Windows Phone 7 |OT|

BTW, It looks like the Lumia 800 is coming to O2 UK in December. I believe they were the last major hold out and didn't want to meet Nokia's terms. Hopefully the sales of the phone in the UK gave them a change or heart, or maybe Nokia got less strict on their terms.

No, I don't have stats to back it up. The market has trending towards candy bar phones. Outside of Motorola's Droid, I can't think of another popular phone with a keyboard. If you look at the top smartphone OEMs, you have Apple (all candy bar), Samsung (almost all candy bar, even Sprint replaced their Epic 4G with an Epic Touch 4G), HTC (I can't think of a non-candy bar phone they have released in forever).

Well, and then there's RIM...

I agree that the manufacturers have been trending towards candybar phones but that doesn't necessarily mean that customers are leading, or even following, the trend. The manufacturers could be making more candybar phones for many different reasons including: they are cheaper to make, and they dovetail nicely with another marketing ploy ("thinnest phone ever").

Personally I've been trending towards sliders which are, more often than not, the phones with hardware keyboards. When I got my first legit smartphone, the iPhone 3G, it could barely be called a computer. Now smartphones have the same screen resolution as the 13" Macbook Pro. During that span, the software input experience has barely changed. For all the swyping and penning, good hardware keyboards still offer the best experience. I do a lot more typing on my smartphone ranging from typing up multiple paragraph posts on GAF to making multiple page documents in Microsoft Office or iWork. When I pick up an iPhone in the future I'll chose to get a keyboard along with it.

Question.

I used my wifes upgrade for the Titan, do i Really need to call ATT and go through the hassle of explaining this to them or is just popping in my sim fine and dandy?

I loathe calling their customer service.

no big deal to them but you do need to be sure you activate 4G on your data plan (and change your wife's back) otherwise you will not be able to access data without WiFi. If you have a grandfathered unlimited plan (or any data plan) they will convert it to 4G no charge.

I did the same and had to call and fix it. The rep also told me to go to store and pick up a 4G sim card for my number if I wanted to take "full advantage" of the data speed but I do not know if that is true.

EDIT: UPDATE... by the way ATT will call you on the expected delivery day of your phone to be sure you got it and it is working, that would be the time to tell them you decided you would be using new phone isntead of wife and to set up the data plans and phone IMEI numbers correctly. should be fairly painless.

You know whats funny now.

My girlfriend has become an Android fanboy (Nexus S) but she constantly installs so much shit she makes the phone unstable (she's had to wipe to factory at least 4 times). Well last week it finally got to the point where it totally shot Best Buy couldn't do anything and it has to go back to Samsung.

After seeing how frustrated she was with her old backup Blackberry i paid for one of those unlock codes on eBay Sunday.

Yesterday after two days of use she's now torn between the two phones. LMAO. Windows Phone about to convert another one.

That would make more sense to me if each manufacturer only released one new phone for Mango and settled on the candybar form factor. Yet each manufacturer released two new phones and all of them were candybars. Obviously the manufacturers know one of those models is going to get the minority of sales but mysteriously decided to not to tailor the model for a neglected segment or even experiment more. They can't differentiate much on software so why not continue with the various hardware offerings?

They released multiple phones so that they would have models at multiple price ranges.

and? that still doesn't explain or justify why every model is a candybar.

Matthew Panzarino Reviews the Nokia Lumia 800 ★

Matthew Panzarino:

This device’s brilliance isn’t limited to the hardware either. Windows Phone Mango is really, really good. Nearly nothing about Microsoft’s OS works anything like iOS, while still feeling very fresh and accessible. It’s exactly the opposite of the way that Android normally feels, which is an uglier and slower version of iOS.

He really likes it, and says he’d switch from his iPhone if not for the dearth of high-quality third-party apps.

Jon Gold:

The flip side is I have to keep questioning myself and what I believe in. Cellphones should not prompt an existential crisis. It’s just a phone. But I keep having to ask myself whether I want Apple to win, or I want better to win. As a designer I hope I always go for better. Metro is undeniably gorgeous but I still can’t form an objective opinion about whether the phone as a whole is good enough to replace my iPhone.

The facts say it’s good enough. My heart says no.

I’ve been testing an HTC Titan for a few weeks, and that’s pretty much how I feel about Windows Phone 7 too.

They'll probably never switch but someone should start compiling and updating a nice comparison chart** of the best/most popular WP7 apps and their counterparts on other platforms. In my eyes, some of the WP7 third party apps already look better.

