I agree, I don't know why the heck Apple is the only one worrying about battery life. And then every time they do a consumer survey....BAM!!......battery life is what they care about most. The fact that I have to charge my phone everyday just sucks. I hate managing my phone like that. My wife's phone is always critically low because she forgets to plug in every day.

Also, I disagree about Windows Phone being expensive, on or off carrier subsidy (in the US). You can get the Focus for a penny or free on Amazon or AT&T on promotions they have at least monthly. You can get Windows Phones for $150 or less on Ebay. Those are tremendous values for what you are getting.

Not in the eyes of carriers and the marketing. LTE is the new hot thing for carriers to push some nice premium smartphone contracts and if Windows Phone can't offer it, why bother pushing it? Verizon should be one of them.

The Omnia 7 and HD7 had a MSRP of over €500 at launch. Same goes for the Titan, which is sold for £499 or €549 off contract. The Omnia W is even more expensive.

I'll agree.

Humans are superficial. Windows Phone is plenty slick enough visually, it just needs premium feeling devices to seal the deal.

another titan review which harps on and on about the 800x480 res. again, they don't talk about any poor screen quality or pixelization just bitch and moan and say how it needs a higher resolution just because.

if you read any of the 4.5" galaxy s2 reviews though, you'll never hear any reviewers asking for higher res. in fact, i've read reviews that never even mention the resolution of the galaxy s2's.
 
i still don't see nokia releasing the the N9 variant in the US. i think nokia will make a splash with a larger 4.3-4.5" screen phone.

Can it be that there are no cheap WP7 phones in Europe at the moment?

I bought my LG Optimus like two months ago for 160 Euros without contract (in Germany). Shortly after that there were also some great offers for the Omnia.

But if I look through ebay right now there are a lot less offers and the ones which are there cost a lot more. Most Optimus offers are > 200 Euros.

That makes it somewhat hard for me to evangelize WP7. Just in the last week two people have asked me about my phone and thought that the price I payed was very reasonable.

I must be the only one here who likes that. I mean...I like absolutely everything about that. Love the tag line, the multi-color tiles, and I've always loved how the N9 looks. 3.9" and all, if this was at my AT&T store right now, I'd drive over and buy it (I'm assuming it definitely has a FFC).

My biggest disappointment is that I can't buy any next gen phones. I can't for the life of me understand how MS allowed Apple to announce AND release the next iPhone before they could give us a new Windows Phone in the US. The Titan is out in the EU, the AT&T phones were announced weeks ago and still nothing. How many potential customers are they losing by being late.....AGAIN?
 
App Recommendation:

I'm looking for a good IM client for my Samsung Focus. I was using IM+, but since I've updated to Mango, it's been crashing my phone regularly. I thought this function was supposed to be integrated into the phone, but I only see facebook chat, which I avoid like the plague. Any recommendations? Are there any other apps that you guys think might be worth picking up?

You can't blame TIMN for that.

We found WVGA (800 x 480) inadequate for the screen size when reviewing the 4.5-inch Galaxy S II Epic 4G Touch and now that we’re looking at it on a 4.7-inch phone, it feels even more so.

Most sites, yes, but not them.
 
So I'm going to wait for the Nokia announcement at the end of the month, but so far I'm not terribly impressed with this batch of Mango phones - no sizzle. And I refuse to spend $500-600 for the announced models off contract given that the specs are so low, as I intend to use that phone for several years. Bottom line - I want it to at least be somewhat future proofed. Dual core, 1GB of RAM or bust.

With that in mind, I'm leaning towards grabbing one of the older models to use for a year or so. Amazon has an unlocked Dell Venue Pro for sub $200 from one vendor, but I'm concerned about the bands it supports. It appears that there is a single model that supports the ATT/T-Mobile bands (I'm a T-Mobile customer presently), but I can't be sure.

Does anyone know if there is indeed just one Venue Pro model? Or are there ATT and T-Mobile variants?

This seems to be common complain from most of the mobile website ... I am not sure why. The resolution on Windows Phone never bother me and it looks sharp compare to most Android junk all my co-workers are using. Only phone that looks "sharper" is the iPhone 4 display but their ui is ever so boring. Or it could be that amoled screen that make my phone looks so good.

