Do you have a link to their 920 tariffs? I can't find these details. (Not that I'd leave O2, but I'd still like to give their tariffs a butchers).

UNLIMITED TEXTS EVERYONE!

edit: hah, look at all those windows phone tabs. angrily surfing the web for nokia 920 information.

It’s the effortlessness of the whole process that really appeals, plus I consider the overhaul of the Outlook website a real advantage for Microsoft. Together with the SkyDrive web interface, it gives the Redmond company two of the best examples of web apps done right: both looking and functioning beautifully. Just take a look at the not-yet-updated Hotmail Calendar to appreciate how much of a leap Microsoft’s web services have taken over the past summer.

Microsoft has, therefore, enhanced the Windows Phone ecosystem before it’s even brought WP8 out to the market. You can also be more optimistic about developer involvement in the future as the new operating system provides access to native development, DirectX, and easy porting of apps between WP8 and Windows 8. Now that Windows 8 is available at retail, those square UI tiles should gain widespread acceptance as well, as people start getting accustomed to the new PC operating system. Finally, Microsoft’s persistent effort to unify its mobile, desktop and home console offerings through the integration of services like Xbox Music and Skype should ensure WP8’s capabilities keep expanding over the coming months.

As I've currently got a Nokia simple phone (6700 classic), I might just get the O2 deal on the Lumia 800; phone is free @£26 per month for unlimited calls, unlimited texts and 1GB data.

Later next year, I'll see if I can pick up a 920 unlocked.

If you want a cheap Windows Phone the HTC 8S will be a better buy.

I looked at the apps on windows phone store online thing, and man it really is a sad state of affairs. I don't think the verge is wrong for slapping a 5 on it, which brings down scores a lot.

A 5 is generous. The only way they've managed to get some of the bigger apps is by making them or by money-hatting a third-party.

WP is still a distant third or fourth in developers minds. Of course, it doesn't help when you don't even release the fucking SDK.

A shame really, Can't wait to see how much these batches of phones cost in Canada.

Gonna dump my ip4 for one.

What were you looking for?
just looking around in general. It's very light.

there is that

Still considering trying something new this year. Owned android many a times, iphone many a times. Maybe for one year I'll give one of these new phones a go. Don't know though. Only reason I'm considering is because the lack of LTE in the nexus and because I want a break from iphone maybe.

In the year or so I've been using WP7, there's been 1 (ONE!) app that I've really been missing. I'm not gonna act as if the Marketplace is even remotely good, but some people act as if WP is unusable due to the app situation. It's not. 120.000 apps aren't all fart soundboards.

I think there is enough there, at least what you may need. If you are into the app stuff, which means trying lot's of useless things once and never touch them again, yeah, than the WP marketplace is not for you maybe (yet).

meh, I was just commenting in general. TBH I use my phone mostly to browse the web, text, email and the occasional game. I still own iOS device(s) for apps.

That HTC 8X is gorgeous, can't decide on either 920 or 8X.
8X! Support 4.3 inch phones so we get more.

Looks like an Android upgrade is in order.

I'll come back in two years and see if this platform still exists.

When is 7.8 coming out?

The fact we don't even have a clear answer for this is exactly the state of Windows Phone.

Disorganized.

Close.

The Verge:

Microsoft Windows Phone 8

7.9

GOOD STUFF
Home screen is the best on any mobile platform
Fast and fluid, just as Windows Phone has always been
Compelling, useful cloud strategy

BAD STUFF
App availability is still a concern
Stock mapping app isn't as good as hoped
Many annoyances from WP7 persist

0.1 too high.

Still true

Sigh.

You think it's "trashing" when it's a completely valid criticism that doesn't even come close to invalidating the product.

Frankly, they'd be better off without scores at all and letting the reviews stand on their own merit. People lose their minds if they see anything less than an "8" on their product du jour.

Oh ho ho, so I'm the fanboy?

The Verge/Topolsky has a bit of a history with Windows Phone. I don't think I ever minded the Lumia 900 review, but their flip-flopping sure was getting on my nerves. I've told this story few times already and I'll gladly tell it again, because to be it showed that their opinion means nothing.

Around the Windows Phone 7.5 launch, Joshua Topolsky said WP7.5 was "better than iOS 5", recognizing some of the big improvements, while still criticizing the flaws. Some time has passed and suddenly it was "at least on par with iOS 5" and a while later, it wasn't as good as iOS 5 anymore and always lagging behind iOS and Android in terms of development. iOS 5.1 and Android 4.0.x sure must've been revolutionary updates, while WP only got a smaller update or two in that time frame.

I really like the Verge and I like most of the people working there. It's the only tech blog I visit on a regular basis and the Vergecast is the only podcast I listen to. I think their editorials and stories are amazing and I love reading them in Flipboard on my iPad (which I'd never trade for an Android or Windows tablet).

But saying that everything is fine and dandy and unbiased is a bit of bullshit.

We're talking about the people that live blogged "Shut up and take my money" during the usual inspirational product video, on an event that showed a smaller iPad 2.

11:01:52 AM PDT
"When we decided to make the iPad mini, we wanted to keep the things that make the iPad so magical."
11:03:06 AM PDT
I feel myself having an irrational need to buy this product right now.

Shut up and take my money.

The Windows Phone ecosystem is in a terrible state, no matter what numbers they pull out of their ass and there's some serious shit going on in the OS, even in OS 8, but I can see how their constant "I wish this ran Android" is getting on some peoples nerves.

.

uhhh yea..

on W7.8 info... it is a clear example of the upgrade and shift to WP8 which is the "real" WP OS.

sucks for a while if on WP7 but the next phone upgrade will fix that for most people or in my GF's case, She will never notice the difference in WP7, 7.8 or 8.

At least for a long time... she loves WP

A company still needs to cater to old users, especially when they announced such an update earlier this year.

This is just another foul gesture.

valid criticism is only valid when its applied to all comparisions. To bring it up with one brand and not the others that suffer it removes the valid from the criticism.

How would he rate the ecosystem?

He's a fanboy like me, so probably a 9/10. He was using a 900.

I want to know how WP7 apps look on the 720p screen (black bars?) and if possible if apps compiled for WP8 eliminates this.

I don't think there are black bars, he would have said something.

Did he say he wishes it ran android? =p

How did he get an 8x?

He was at the WP event today.

Can't wait to get my hands on one.

Really think Nokia UK have messed up by allowing EE to price the 920 into oblivion.

I have spotted this deal for the 8X though that is really tempting. £26 per month, 100mins, 500texts, 1.5gb data for 24 months on tmobile.

Trouble is I'm already with tmobile so I doubt they'll make it easy to jump onto a new contract price.

Really liking Windows 8 and it makes me to jump on board with WP8, I just don't want to leave the iOS ecosystem since I have so many apps and magazine subscriptions.

I would suggest you stay where your at. I got 2 IOS devices dedicated for apps etc, but the phone situation is up for debate.

I really don't see why Microsoft even tries to fight the app war. They're better off not engaging on that front and focusing on the cohesiveness and personal nature of Windows Phone.

I am glad they talked about not designing the phone for everyone, but for you. They should have taken that angle with WP7, but it's probably best they didn't waste that marketing angle on that sacrificial lamb.

BTW, hey AT&T care to share when I can get a 920?

Yeah an example of the pricing

I really like many of the designchoices of WP. Like how you can resize tiles yourself, instead of all apps taking up the same space regardless of how much you use them, like on iOS.

But because they don't have the apps, I can't switch. So I hope they gain marketshare.

Because no one switches, fewer developers make apps. Catch 22.

What are some of the apps you really can't live without?