**there was one that Microsoft UI developers used to trot out. Anyone got a link?

I'm getting fed up waiting for Verizon Wireless to release the Galaxy Nexus, and said to myself, "Why not check out VZW's Windows Phones?" But then I checked out my options.

Is the Trophy seriously still the only available model? Is there any word of something bigger and better coming to Verizon soon?

There are nokia rumors.

There's some speculation that a Nokia Windows Phone (w/LTE) could hit Verizon in H1 2012, since some of their staff was at the Lumia 710/800 unveiling at Nokia World in London last month.

Ya know, that's a great idea. Not it.

The marketing for the Lumia is insane. I've seen more ads in the past few weeks than in the past year

So both Windows Phone OS and Android OS have flagship phones this year that are arguably the best devices they've ever put out for their respective platforms, and they aren't available in the US (the biggest market for consumer electronics) for the holiday shopping season (the biggest shopping season of the year)?

This seems rather silly to me.

i'd be afraid to put it down anywhere, thinking i might scratch the camera.
also are there any titan cases?

There are a lot of generics on eBay and Amazon. AT&T sells a couple of cases by case-mate. And there are some official HTC branded cases by expansys-usa. I got a generic one from eBay that came with a screen protector and car charger for $13 (mainly for the screen protector). Not sure just yet if I want to ultimately sport the Titan naked or protected just yet though.

DAT DROID HATE.

titan came...

quick impressions...

Do NOT compare side by side to focus S, turn off focus S and the titan will look great. Next to F/S it's no comparison, even on white screen, VIVID is the word on focus/S. the white on titan is definitely in the WARM spectrum red tint) where the focus is cool and appears brighter wherever there is white.

Once I turned F/S off titan is starting to look really good. but still less vivid in daylight. heh!

Call quality on speaker or handset are good! very please so far but more testing to do as phone calls are important as I run my business on this phone for the most part. I may swap the F/S for another and see if my speaker phone is a lemon or just get another titan for back up as the titan screen seems a little exposed.

I've read of scratching and such and the way the guts fit in the body it is a little sloppy but it's an interesting way to fir such abig screen in a small footprint, relatively.

Love the bigger real estate so far but will run it for two-three days and make a decision.

overall I like it

What do you want to know? you can turn it on and off, set your status and message people while keeping it all in the messaging hub, can make a vid if you are really interested
I guess basically if I can use it the way I use BBM now. Is it something that's just always on and it notifies you when someone messages you? Can you be signed into it and desktop Live Messenger at the same time and have it perfectly synced? If you reply to someone on your desktop is the notification still there on the phone?

For example when I had Live Messenger on my BlackBerry it would sign out often if I hit areas with no coverage which was kind of annoying. It want it to automatically sign in again and push any messages I missed through like BBM would.

Never used BBM so can't compare, but I can test the other bits...
Yes it allows you to sign in at multiple places, the desktop app shows that you're signed in on a phone and allows you to sign it out remotely.

I signed out of my phone and sent a message and signed back in and the message came through, I signed in on my laptop and phone and sent myself a message, it appeared in both locations.

I left my laptop signed in signed the phone out and sent another message it appeared on laptop but when I signed back in on phone it didn't come through I'd assume as it was considered delivered.

If you leave the phone as signed in it will auto reconnect after losing signal, hope this helps.

Some analysts said they were below expectations (estimated 500k by year end) other analysts said met expectations (estimated 2 mil by year end). Nokia said it was doing well. Probably won't know until Nokia releases its financials.

A reminder to all of you that just bought new Windows Phones:

https://windowsphone.promo.eprize.com/redemptionprogram/:b=ie9/

Free $25 gift card to the marketplace. Just a heads up though, you need to upload a copy of your sales receipt and a copy of the UPC on the side of the box to get the card, so you might as well have them ready.
Is this a limited time thing. ffs first phone to come to Canada I'll take it.

Edit:
This Windows Phone offer is good only in the 50 United States, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico.
You must purchase a Windows Phone device between November 2, 2011 and December 31, 2011 to qualify.
son of a fuge.

Question for your WP guru's, how easy it to unlock the tethering on Mango? I have to have tethering as an option and I was curious how it works on the newer version of the OS.

After a day with Titan here is some of my initial impression.

+ screen is lovely and I am getting used to the bigger tiles. I actually really do like the less saturated color.

