zune / device / music find then copy any custom tones to collection

they need to add genres etc to device ffs

I feel like I should've just kept my Focus S instead of returning it for the sale. AT&T cancelled my order without telling me, and I had to spend an hour on the phone so they'd place it again. No idea when I'll get my phone, and I'm stuck using my old trusty Nexus One. Its definitely seen better days, :(

best instant messaging app? something that will continue to run in the background.
Also, looking for a good e-reader and audiobook player.

Not seen an ereader / audiobook player I'd consider good yet :-/

Depends on what IM you're after, if it's gtalk or aol its IM+ if it's cross phone personally I prefer KIK but whatsapp seems to be the in thing.

it's not a custom it's device specific. :( (I'm assuming since it was not on my Focus and it does not show up in Zune)

Put in my sim and it work, also show 4g. I like how I sign into my Live account and all my contacts and calendar just show up.

sweet! impressions... plz

also mine will be here tomorrow hopefully. I ordered a case on ebay which would have also arrived tomorrow but I used my damned checking account instead of my CC! dangit... (PP account was empty)

so pending clearing. Here's hoping I don't drop it until case arrives. :)

Are you guys upgrading or getting Windows Phones for your first time? If you're upgrading, are you actually paying a shitload of money to upgrade before your contract is up?

got my titan and I am totally impressed with this thing, its so smooth. Pinch to zoom works like butter, its even better than my galaxy S2. The screen is great 800x480 doesn't really bother me. Love the zune music player, such a beautiful design.

My only real complaints is that there is no native tumblr app, I bought tumblbee and it kinda blows. No crunchyroll app either but that might change early next year.

I'm in PHX :)

I wouldn;t be as excited if this beautiful Focus S didn't have some horrible sound issue with speakerphone use for the other person. I'm convinced it's the poor design of the speaker/mic

MS dictates that a wp7 ringtone must be...

No longer than 39 seconds of the songWMA or MP3. The ringtone can be either Windows Media Audio or MP3 format.

Unprotected. The ringtone must be free of DRM (digital rights management), so Zune Music Pass music will not work.

Size. The ringtone must be smaller than 1 MB (megabyte).

Set the Id3 genre tag to ringtone. (obviously you can do this manually)

Basically if you can get the tones off your current device and they adhere to ms rules there's not an issue moving the tones, if for some reason they break one of those rules you'll have to edit the tone with an app like audacity.

Why can't phones, in 2011 (almost 2012), simply select a music file on the phone and play it as a ringtone?

I know there are technical limitations, and I'm no operating system designer, but it just boggles my mind that this still isn't happening at this point.

I agree, it's a faffing pain in the neck! I swear it's not a technical limit as android and Symbian don't have this issue, rather an imposed one to make it easier to sell tones as the mass market CBA to edit a tone themselves.

I found the 1st gen dull and the Nokia too small lol

The first gen had the Omnia 7, which is still an awesome phone and could replace my Optimus 7 (kinda stupid, I know).

When someone showed me the Lumia, I was a bit disappointed. The phone is as big as my Optimus 7 and I hoped Nokia could pull off a sleeker design for a phone with a 3.7" screen.

For the two weeks I owned the phone, I never got a complaint when I used speakerphone on calls. It may just be the device you have, too bad I can't test it, but check xda and see if others are complaining about that.

Only thing I don't like about the Titan so far is that I wish the buttons were a little more pronounced. Maybe because it's new, but I find myself hunting for the volume buttons in my pocket when I need to turn my music up or down at work and it takes me a little to find it.

Same with the top button. Considering it's the only way to unlock the phone, I wish it stuck out from the phone a little more. Probably something I'll get used to though.

Besides that it seems like a really nice device. I'll be able to give a better impression once I orient myself with WinPhone better. One thing I am really impressed by though is that I can still type with one hand even though the screen is so much bigger than my 3gs. The phone really doesn't feel too big.

I don't want the Titan.
Or the Radar.
Or the Focus Flash/S.
Or the Lumia 800 (bigger than expected).

Everything's so boring this year. :(

Co-signed. The first generation had more diverse and interesting hardware, even though the Samsung Focus/Omnia ended being the most popular for a variety of reasons—not only because they were the best handsets (I'd still like to know if T-Mobile's WP7 lineup did better without the competition from the iPhone). Apparently the manufactures took a look at the Focus' good sales (relatively speaking) and decided candybar is the only way to go, giving us lazy knockoffs of their phones from other platforms. Nokia is offering Generation 1 hardware; LG and Dell didn't bother at all this year. This is the WP version of the 3G->3GS upgrade. It'd be a shame if it's standardized as the WP7 hardware cycle, given how far behind Microsoft already is.

