Its really pissing me off now veetle and other streaming websites don't work on the phone...
Microsoft needs to support HTTP Live Streaming, which Veetle uses on iOS devices. Streaming sites will usually target that over Silverlight streaming since iOS has so much more penetration. Flash Media Server will support it natively soon too.

Its annoying. No flash no middle ground. Stuff like gameyrailers as well a decent YouTube would be nice.

So why don't updates get pushed out as fast as iOS? I remember reading an article on WPCentral about glitched games, and a lot said "the company has released a patch and is waiting for MS to approve it."

Is it because there are a lot more phones, so the patch has to be tested on all of them?

I'm not sure what you mean. iOS updates have to go through approval as well.

Also, for those on RTM mango, any noticeable differences in speed/smoothness/functionality? Any at all? I know the 2nd beta release was real close to final, but I want to know if anything jumps out.

I didn't say they don't, just they seem to get approved a lot faster.

I wonder if its a support thing? It seems like Apple handles most of the support for iPhone, where carriers handle most of the support for Android and Windows Phones. The carriers would spend more time testing the product to minimize the money spent on support.

Just a guess

Just read that Cnet link and the writer's review of the GPS navigation.

What the fuck Microsoft. The dead Windows Mobile platform does Bing navigation and auto-rerouting just fine.

Why is it so hard to implement that in WP7?

So I caved and updated to the RTM (really hope it doesn't block me from future updates!). I was wondering though, can you set custom message tones or do you need an app or something? I managed to set a custom ringtone fine but the 'New text or IM' part still only shows Alert 1-10.

You can only set custom ringtones for now. You don't have the ability to set custom alert tones.

I think a big part of why iOS updates seem to get approved faster is that apple doesn't announce when the carriers start testing, they don't need to wait for OEM drivers to be added to the OS and they aren't allowed to add anything of their own to the OS.

What makes you think app updates are approved faster on iOS?
I've heard a lot of horror stories about the approval process and it seems really bad with XBLA games. It goes from Rivio's "lets just say that Microsoft has a lot of lawyers" to the iDig it update, that was stuck in the approval process for 2 or 3 months (iirc). You can find more stories on the net.

did not know about this. i knew it would take some time to get approved. but 2-3 months ?!

Lets be clear, it doesn't take that long for every update, but I Dig it definitely had some troubles.
“Dear Customers,

I can hardly convey the frustration that we, at InMotion Software have felt with Microsoft during this process of updates. We are deeply concerned with the frustration that you have suffered through for so many months, when the bug first started appeared. We have submitted update, after update, after update to Windows and they continue to reject them for reasons unknown. As of a couple days ago we have a new Microsoft employee working with us on attempting to get our most recent update approved. We hate to be making so many excuses and giving you false hopes for the update, but, please understand that our hands are really tied here without Microsoft's corporation. The CEO along with the rest of the team at InMotion Software apologizes for this terrible inconvenience. I can only hope that an update will be released shortly, but I have very little to promise on since it is not under my stewardship.

Thank you,

Alexis Howard

support@inmotionsoftware.com

P.S. Financial dealings are dealt directly through Microsoft, you purchased from Microsoft if you desire a refund you must seek it from Microsoft.”

Sounds a bit like Apple and the AppStore, after they opened it. ;-)

So looks like my dvp is out of warranty. Is the earpiece an easy fix? Is it cheap? The hardware is same as the android venue probably, so that should make the repair/spares easier. But I'm assuming, so yeah.

^^ This.

There's also the lack of content on certain games...

I was surprised the Angry Birds update got out so fast.

Fruit Ninja is still lacking the pomegranate update iOS got forever ago.

Doodle Jump hasn't been updated with the extra levels.

How far behind is Pocket God? Has it ever been updated with new stuff?

how can it be out of warranty? don't you have a 1 yr factory warranty?