+ phone is big but still fit nicely. It feel solid in hand and I will probably used it naked. The back is almost like having a case built in.

+ battery for some reason last me longer than the Focus.

+ good reception.

+ app run faster and smoother. Pulse used to lag and stutter a bit on my old Focus but not on the Titan.

Some of the stuff that bug me a bit.

- I do miss the deep black on the Amoled.

- the buttons are terrible. Probably worst thing about the Titan. It's hard to turn the phone on and the volume rocker just not very responsive at all.

- while phone is big, it doesn't feel big but if you have one of the thin phone like Focus, Focus S or any of the Galaxy II phone you will feel the weight after holding Titan for a while.

- sometime the screen lag a bit not sure why. On occasion it would take a bit to register. It could be that my one hand gesturing is all off because device is so much bigger. I will have to give it a few more day.

- viewing angle is not as good as my old Focus.

I don't think you can go wrong going with either the Focus S or Titan. They are both solid phone. Another thing I want to mention is how smooth it was to switch from my Focus to the Titan.

I will used it a few more days and give an impression. That said if this phone wasn't free, I think I would be perfectly happy with my old Focus.

Sooo.... I finally set up my Lumia 800 and it's working ok.

Any apps I should be considering? Not really too interested in games as I hardly have time for the ones I already have. I'd consider trying anything particularly good though.

Would really like a location based alarm / reminder app. I've tried one and it wasn't great. Don't know if there are any others out there. Also, probably need a jabber client, but the ratings on the ones I'm finding by searching are awful.

I've really been enjoying Windows Phone 7, but apps are getting to be an issue for me. I have no idea what's good, and I hate that a lot of the good games are Xbox Live enabled, therefore at least twice as expensive as they would otherwise be. And I don't have a clue about any good free or cheaper games on there. Seriously, even on Android, I didn't have a problem at all finding good cheap/free games. I've downloaded a few on WP7, but none good.

Awesome! Thanks! I guess one last thing is, if you have a conversation on your PC while logged in on your phone, do you have to clear the notifications on your phone afterwards? Just curious on it. Not a dealbreaker.

This should help smooth my transition when the Lumia 800/900 comes out here.

If your device and carrier support tethering then it will just work. I am not sure what you mean by unlock, there an option in the setting that turn on your Internet sharing and if your phone and carrier support it then you just turn it on.

You can unlock it as well, even if your carrier doesn't. On my Focus, I payed for the Chevron unlock token (because I never bothered to do it pre-NoDo and didn't feel like rolling back), then deployed an app from XDA and it enabled ICS (WiFi tethering).

feel the exact same way in my short time except the no case part and that I'd still probably pay for the large screen but free is a no brainer.

No he's on T-mo. I think in the US only new phones support tethering unless you unlock your phone.

If you have a Windows Phone 7 you are in for a treat!

I just ran an updated (literally 3 minutes ago) on my HTC HD7 and it now has Internet Sharing! It option wasn’t under the WIFI setup screen like I have seen in previous screen shots on the Microsoft site. Instead it is an option under Settings called Internet Sharing.

Saw this on another forum. I know it's supposed to be there, but I have all the updates I can "receive" and I don't have ICS.

Edit: :lol

No update was showing on my phone, but as soon as I connected it to my Mac, it was showing an update. Go figure!

Ah I stand corrected then. I guess only on the crappy AT&t where only 2nd Gen phones come with tethering option.

I also don't really like the buttons on the Titan. And I don't really like buttons on the top of a phone in general. I really liked the placement of the power button the Focus Flash, on the side of the phone where your thumb/index finger would be (depending on what hand you're holding it in). Flash also turned on the screen with the Windows button, Titan doesn't.

Kind of agree with that review that mentioned the antenna being in the phone "case" instead of being with the rest of the phone hardware. Might never cause any problems, who knows.

Those are my only gripes so far. It's big, but it's right on the line between just big enough and too big for me. Don't think I'd bite on anything bigger. And the battery life seems pretty good too.

Man, I'm glad I got over the app craze before I moved from iOS to this. I can't help but feel like there is a goldmine just waiting to be tapped while going through the marketplace. There WAS a lot of total crap on the iPhone app store, but there were also a handful of gems that were really fun to pick up now and again. This OS is so much prettier and flows so much better than the iPhone, so it's a really attractive platform, but it really is kind of lacking when it comes to apps.

I wish I knew how to program anything beyond input/outputting text and if/else statements, because I would start developing apps as of yesterday.
