I think based on Robobandit's Focus S review, I have decided to go Titan. I already have a Focus so If Im going to upgrade may as well go all the way up to 4.7" :D

Yeah, I've decided to go with the Titan as well. The Focus S looks like a good device, but I actually like the screen on the Titan more, which I thought was going to be the advantage of the Focus S. The Titan also has the more study build quality, which I like.

I think the titan is just too big.. I liked my galaxy S II in terms of display and feel in the hand.. and the Focus S is that exactly but with WP 7.5 (and a different SoC)

I am a sucker for metal construction.. but I don't think I'd find the titan comfortable to hold.

I like the colors of the super amoled displays.. the reviewer over at wpcentral likes the super LCD better, but a lot of people won't feel that way.

If you're on the fence you may as well wait until both are available and do a side-by-side.

Yeah I'm not going to pull the trigger until I get both in my hands, but as of right now, its going to be the Titan unless I'm alarmed at the size when I hold it, which is a possibility of course.

It's also depend on pricing. I am sure on contract will be at least $199. Isn't there also rumor that it might come with beat audio version? (not that I want the overprice headphone).

You can get Focus S off contract if you are near Microsoft store in Seattle University Village. There's supposely a promotion where you can get 20 percent off any purchase over $500.00. And they have Focus S for $499.00 htere so you can get it for $399 off contract.

Is there an easy guide out there for this?

The dev unlock via reg edit is only possible with LG phones and the interop unlock is only necessary for pre-Mango homebrew apps, I think. I don't know if Schapman released a Mango version.

I am looking for replacement in ear headphone for my Focus, how would I know if they will be compatible? I need one that can control volume and pause music.

The one that came with my Focus finally bite the dust, as usual the wire shorted out where the volume controller is located.

Thank you, I have now succefully re-unlocked my LG!

To be honest this didn't really work out as I imagined it.

God knows how you'd access the app list.

I was wondering earlier if the supposed merger of Windows 8 and Windows Phone 8 would result in Windows Phone implementing the horizontal Windows 8 start menu instead of the vertical menu we have at the moment, and how it would look if that happened. I'm not sure how well it would work in reality.

You won't get the exact same UI on the phone anyway.

Speaking of Windows 8 Phone OS Series, MJ, from allaboutmicrosoft.com, wrote a nice post about the kernel situation.

As Berenson noted, Microsoft wouldn’t want to put Windows in its entirety inside a phone. Nor would the company necessarily want to dump all of the “Windows Phone OS” customized bits that currently layer on top of the kernel.

What the Softies instead are doing, some believe, is substituting Windows Embedded Compact for parts of “MinWin,” which is the detangled core Windows kernel/file system/networking stack code — also known by its shorthand as “Cutler’s NT.” (Cutler as in Dave Cutler, the father of Windows NT.)

Berenson — who was a Distinguished Engineer in Security and Identity at Microsoft and also a former Digital Equipment engineer — explained the impact MinWin has had on resource use in Windows:

“Windows CE has a reputation for being small and modular, Windows has a reputation for being big and bloated. But Windows itself is about 6 years into an effort to completely restructure and clean up the code base, its resource requirements have actually shrunk over the last two releases (Win7 and Win8), and Windows 8 is very much focused on the low power/constrained resources environment that characterize both tablet and phone devices.

“Indeed I am running the Windows 8 developer preview on a tablet that is less powerful and has no more memory than the current generation of smartphones and even at this early stage it is as responsive as those devices. In some regards, such as boot time, it is actually faster! So could a WinNTk-based Windows Phone 8 run well on a 1Ghz CPU with 512MB of RAM? Of course it could. What about 800Mhz? Almost certainly. 256MB? Well, now I start to wonder. It is pretty clear that Microsoft is focusing on enabling low-cost smartphones from Nokia and others as a key part of its strategy. The question is, what does a low-cost smartphone’s specs look like in the fall of 2012? And how big a target is RAM for cost reduction? And how much savings can you really get using Windows CE over WinNTk.”

In his post, Bernson detailed the cost-saving and compatibility reasons that moving to a MinWin/NT kernel makes sense for Microsoft. His arguments are all compelling. But just because it can be done, will it?

Berensone noted in his post that a number of the Windows Phone team are former Windows developers, engineers and managers. “There are definitely a lot of Microsoft people, both current and former, who want it (the switch to a MinWin/NT core) to happen,” he said.

(Berenson didn’t mention the work Microsoft Research has done to investigate replacing the Embedded Compact kernel with NT via a project codenamed “Menlo.” But I think the Menlo work adds even more fuel to the fire.)

I had been thinking that the fact that Windows 8 is unlikely to be released to manufacturing until mid-2012 made it unlikely Microsoft could take its core and deliver a new Windows Phone OS release based on it before the end of 2012. However, if Microsoft is using “only” the MinWin core — which is basically done and not changing with Windows 8 — perhaps a Windows Phone 8 “Apollo” release in the latter half of 2012 is still a realistic goal.