It wouldn't be so much of a problem if the manufacturers had iterated on their phones from the last generation. As I said, they had good ideas which were poorly or inadequately executed. The phone I settled on is the Dell Venue Pro which according to one reviewer:
AnandTech said:
I'm going to put this one out there - of the current crop of Windows Phone 7 devices, the Venue Pro is my favorite...

If Dell can manage to slim it down and give it a dual core processor while maintaining the style and build quality for the next generation, they might have a real winner on their hands.

Instead Dell abandoned the phone and in the meanwhile Mango has reduced the efficacy of this particular phone in some ways. For example, typing with the hardware keyboard is a poorer experience in the new IE browser included with Mango. The menu bar is no longer shown when using the browser—yet that's where Dell stuck the icons indicating the current mode for the hardware keyboard. Coupled with the fact that the process of changing the modes wasn't ideal to begin with—you have to hold down the shift or fn keys for an indeterminate amount of time—makes tying a post on GAF unduly frustrating. It'd ridiculous that I prefer typing on my tiny Veer to typing on the DVP, even though DVP has obviously the better hardware keyboard.

If Dell still cared about the phone they could probably try fixing the UI with a software update. If Dell were working on a new model of the DVP they might have anticipated the problem and included indicator lights on the shift and fn keys (solid improvements regardless) and maybe even fit in arrow keys in there. I'm not asking for much; this is Pre 3/Blackberry Torch quality of hardware that I'm requesting. I'm very disappointed that no other manufacturer jumped into the void.

This is why I still use my Zune HD as my music player instead of my phone. The HD interface was much better for music where you can use gestures anywhere on the screen to control volume and track skipping.

I don't think it has anything to do with the Focus' sales and more the fact that candy bars are what an overwhelming majority of the market want. Windows Phones already sell in small numbers, if you're creating a phone that a minority of that minority wants then...

so far just by looking i can't seem to get over the fact that the titan doesn't have a flat back. that camera seems so out of place.

It does seem out of place, but honestly it's hardly even noticable. I'll throw a picture up tonight if I can, but the camera really only sticks out by like a millimeter. It sits flat and doesn't look that offputting in person.

i'd be afraid to put it down anywhere, thinking i might scratch the camera.
also are there any titan cases?

Nope got mine for a penny. I had an iPhone 4, but I wanted to try the windows phone devices so I got the Focus on Craigslist for $90 bucks. My phone is on a corporate account so they allowed me to upgrade for some reason.

I think this is because of the RIAA and various legal issues. (I think) they don't want to cut a deal with them for this crap.

That would make more sense to me if each manufacturer only released one new phone for Mango and settled on the candybar form factor. Yet each manufacturer released two new phones and all of them were candybars. Obviously the manufacturers know one of those models is going to get the minority of sales but mysteriously decided to not to tailor the model for a neglected segment or even experiment more. They can't differentiate much on software so why not continue with the various hardware offerings?

By the way, do you have any stats to back up your claim that "candybars are what an overwhelming majority of the market want". I'd wager that most of the top-of-line phones are candybars with few equivalent models in other form factors. I'd also wager that the sales of candybar phones is greatly skewered by the fact that's the only formfactor that Apple offers.

No, I don't have stats to back it up. The market has trending towards candy bar phones. Outside of Motorola's Droid, I can't think of another popular phone with a keyboard. If you look at the top smartphone OEMs, you have Apple (all candy bar), Samsung (almost all candy bar, even Sprint replaced their Epic 4G with an Epic Touch 4G), HTC (I can't think of a non-candy bar phone they have released in forever).

Well, and then there's RIM...

hey thanks

What they hear is a muddled reverb of their voice just slightly after they speak.

The ATT rep heard it when I called her and agreed to waive the restocking fee if I replace with titan. Otherwise I may just exchange device and see if that helps. It's perfectly clear without speakerphone. I was just imagining with the speaker so close to the mic it is a form of feedback, but good to know it is not on every device.

I tested it myself last night trying to isolate the issue. It seemed to help when I laid the phone speaker down on fabric. It may be vibration noise but I turned volume all the way down and still had it albeit slightly less.

The buttons and call quality seem to ne the main issues on Titan and could piss me off.

Why is it so hard for someone to make the Windows button the power up?

Also regarding controllable music playback. My Focus headphones allowed play pause volume and track skip from the wire. Don't know why Focus S does not support all those and will try titan to see if that works. Seems like it should be standard

Question.

I used my wifes upgrade for the Titan, do i Really need to call ATT and go through the hassle of explaining this to them or is just popping in my sim fine and dandy?

I loathe calling their customer service.
