Either I'm not understanding how Mango works or some developers are actively refusing to compile their apps into mango for some reason. The Amazon app updated and has no fast app switching. What's weird is that it actually mentions mango, but in a bad way, mentioning some bug or something they had to fix that was introduced by mango. The Bible app I use also updated, but no fast app switching either.

What gives? Aren't apps compiled with the new SDK automatically set up for fast app switching? Why would devs not take advantage of that? It sucks to see apps get updated, then not work with the multitasker.

I went to my local AT&T store. I really found the HTC HD7S to be really nice compared to Galaxy S2? Which one is better.

Our friends want their extra cell phone back so I need to get one today or tomorrow.

Thanks for the help guys. :)

You should really research Android v. Windows Phone more than HD7s v. Galaxy S2. The hardware on the Galaxy is pretty hot, but aside from maybe some high end games it probably won't make a huge difference. WP is just so quick and snappy even on hardware that's 2+ years old. Obviously I'm quite biased but I think that WP is superior unless you're really into customizing and tinkering with your phone. The experience is so much more smooth and well integrated. Also, if you have a Xbox you play frequently you'll see some synergy there and probably more once Windows 8 rolls out next year.

So far, WPCentral app is the only app I have that is full time Mango.

Shit sux.

You got it wrong. The Amazon app is not a Mango app. The update fixes a bug that appeared when you were running it on a device with Mango.

Is there a good place that lists all the new mango goodness in detail?

I tried linking my hotmail address with my schools gmail address and the gmail one seems to be freaking out.

Oh, and chat says no one is online despite facebook on my PC saying otherwise.

So that brings up the second part of my initial question, why are developers choosing not to update their apps to mango? The Amazon app could've and should've been updated to mango by now, if only for fast app switching. Now that MS allows you to update both pre and post mango apps independently, I get angry every time there is a non mango update to my apps.

Amazon's been putting a lot of effort in Android if you haven't noticed.

Amazon has its own Android marketplace and now soon a Kindle tablet powered by Android.

However, a simple recompile for the WP7 app is inexcusable.

It's probably because the Amazon app will get a bigger update with more and Mango-specific features (it was the demo app for pinning app features). The development of that update takes a bit more time, I guess.

However, it would surprise me if the app was already done and Microsoft was holding it and other apps back for a big marketing push. Remember the huge push of official apps we got, when journalists got the Mango beta and Windows Phone got more coverage because of that? I think they're doing something similar with Mango.

Didn't work.

I went to email+accounts

it says Facebook ATTENTION RECQUIRED so I click it and it says Not Updated. We're having problems connecting blah blah Error Code 0.

So I try the google mail, attention required. Click it. Tells me to update my info. So I put in my username and password. Save. And nothing happens. Still attention required.

You're really asking WP7 vs. Android.

Go with what you like. You're asking a cell phone recommendation in a WP7 thread.
if you really look at the history of this thread. it been fairly honest with its recommendations. if you were to ask this question in another thread, peoples inner fan-boy would come out.

I think the biggest difference is that many of us have actually used the other platforms and can give honest assessments, while a lot of Android and Apple fans have only used their platform and don't have a really good perspective to be able to compare. All 3 major platforms are worth consideration, and I'm honest when I give my advice to people on these boards and IRL, a lot of it depends on the person's individual needs and taste. A lot of the time, I consider WP7 the best choice (as it is for me right now), but not always.

To be fair, the recommendations and comparisons have been WP7 phones, not other platforms.

Just downloaded the game Bouncy Mouse (saw the review on wmpoweruser.com). It's pretty fun with good production values. Worth checking out the trial for sure (full game is .99 cents).

Ha, same here. I saw that and thought it looked pretty cool, and my son will love it.

Are you appearing offline on your phone? That makes it so you can't see Facebook chat contacts.

Well by not touching anything it started miraculously working.

I have a question about the email though.

My schools email is a gmail system, but its @husky.neu.edu

Would this be why its being a huge bitch?

