it looks like a great test device. not a software test, i mean like an everyday ware and tear test.

I'd be really surprised if this has anything to do with Windows Phone.
Same here. I’ll bet Microsoft will put together another conference later this year specifically for the Mango release.

According to Pocket-Lint, the Mango roll-out will begin at September 1, one day before the IFA in Berlin starts.

Multiple trusted sources have confirmed to us that the start of next month will see the new OS, available to developers over the summer, launching on new handsets, as well as becoming available to current WP7 customers.

Previously, Microsoft has opted simply to say "Fall" when asked about its date of availability.

The launch date, we now understand, has been chosen due to its importance in tieing in with IFA, Europe's largest consumer electronics show in Berlin, and means that companies like Samsung, Acer, ZTE and LG will be able to show off new devices with Mango installed.

just curious if anyone here has done any android apps? I have a WP7 app that I've been working on for some time, but after playing around the the asus transformer, I sort of want to port it over to that. I don't really know any Java but i've been doing C# and the syntax is close so not worried about that. Curious if anyone can point to somewhere where a wp7 dev can get some type of footing in the adroid world.

yes, I know about mono, but the files (packages, beans, etc) are kinda throwing me and i'm completely lost when it comes to the layout files.

A slap in the face to Paul Thurrott, lol. I like it though, I'm ready to shed the "beta" tag and get official with Mango. Looks like they are at least slightly ahead of schedule, and with such a huge update to boot. Bravo, WP7 team, bravo.

So I bought this today hoping I can slip my Focus in without too many...adjustments. Just love the idea of combining my wallet and phone.

Update: It ended up working after some careful DIY slicing and dicing. Had to cut the edges to access the buttons, and took a lot of the top and bottom leather that reaches around the face of the device to make way for the sensors and bottom touch buttons, but it works given my Focus is a bit too wide for a case that's made for an iPhone 4. It's really freaking me out every time I leave the house to be missing the three pat check, keys, phone, wallet, to have my back pocket missing its usual occupant, but I dig the look and feel of combining everything into one. Really had to make use of the Sky Wallet/Evernote apps to catalog and document all that extra crap that ends up in the wallet, from store cards, to membership cards, due to the case's minimal design, but I've very happy with the results.

Also, I went ahead and bought a SanDisc class 4 32 GB MicroSD card after reading extensively and carefully monitoring which cards were working over time. I went with this card on Amazon for $50 after more than a few users claiming they filled it up and had it working without any problems for over 3 months now. Installation was surprisingly easy, as was formatting. Had a bit of a bump in discovering I would have to manually install a bunch of my apps again, it reinstalled some when I resynced, not sure why I didn't get all of them back. But I'm all set up again and the device so far is running fairly smooth with 16 GB filled. Happy as a clam right now, have some breathing room, device is full of content, case looks nice. Hopefully I'll be able to pop in the new Mango devices when/if I decide to go with one of the second gen'ers.

Recently got a Samsung Focus and be liking it so far, the screen is just the sex. Only downside is I have T-Mobile so the 3G/4G won't work on it. Oh well.

You only get apps that you download via Zune software, anything you get off the air will not be restore.

Dully noted. Most of my apps I've installed via the phone itself. I'm going to go on record and say if there isn't a nice Zune software update coinciding with the Mango release, that happens to include app management, I'll be sad.

Whats with the WP7 doom news lately? Annoying... especially when you get the same link from 5 people because they think they must convince me.

It ain't dead, but it sure needs a shot in the arm this fall. The article is a bit over the top, but some of its points are sound. WP7 needs some sort of momentum swing. We'll see.

See I think I've seen a lot more pro-WP articles than anti-WP. Especially following all the Nokia commitments that were revealed earlier in the week.

We just need more hardware and worldwide this time.

It's a shame WP Mango still doesn't support right to left language but what can you do.

As someone who does not own a smartphone yet, I'm really terrified about digging into the smartphone marked. I want one for the internet, GPS, calander, notes and useful tools - Less so than for games. I want a fast one with good battery that will last a long time.

The scary thing is that it seems like you are signing up with an ideology. Once you purchapse apps from one of them, it's tied down almost.

