I don't think that sways too many.... I think most were begging for a larger screen and this will not have that. Also I don't think the power whores were not really looking to ios anyways (that was always androids play).
In terms of UI - yes that's where Androids play because the UI is non-accelerated.

Games however are huge on iPhone ... and this offers a substantial power gain.

What the iphone still has done better than any other phone is the fit and finish of their devices..... and that is what wp7 desperately needs. Nokia can put out hardware that is on apple's fit and finish level (maybe the only oem).
Agreed

But I think they key will be for that ace rumor needs to be true (even if it doesn't launch until early 2012 it needs to be shown off)..... if it's just the searay I don't see too many choosing that over the iphone 4s.
Well Sea Ray still is a slightly bigger screen ... but yeah, if screen-size is a determining factor the difference isn't enough.

It will be interesting to see if that's how things pan out. ie. people would opt for a different phone if the screen was bigger ... but all things being equal (or close enough), they'd go for the iPhone 4S.

As a sidenote, I'm kind of surprised Nokia isn't offering a 4" model. There's a pretty big gap between offerings if two are 3.7" and the other is 4.3"

A simple question whats the best windows phone?
Right now, I'm partial to the Samsung Focus in the US.

Since there are a lot of phones at different sizes hitting soon (2 or 3 each from HTC, Samsung , and Nokia) ... I'd wait for reviews.

Can they stream Windows Media video files (WMV/ASXes) from registered sites?
Actually I'm not sure. Can you post a couple of links and I'll test them?

Just wondering or should we just wait till windows 8 phones/tablets to release.
I wouldn't expect that for over a year, so you might as well get one of the phones that are hitting in the next few months. I wouldn't expect W8 until around the time you'd be upgrade-eligible from a new phone.

How's the battery life?
Matters the phone. My Focus seems reasonable enough. I charge it over night and it lasts the day. Granted I just got Mango less than a week ago ... so I'll have to see how background apps impact its life.

In general though, I think it goes like this: iPhone > WP7 > Android in terms of battery life.

Unlike Apple, that's not something Microsoft can control. I'm still amazed that they were able to roll out the Mango update like that.

I think they could do more to build hype and excitement especially this week. Mango is well review by all the mobile site and everyone generally love the improvement. They should have follow up with new phone availability this week to keep hype going. Then week after more phone and then Nokia phone.

I do agree that so far Mango roll out have been impressive. It's great that they learn and set lower expectation but offer more like allowing beta user to update without rolling back or have most carrier on board to be "delivering" at the same time. (Even though many branded phone still waiting but there's a backdoor to getting update). I know I am sure glad I left my phone "unbranded" after NoDo.

They are planning a large-scale promotion - I suspect for the upcoming Nokias and Samsungs.

As a matter of fact, their upcoming cross-promotional (XBox, WP7, etc) marketing campaign is reported be the largest they've ever done on the CE side.

The new version of TuneIn is fantastic! I now have the Giant Bombast tile on my homescreen and can stream the newest version with a simple press. :D
How did you do this? I just downloaded the app, and most of the podcasts for giant bomb are from 2010.

There is a backup tool from XDA that lets you do a backup. It requires "Windows Phone Support Tool" but the downlaod link from there is dead. I wonder if anyone know where to download it? (yes I asked that question on XDA but no one seems to know/want to answer).

Reason I am asking is I found the SoftAP driver inside the Samsung Omina 7 firmware update package. I want to root the phone and put it there to see if that works on my LG Quantum. I want to back up the phone in case I screw up. I soft brick the phone earlier for messing the brightness setting.

? What are you referring to?
The music marketplace wasn't available in Canada yesterday even after the new Zune service went live here.

Yeah don't bother. Didn't someone from MS get fired for mentioning Nokia phones in a tweet? Maybe I'm remembering that wrong.

It's true. It was Joe Marini. Not only did he spit out some details, but he gave it only an 8/10.

He must not have received the memo that exclusive reviews must be at least a 9 out of 10.

I am sure hope so. It's awesome product they have and it's sad that people are not getting a chance to try it. Heh, I just got emails from Apple about iPhone 4s about 15 mins after I got email from Microsoft about Windows Phone mango update.

Any reason why I don't seem to have App Connect? When I do a search for a movie or something, there is no listing of apps in the results, even after pivoting.

I also heard there was an official Help/Hints app?

Has the Live game coming out tomorrow been announced yet? I'm anxious to try Hasta la Muerte. Minisquadron would be cool too.

Holy shit the mango update is amazing, especially regarding the XBL department. Any site where I can see a list of features and changes added in this update?