Ah, that's a blow. Will there be any way around it? Such a weird thing to leave out :/

I don't know whether its MS every time though. Like you said, some of the updates go out pretty quickly. I have apps where I get multiple updates a week, and then other apps where I don't get any updates for months, if ever. But this was the same thing when I was on iOS, and if they get much more updates now, its because devs are putting more resources in the iOS version (and rightfully so). I'd say that, aside from a few cases, its the devs that are to blame rather than MS. There are horror stories about Apple's process out there as well, so I don't buy the idea that MS is way slower than Apple in app updates. Outside of horror stories on each side, I think its a wash and the devs just have bigger teams and a bigger focus on their iOS apps, so they get more updates.

Quick question, I've been hesitant about updating to Mango betas because of the hassle f having to downgrade later to get the official release, but with the RTM build that's out there, if I install it to my phone, will I have to worry about doing anything down the line to get future updates, or is it pretty much the exact same thing as getting the official release early?

It doesn't include the OEM drivers for your phone.. I'd just tough it out until the final release if you're not willing to restore back to NoDo before the final release comes out.

Whats with the WP7 doom news lately? Annoying... especially when you get the same link from 5 people because they think they must convince me.

9. It wants no part of the open-source community

It might be anathema to Microsoft, but welcoming the open-source community into its mobile fold could help save its operating system. After all, Android has succeeded on the back of open-source technology. Mozilla is planning to do the same with its upcoming mobile operating system. But Microsoft believes that being closed is its ticket to the future. It’s wrong. And things will only get worse because of that.

What?

What??? I do not care for ringtones, but alarm clock tones OTOH... How did they STILL leave this out? I'm pissed :(

With mango, someone will build a better alarm clock application than the stock one anyway..

It's annoying, but it's not something that I personally care about.

Ughh, I am not sure if I want to go through all the hassle doing Mango update and have to downgrade back when the official one comes out ....

Update for unlock phone update shouldn't be far off I am assuming.

How stable is the Mango beta and RTM version for you guys that have it?

7712 (beta 2) is perfectly stable for me. I've had 0 freezes or random reboots.

Running a Samsung Focus (rev 1.3)

I've had some weirdness with twitter that ultimately led me to reset the phone. I was trying to delete my twitter account and it would re-sync windows live when I did and re-add my twitter account.. I thought resetting the phone would fix it but it didn't.. I think I got into some kind of loop when I revoked access from the twitter side and I hadn't removed the account from the phone yet.

Aside from that, I haven't had any significant issues with the beta. Going back to NoDo is very difficult for me after running Mango for several weeks.

Custom ringtones also work as alarm tones, it's just message/IM tones they left out.

HTC HD7 16GB for £151, yay or nay?

Just been given a second chance offer on one on eBay, few small scuffs on the bottom edge according to the listing but bar that seems to be in good shape.

edit - Went for it in the end, even if I don't like it I can trade it in and make money.

Has there been any new word about verizon and mango window 7 phones? I can upgrade my phone but I sorta want to wait.. even tho I've been waiting for over a year now.

Great phone...love the real estate the large screen provides. Enjoy!

Cheers :) Looking forward to getting my hands on it, and if I don't like it I can make around £20 or so on it so it's win-win for me.

Installed Birdsong Pro but live tiles are not working for me. Push notifications only work when you access the app, the fuck is this?

The one thing I hate about WP7 is the lack of a customer service support. Instead, you're given a messageboard. When it comes to matters on the Marketplace, you really need to speak to a representative who has access to your account. To be honest this alone would have put me off buying a WP7 handset if I had known before

Tell me about it.

I discovered this when trying to connect to a hidden Wi-Fi network to find that the only resource for help was a forum thread with a Microsoft rep saying that WP7 doesn't and never will support hidden Wi-Fi networks due to "obvious security reasons".

So the next day I returned the phone for "obvious shitty OS and customer support reasons".

Birdsong live tile works for me, but only for @ replies. Is it even supposed to work for your main feed? Seems like that would be quite the burden on your network connection while not being entirely useful for people who always have a constant stream of new posts coming in.

Hidden Wifi support is coming in Mango. :/