Not really. It's surprising but everyone in this Thread actually recommends what they think is best for you/the person asking for a recommendation. There are very few people in this Thread who have used neither iOS or Android so it's pretty easy for everyone to compare the systems – and the best thing: if there's something to bitch about, everyone will bitch about it. :p

Forward those emails to a personal Gmail/Hotmail account.

I guess that's a good plan B.

Any word on a Mangofied facebook app? Livetile support for notifications? Being able to view groups?

That's the thing bothering me most. I get a notification that so and so has posted in this group, and the facebook app can't access it. Have to go to mobile FB to get it.

I'm not sure how many groups you have but I've set up my "friends" group to be essentially that. The live tile shows when I have new notifications of some sort (either in people or in Friend if they fit that group) and I view them through those.

If it's not working through "Add an account > Google", try "Add an account > other account".

See if your school provides IMAP instructions on their tech help section.

I think he's talking about Facebook groups, and yeah, it is annoying as hell. I use FB groups a lot for associative work, and it sucks not being able to access it directly from the app.

So, my HTC 7 Pro is still in the shop. They installed the touch screen I bought and it didn't work so they installed another and said it was ready. I went to pick it up and it still wasn't working though :/ he's going to try again but I'm not holding out much hope.

Edit: Also, when he switched it on to test it I noticed it came up with an error. "Your memory card is faulty" or some such. Has he totally fucked my phone?

Considering the Dell Venue Pro, it's rather cheap right now and I want a phone with 4" screen and qwerty keyboard after my 3GS.

Did Dell ever fix the problems with the Venue Pro?

How is web browsing on WP7, does it have real tabbed browsing and a good smooth experience with relatively fast load times (looking for faster than Safari on a 3GS, preferably as fast as Opera Mini)?

1. Yes, firmware update a few months ago.
2. Fast, it has 6 tabs (get metro browser if you need more), and it is really smooth, especially since the mango ie9 update.

Wish more local stores carried WP7 phones so I could try one out. Personal experience with MS Mobile OS is from WM6/6.5 which doesn't even count anymore.

I rather like the idea of a mobile equivalent of IE9 since it should provide good compatibility with most websites.

What I like most about IE9 is the fact that I can put the settings to desktop view and it will work in desktop view pretty much every time.

Does it have any kind of full-screen browsing (hiding most of the interface) and text-wrapping mode?

And from what I've seen WP7 can now do real multitasking, does that work with all phones?

Just tried facebook.com and it showed the desktop site, not the mobile one. Make sure you go into settings and manually set it to desktop mode.

1. No idea about text wrapping but the older version of ie on the phone had landscape full screen but people complained about not having an address bar so now the address bar is always at the bottom in both modes.

2. Yes it works on every phone, just hold down the back button to show the last 6 apps.

Welcome to the wp7 camp. If you have any questions just ask.

hey guys, i need help from the more knowledgeable users here. I have an htc hd7. I updated to Mango twice. Both times it messed up my phone.

The first time I updated it was okay for about a day until the battery got really low. I went to go charge it and after a few minutes it restarted and got stuck on the white HTC screen. I removed the battery and restarted. It erased all my stuff and it was just vanilla mango. So I rolled it back to my backup and updated it again. It was fine for a couple of days until it did the same thing. Now it won't go past the white HTC screen. I can get into bootloader mode (volume - and power button).

My phone has a crack so HTC won't repair it under warranty because their warranty is "all or nothing" repair. and obviously cracks aren't covered.

So what I want to do is is load up a ROM manually. Can anyone point me in the direction of instructions? My phone was never hacked or anything so it's starting from scratch. I've read about RSPL/HSPL but I don't know if that applies to me or even where to get the ROM or which one I should get. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks, guys.

Could be your SD Card reader is messed up.

I've seen this issue with a few dropped Android phones that have apps sideloaded with the SD card. The reader gets messed up due to physical damage. Android unexpectedly crashes and restarts.

That's one reason why Apple doesn't like SD Cards in the iPhone.

Note: I don't own an iPhone.

I had that issue before with my first hd7 actually. I thought that but when it cleared all my stuff it showed 14gbs of free space. Card reader problems will usually show only the internal memory. Plus it happened twice and both times were when I plugged it in on low battery after my mango upgrade

The Android phones that I've seen this issue (e.g. G1 with Apps2SD) all reported the memory available appropriately.