Not working for me either, wonder if its something on the back end. It works with products though, as well as restaurants.

wait it's not even out yet but googling it I found out it's been announced as T-Mobile's first Mango phone and guess what? My current plan is from T-mobile!!! Contract ended a long time ago and i've been just going month-to-month waiting on the new phones, so this could be a perfect fit. Here is the source: http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=8924
"out by the end of the year"...awesome
T-Mo's roadmap says 11/2 for the Radar, so it's just a month away.

Just installed Mango and something awesome happened on the drive home. My girlfriend messaged me and a sexy lady robot voice automatically read the text through my car stereo... And I could respond through text to speech! If you say "smiley face" it adds an emoticon. Totally wasn't expecting that. i'm loving Mango. I was happy just to have custom ring tones.

Yeah this review just made it come off as average: http://www.techradar.com/news/phone...bile-phones/hands-on-htc-radar-review-1009054

The white one does look fantastic but maybe I could do better. Been thinking about switching to Sprint but they're still on wimax and rumored to be setting up LTE in 2012 so any phone I get from Sprint will be wimax and not LTE. Then there's Verizon...sigh, not sure what to do.

I never thought this decision would be so hard and time-consuming lol but if you think about it your phone is something you use multiple times per day every single day and you'll be stuck with it for the next 2 years if on a contract so it's a pretty big decision.

All I know 100% is that my first smart phone will be using Windows Phone 7 Mango

this really is MS's chance to gain marketshare. the iphone's spec bump, i believe, will have a lot of people looking at Mango and Android phones. however, verizon, sprint, and t-mobile aren't helping by only carrying one windows phone. nokia better be kissing some serious carrier ass to get multiple windows phones on to the store shelves of every major carrier.

seriously, i've sent a few people interested at windows phone into t-mobile and verizon stores to find out later that they came out of the store with a new android phone. why? although the windows phones were on sale, none of the stores had demo units. WTF.

wait until the samsung and nokia phones are officially introduced.

The big Nokia World event is on October 26 where they reveal the Ace and others. I hope they deliver. Too bad the Ace will only be for AT&T

Will do. I've been so patient already with my contract ending like 6 months ago so might as well wait a few more

Heh, that's exactly how I found about the text to voice/voice to text feature.

Yesterday's Apple event disappointed but I'm sure the masses will buy millions. The lesson here is that Microsoft really needs to work on marketing, specifically branding/advertising. Can't wait for Nokia World, hoping to see a fantastic ad campaign unleashed worldwide after that.
who am I kidding? :(

Listened to last weeks episode of the TIMN podcast and I'm really surprised by Topolsky's opinion about Mango. Him saying that Mango is on par with iOS 5 is really surprising.

So I got an email saying to Update my phone to 7.5...

Where the fucks my update? It isn't on the phone and it isn't on Zune....

I'm so close to just buying an Iphone....

Status on the Mango roll out.
Within the first hours of making it available, we saw successful updates in every country, on every carrier, and for nearly every Windows Phone model. (To see which ones are currently getting it, see Where’s My Phone Update?) On behalf of the engineering team, I want pass on a big thank you for updating your phones so quickly, since it helps us gather the data we need to make decisions more rapidly.

In fact, the update success rates we’re seeing look so good we’ve decided to open the spigot ahead of schedule, and make Windows Phone 7.5 available to 50 percent of eligible customers starting right now. (Why not 100 percent? Because we’re still collecting and analyzing installation data from our smaller operators, and need to watch it little bit longer to make sure everything is OK.)

I know some of you have questions about how Windows Phones are selected to receive the update. Put simply, it’s done totally at random, with absolutely no preference for carrier, model, or country. Random sampling is an important engineering technique to accurately measure quality and pinpoint issues early. In some cases, this can have interesting consequences: A family, for example, can have identical Windows Phones, yet only one phone might get an update notification.

Bueller?
We don't have any info on that. Will they ever increase the resolution? Obviously. How will apps handle it? I don't know.

I guess I'm in the other 50%...

I checked on phone update on my phone. Nothing.

I checked on Zune when my phone was connected. Nothing.

I have a focus with ATT.

Do you have a 1.4 Focus? If not, just force it.

Curious to see how Microsoft improves their mobile services going forward, this is from Ballmer's letter to shareholders dated Sept. 2:

We're also investing in natural ways for people to interact with technology. For example, we'll bring the advances of Kinect beyond entertainment to business, science, education and medicine by connecting it to the Windows PC and the Windows Phone. Bing will have a broad impact beyond search as we apply its understanding of the world's people and knowledge to scenarios that help individuals accomplish a task. Imagine that instead of trying to print a boarding pass by finding a website and typing in a confirmation code you could simply say "print my boarding pass." There are so many opportunities to fundamentally improve how we interact with the range of devices and services by pushing the capabilities of natural user interfaces.

A few days ago I somewhere read that if you have Zune on the mac (os) you may not get the update and you should try it on a PC. I am searching but I forgot where I read that...
