start isn't all the way to the left

I've tried going into zune music again but the song just stays permanently in the playing now list, don't see a close button.

If I'm on the home menu? Nowwhere, similar to Android it's the beginning of everything. Having home menu -> internet -> home menu again -> my game -> home menu again just annoys me and feels illogical because I'm used to the other phones

That's exactly what happens when you press and hold the back button in mango. It shows you the last five apps you used and resumes them instantly, including games. But like I said, the apps must be compiled for Mango, to resume instantly or have other background functions.

Maybe it'll just take getting used to. To me, if I leave an app to send a text message and I hit back, I would expect it to take me back to the game.
