No, it's definitely ruined forever. SHAFT set the bar too high, and even if we never see the deed depicted ever again, we'll still know that it could never be as great.

I haven't, unfortunately, but I'm familiar enough with Kojima's special brand of writing to be intrigued.
you've got a point here. what else could come close to...THAT?

It's pretty weird how well MGS3 turned out in retrospect.
The solution to this is clearly to use CG for everything so that we no longer have to worry about the jarring contrast between 2D and 3D. It did wonders for the believability of the otherworld in BRS!
This is a BAD idea.
Also using CG is no excuse for shitty spaceship design. the Bentenmaru looks pretty cool.
The airships in Last Exile were fucking awesome too.
Yeah other than the knifeships, the designs are reasonable. The Odette looked good too.

Not really. Many anime series might trend towards the exaggerated and the silly but I don't think that precludes logical posting in this thread.
Yeah they pretty much just need to vary it. I mean the knifeship itself is awesome, just...make something else too.

But computer generated imagery gives designers the same freedoms as traditional animation! I'd say lazy design has ruined spaceship design forever.

The whole episode was totally super terrible. The story and writing in this series is really amazing. It's like what would happen if Hideo Kojima was at the helm of an anime, and was given free reign to imagine a TV series based on that, complete with his most outrageous fanfiction take on where the direction of the story should go. Truly... amazing.
From what Duckroll said about the latest BRS episode and what I just watched Guilty Crown, it's like Hideo Kojima jacked Noitama hour for this week, wow.
The whole episode was totally super terrible. The story and writing in this series is really amazing. It's like what would happen if Hideo Kojima was at the helm of an anime, and was given free reign to imagine a TV series based on that, complete with his most outrageous fanfiction take on where the direction of the story should go. Truly... amazing.

She's clearly broken her leg at some horrible angle. It looks quite painful.
Well, I wasn't entirely being serious. Though I do think CGI space battles as they are typically used in anime are nearly always 100 times worse than traditionally drawn space battles.

I don't really see many good examples of CG space battles, so I'll have to agree with you on that point, maybe.
Speaking of deep, I just jumped into the world of black Rock Shooter. you are solely to blame for this.
The first episode wasnt that bad but Im starting to see the lolz.
I love the little derpfaces and the overall style of the show is moe as hell.
The action sequences really are pretty amazing. I'll keep watching this until my eyes and ears start bleeding.

I actually really liked that design.
Cant wait to see what else they come up with. Its at least a unique design and not just another big robot humanoid shape.
It looks good, but it still looks way to traditional-looking for nakamura, at least it isn't as ugly as [C] though.
And I don't mind it at all.
I've been thinking about this, and also CGI/hand-drawn aerial battles, since watching Honneamise and then The Princess and the Pilot. I think part of the problem is CGI giving animators too much freedom, as well as a decline in talent available.
The thing about old-school space/air battles, is you were forced to think carefully about every shot. If you wanted a new viewpoint you had to draw it. So, you would end up with either nice, hand-drawn animation, or a lovingly rendered still frame with a ton of details on it. But the point is, you had to put lots of work into it.
With CGI, now you can essentially just film your model from wherever, add some stock CGI explosions and cannon fire, and call it a day. Obviously there is nothing technically stopping someone from putting just as much work into this as in the old days, but the point is, they're not forced to, so they tend to do what's easier. And the new freedom to rotate things all over the place is highly overrated.
So much "hype" for this week's episode, I hope it can live "up" to expectations.

Maybe just that the show is as bad as people expected and they're revelling in the awful?