I asked Berenson whether he expected the change in kernels, if and when it happens, to disrupt users and developers much. His reply:

“Switching to the NT kernel should have no impact on existing WP7 applications as those apps have no direct access to Windows CE. This really should be a very seamless move for both applications and end-users. The ODMs (original design manufacturers) and carriers are really the only ones who have significant work to do since drivers or any other native mode software they wrote will need to be ported or rewritten. But things written with Silverlight/.NET/XNA should just work. I guess there might be a caveat for apps that use some esoteric feature that Microsoft decides to deprecate, but since most such features would only have been exposed in Mango I doubt Microsoft would have exposed them at all if they didn’t plan on carrying them over to WP8.”

He also said he wouldn’t be surprised to see the convergence of kernels result, over time, in WinRT (the new Windows 8 runtime) becoming the primary development model for both Windows PCs/tablets and phones.

Why not? Can't you renew/add a line? That's what we've always done.

How do you do this online? Whenever I try to upgrade my existing line on ATT's site, I never get the option to renew my contract, it just tries to charge me the full retail price for the phone.

I've never done it through AT&T. Did it once through Amazon, they have an option for it when you're picking out the phone. Rest of the time it was done at the store.

If you go to att site, and log in with your wireless account, it should tell you if you are eligible for upgrade. And from there it will ask you to pick iPhone but you can select choose other phone at the bottom.

Yeah, that's what I tried and it only gives me the option to buy at full retail :-\ Maybe I'll try my luck at a walk-in.

Anyone know when we're supposed to hear anything from the New York event today? Are there any live blogs for it and what time do they start at? I just need some Titan info. Held off on the Focus S so I could find out more about it today.

Been wondering the same thing.

Also, from the WindowsPhone blog as part of the post regarding the event today:

Meet our new phones

If you’ve been waiting to get a new Windows Phone, now’s the time. We have a great lineup hitting U.S. stores—all of which are capable of 4G speeds, have front- and rear-facing cameras, and come in a range of prices. Here’s the rundown:

•HTC Radar 4G: Crafted from a single piece of polished aluminum, the HTC Radar is the only white handset in the Windows Phone lineup. $99 after $50 mail-in rebate. Learn more.
•Samsung Focus S: Successor to the award-winning Samsung Focus, the Focus S features a brilliant 4.3” Super AMOLED Plus display—the brightest screen in the lineup—a thin 8.55-millimeter profile, and an 8-megapixel camera. $199. Learn more
•Samsung Focus Flash: The fast and lightweight Samsung Focus Flash features a 3.7” Super AMOLED screen and 5-megapixel camera. $49. Learn more
•HTC Titan: Coming soon from AT&T, the HTC Titan sports a 4.7” screen—the largest in the Windows Phone lineup—an ultra-thin 9.9-millimeter design, and an 8-megapixel camera with dual LED flash. $199.
As an added bonus, anyone who buys a phone also gets a free $25 prepaid card for shopping in the Windows Phone Marketplace, which now has more than 30,000 apps and games. So you can stock up on great apps right out of the box.

Is that true?

So no release date for the titan. That just sucks. "Soon"

Yeah, kinda crappy since they missed a pretty good opporunity to use the big NYC phone display to announce the release of another big display.

did the NYC event get any news coverage? even the tech sites ignored it yet talked about the damn nook tablet.

reminds me of Sega during the Dreamcast days, great product, Sega tried hard, but nobody gave a fuk.

most of the people at the event were probably there for the free slices of pizza.

Today, in New York City, Microsoft is undergoing what its internal documentation describes as a "PR stunt to support the push to retail" for Windows Phone 7.5 handsets. I'm in New York for the day, so I'll update this post over time with observations, photos, and other information.

It was an open house event, not a strict press event with a conference and all that jazz. Whatever was announced got coverage, but there was no need for a live blog or something like that.

Reviews went up, prices and dates were announced, Spotify was shown and MS got some attention for that big ass Windows Phone in NY.

Which release dates were announced? Every phone which got an announced date has already been released. The only one which we didn't know about going into today, is still listed as "soon".

Well, at least this time your avatar is pointing to the right person.

I would really like a notification bar the top or something. Mango may bring more tile functionality, but I dont want to scroll down to my apps to see whether or not Kik Messenger, for example, has a new IM notification. With Android, the notification(s) stay at the top until you touch them to dismiss them. When the UI allows you to add more tiles onto your home screen, inevitably you will not be able to see them all without scrolling down. With no notification centre visible at all times, it undermines the toast notification feature; something that is only useful if your phone is in your hand right at the moment you get the notification.

I doubt that is coming anytime soon or at all for that matter.

So I've been reading the wpcentral forums and people have been saying that there's lag with the Focus S. When I played with it the first time I never noticed it but when I played with it in comparison with the old Focus it was quite noticable. The UI doesn't respond instantly to touches and scrolls etc. There's a small delay. Now that I've seen it, I can't unsee it and it drives me nuts. There's also a delay with the keyboard. The keyboard on the old Focus was very fast and you could type as fast as you can press. The Focus S keyboard has a small delay which is noticable after you see it in comparsin to the S.

I wish I'd never tested them side by side but it's really strange considering the S is a better spec'd phone. I was about to buy it after work today but now I want to read more about it to see if this is something that's possibly fixable.