I only noticed the issue when I started transferring files to the SD. The SD card every time autodismounted. It then occurred to me that the something weird was going on with the SD card reader.

Could be related.

Maybe you're using a non-approved SD card? What kind of SD card is it?

As for manually loading, I found this XDA thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1254384

Cool thanks.

I've never changed my sd card. In the end I'm still in the same boat I guess because HTC won't honor my warranty with a cracked screen. If reloading a rom doesn't work I might open it up to make sure the card is secure.

If one is looking for an alternative to IE, I'd recommend surf cube over metro browser. More features, etc. It's pretty much the de facto by pro reviewers.

I'm beta testing the Mango update right now. Should be pretty awesome when done (actually I'm posting from it)

He (or you) may have unseated the card at some point.

Andy Lees talked about the future of WP.

As for why none of the Windows Phone models have either dual-core processors or support for faster LTE networks, Lees said that both are coming. On the dual-core front, he said that the current crop of Windows Phones should hold up well even against dual-core Android models.

“They’re all single core, but I suspect that they will be faster in usage than any dual-core phone that you put against it, and that’s the point,” Lees told AllThingsD in an interview last week. But, he insisted, Microsoft isn’t opposed to dual-core chips, but wanted to wait until the software was more ready to take advantage of multiple cores.

When it comes to LTE, Lees said that Microsoft and its partners wanted to wait until the faster networks could be supported in a less power-hungry way.

“The first LTE phones were big and big (users) of the battery, and I think it’s possible to do it in a way that is far more efficient, and that’s what we will be doing,” Lees said. LTE models are on the way, he said, but declined to say whether the first models would arrive this year or next.
Microsoft’s Windows Phone Boss Says Dual-Core, LTE Models Coming

And some stuff about retail and marketing.

Both Samsung and HTC Corp. have committed to increasing marketing budgets for the phones, said Andy Lees, president of Microsoft’s mobile unit, in an interview. While the manufacturers will determine how the money is spent, some of it will probably go toward spurring retail staff to tout Windows Phone models, he said. New handsets with the new Windows Phone 7.5 will go on sale in the coming weeks, Lees said.

...

Microsoft needs to do a better job of marketing the new software, which is much improved, said Michael Gartenberg, an analyst at Gartner Inc.

“From a technical perspective, it really does put them on par with the other competitors, but a lot of times Microsoft gets it right with the technology and then fumbles the marketing message,” he said. Mobile-phone retailers haven’t cooperated in the past, Gartenberg said. “If you went to store they showed you anything other than a Windows Phone. If you asked for a Windows Phone, they tried to talk you out of it.”

...

In addition to more aggressive marketing, Microsoft’s partnership with Nokia Oyj (NOK1V) will help sales, Lees said. Nokia announced earlier this year that it would base its handsets on Windows Phone software, a bid to reinvigorate its smartphone strategy. Nokia directly or indirectly controls more than 6,000 stores, Lees said.

...

Manufacturers plan to produce a Windows phone that uses the high-speed wireless technology known as long-term evolution, or LTE, in the “not-too-distant future,” Lees said. That will make mobile carriers more eager to promote the Windows Phone.

Cheaper models also will be produced, giving a boost to the operating system, Lees said. While handset makers and the carriers determine prices and subsidies, consumers should see Windows Phone devices for less than $100 in the U.S., he said.
Microsoft Phones to Get More Marketing Dollars

I think the last part is very important, because lets be honest, hardware-wise the phones aren't worth $200 w/contract or even €/$500-€/$600 unlocked.

NotTarts said:
Is there actually a reason why Windows Phones cost so much? Surely the hardware can't be the reason?

Carrier subsidies...

The iPhone may cost $500 to the carrier, but they will subsidise by $300.
A WP7 device may cost the carrier $400, but they may only subsidise by $200 on the same contract.

To the eyes of the consumer both phones cost the same: $200.

Meh, I think better high resolution displays and longer battery life are more important to consumers than dual core and lte