Another harping point from all the Androids is the single core ... it's like they never actually used Windows Phone and just looks at the spec.

Why you guys think they look fake? I think it looks pretty good... very metro, and also retro looking. Tiles are nice touch and I think the phone look great certainly differ from most of the round edge slap we see a lot lately.

I said it before, and I will say it again... Microsoft just doesn't know how to hype, market consumer products. In the weeks following spectacular Mango launch and review, and the lackluster Apple announcement the top news we got for Windows Phone was the dead of Zune, and then the return to life of Zune and then dead again Zune. If it's not bad enough that Zune is already a laughing stock to most. If this is not incompetent then I don't know what is.

Their worst enemies are not Apple or Google, but it's their corporate mentality.

I can wait until next year/the next OS rev if needs be (Assuming the Nokia phones aren't up to snuff). Performance is good enough with the current units that I think I'd be perfectly happy with one of those.

There will not be dual-core Windows Phone this year. I am sure we will get one next year with Windows Phone 8.

As for Venue Pro, I am pretty sure there are At&t and T-mobile variants. Some band are not support for T-mobiles on At&t.

I just noticed that the coffee cream is shaped like darth vader's helmet with a skull inside. Kinda creepy.

Also, don't be bummed out about the Titan review, its still a very positive review. Here's my new favorite review line (and one which should be found on every WP7 review hereafter):

Yeah Andy Lees (WP7 head honcho) said we'll see dual core and LTE phones hitting later next year (probably fall?).

The reason for the dual core delay is getting the OS optimized. As for LTE, it's too power hungry. Right now it's a separate chipset and really hogs juice.

Both ST-Ericsson and Qualcomm are working on WP dual cores, and while I haven't been following the former, the latter's chipset looks awesome. 28nm, with LTE fully integrated in the SoC. It's expected to be one of the top phone chipsets available and put Qualcomm back in the race for high-end phone tech.





As for the Dell ... not sure what antenna it uses. Typically you can use any phone between the two but you lose 3G (Edge only) if it doesn't have the right frequencies. There may be some universal ones, but not sure if the Dell is one (kind of doubt it but you'd have to check).

Yeah, sadly, Mango doesn't support dual-core processors. I pray that this changes. I mean, it's clear that certain apps don't run very well on current Windows Phones, so I'd hope that a bump in specs is in order for the next batch of Windows Phones.

I believe it could be said that those apps are poorly optimized.. There are plenty that run very well.

Dual cores aren't going to save us from sloppy coding and poor optimization.

A big reason mango doesn't support dual core is because the underlying windows CE 6.x doesn't support multi-core processors. I'd be surprised if Windows Phone 8.x didn't offer dual core support.

Personally, I'd rather see a beefier gpu before they implement dual core SoCs if I had to choose.
 
The number of apps that don't support Mango/fast resume is extremely annoying. Seriously, is it really that hard? Mango developer tools have been out for months now.

Even Angry Birds doesn't support 60fps yet.

Don't forget NVIDIA bringing Tegra next year!

ST-Ericsson uses a ARM Cortex 9 and an Mali 400 GPU, so pretty much the same as the Samsung Exonys

I expect these Qualcomm's chips to be the entry point for the 8 devices.

Here's hoping for 720p screens and at least 32 GB of storage (honestly I'd be fine with 16 GB and a micro sd for additional media content storage).

This is like a Wii fan arguing that lazy developers don't push the system. No one on earth disagrees, but it's better to treat the symptom when you know the problem isn't going to change. Better hardware would lead to a better user experience for more people.

WP7 has a lot of momentum against it. Even if it was manifestly the best phone experience, people would still be hesitant to switch to it. Making it easier for them to say no by having the hardware lag behind everyone else's, or fucking up the subsidy / hardware pricing so that single-core WP7 phones cost the same as the Nexus Prime or iPhone 4S only serve to ensure that the platform is less successful and thus receives less support.

If some apps still have list scrolling problems after mango, it's very much the developer and not the hardware. I honestly can't see how the hardware is holding back the performance of apps. Are games held back by the GPU and the lack of native coding? Absolutely, but not the common apps. I find that really hard to believe.