The metro UI looks amazing. If the Galaxy II gets a Mango version at a decent price, I think I will get it. The UI loookks so good.

I have no experience with Android, but I do have music purchased from Itunes on my Ipod. I guess that ties me halfway down the Apple path.

I hope Mango will become succesful.

C# to Java is indeed an easy switch. While I never ported a WP7 app to android, I did start out on an android app during my internship, coming from a .NET background and with one completed WP7 app in the baggage. Personally I picked up a book (that I wasn't very happy with, to be honest) and read the first few chapters, but eventually I just googled things as needed. I also had the luxury of asking experienced developers whenever I came across something I didn't understand, wanted some best-practice hints and especially how to get Eclipse to do what I wanted.

I will say, though, get an actual device to develop on. The android simulator is, well, pretty terrible. It's accurate, but infuriatingly slow; I doubt I'd have the patience to develop against it. You will also hate Eclipse if you haven't used it before and are used to Visual Studio.

And you'll probably wanna check out the Dev Guide and API reference. Google also tend to have pretty good taped programming lectures, wouldn't surprise me if they had a few on android as well.

Can you have custom alram clock alerts on wp7? If so can you set an entire song as an alart?

Almost all of the alarm clock apps drain the battery right now because the best they can do is run under the lock screen.. If you want battery left in the morning you need to use the built-in alarm.

Once mango hits, apps will be able to schedule alerts in the OS.. so I'm sure we'll see some great alarm clock applications then.

The built-in alarm clock doesn't support music.. only the pre-determined alarm tones.

Hey guys,

Yesterday I got the MS Connect e-mail to get the Mango Beta. But I don't know, where the backup is located on my Harddrive. Any ideas?

If I remember correctly, something like c:/users/youruser/appdata/windowsphonebackup. Sorry if path is incorrect (I'm not on a PC atm).

I think the mobile patent war got even more awesome. Today, Microsoft got the patent on sliders. :lol

Abstract

Mobile communications devices having moveable housings are described. In an implementation, a mobile communications device includes a first housing that includes a display device; and a second housing that includes a keyboard. At least one of the first or second housings are moveable between a first configuration in which the first housing substantially covers the second housing so the keyboard is covered and the display device is viewable and a second configuration in which the keyboard is exposed and positioned such that an outer plane of the keyboard is positioned in a substantially similar plane to that of an outer surface of the display device.

To be fair, I read the abstract again and it's not about generic sliders. They're talking about sliders, where the keyboard is in the same or similar plane as the display, when you open it. Kinda like the HTC G2/Desire Z.

fuck i hope canada gets the new dell WP7 phone. rogers really dropped the ball on venue pro.
I thought Dell dropped the ball on the VP. It took them half a year to fix the WiFi issues. Why would any operator pick this one up?

Yeah, I'm pretty sure it was just a lack of confidence in the product. Rogers had it on all their internal marketing and still didn't release it =/

Rejoice Windows Phone 7 people, i am really close to purchasing an Optimus 7.
However, i read the review on gsmarena, and the measurements on the quality of the headphone output were kinda worrying. It seems stereo-crosstalk is through the roof, which sounds really worrying. (The effect of this would be that left and right channel get mixed up and the stereo effect is lost or very weak)
Is there anyone here with an optimus 7 who could confirm this? (Just play a song that uses lots of left/right panning with headphones connected, and tell me if the effect sounds good)

I've been reading a ton of reviews lately as after my debacle with my current android phone i wanna purchase the right phone now, and it would suck if the phones headphone out had such a flaw, as i'd like to use the phone as an mp3 player quite often.

Can't you use the phones in a store and test it?

So, when is the second gen of Windows Phone being officially announced?
Never. Microsoft just cancelled the Windows Phone project. It was just a hobby for them. Too bad for Nokia, though.

No idea. September 1 was the last rumored date we got, October seems more likely.

I'd have to find a store that has the Optimus in stock, which might be difficult since i live in the middle of nowhere.
I was planning on ordering it from amazon. Worst case i'll order it anyways and use the 2 week return window in case it really is a problem.
Would be nice to just know it before ordering.
