The Light of El Cantare
its a pointless arc
but it has some funny stuff still

I just wasn't able to withstand
the announcer constantly repeating everything that was occurring on screen
. Anime and television in general are absolutely terrible at creating natural-sounding
sports commentary
, and this was no exception.

eh
the commentary by the spectators etc in Ippo actually adds to it

I like older anime a lot. I can hnnng at almost any era.
Cute is cute be it appearance or action.
But as said before, if something is good enough, I do not require it.

tbh
I find recent "cute" in modern anime to be insincere and obnoxious
old school artists ie. osamu tezuka, akira toriyama etc did it so much better

Sket Dance 48

Great end to a great arc. I was actually really impressed with how
Bossun and Tsubaki's conversation went. It was pretty easy to empathize with their choice of words when taking into account their personalities.
Usually it would be an extreme on either side of the spectrum, but it ended up being relatable.

I'm kind of conflicted on this arc as a whole. I think my opinion of Switch's back story kind of ruined this one because I expected it to play out in the same way. The difference between the two arcs is that Bossun's gives context to his actions while Switch's completely turns the character and everything we believed up to that point on its head.

It also felt like this arc was more about Bossun's father than him. That's cool and all, but I was looking for an event that would change my opinion of the character, something that's kind of hard to do when
the catalyst for a personality change has been dead since before the guy was born.

The arc also has more of a heartwarming outcome. Now heartwarming is good, but it's more of the same with this show even if it is a step above nearly every other story in the series with a heartwarming conclusion. What Switch's back story did not only changed the tone of the show, it retroactively removed some of the humor from previous episodes. It just caught me off guard in many ways. This arc, while adopting a different atmosphere, still in line with what is expected from Sket Dance. Again, not a bad thing, but I want to be shocked!

So anyway, I'm kind of disappointed the back stories are done with. Ever since Switch's back story, that's been one of my reasons for watching. I'm not gonna drop it or anything like that, but I do hope we get more arcs like that one.

I think Gunbuster is pretty damn good.

They're both six episodes, so it's a pretty low investment of time to watch both.

Not saying there aren't exceptions. A lot of it is just too literal and colorless, though. It's probably worse in anime that aren't actually sports genre but for whatever reason have some gimmick episode that takes place in a stadium/arena/etc. like
Davy Back Fight
in OP and that awful relay race episode of Idolm@ster.

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I would love to see a live action adaptation of Utena.

fantasy shounen is notoriously bad
they treat the audience like idiots (granted that a lot of them are children), and its almost like they are breaking the 4th wall to explain what just happened (even though it completely kills any pacing and tension)

Still, even if it wasn't at the same level as the TV or OVA series, it was a solid note for the franchise to go out on.

Not even acknowledging Flash huh? haha

Also I kind of enjoyed the music for 005 Conspiracy, the tracks were used fairly well within the context of the OVA. Though in retrospect I don't like it as much as I implied from my original post on 005 Conspiracy.

Look at all that hardcore sci-fi mecha action. Truly the Evangelion of our generation.

Pretty standard "foreigners misunderstand everything about their new culture" story. The comedy bits worked while the expository portions felt... expository. I would definitely watch a spin-off of Kiss' misadventures in Kamogawa as long as they kept the stupid invasion plot on the sidelines.

I left off on 7. Sadly a few other shows have been prioritized over this. Which is strange.

One Piece 3-6

I don't have a whole lot to say. It's competent, but nothing really stands out so far, with the exception of the lovely storybook-like background art. The OP contains the only notable animation (but it is really nice animation), and the direction is average to a bit above average. We're still in the character introduction stage, so the story is low-scale and the villains not particularly compelling.

Curiously Luffy's interactions with the dog in episode 6 did more to endear him to me than his own backstory. I had found him bordering on annoying up until then. I note that Shigeyasu Yamauchi directed this episode; while it's nowhere near the quality of his later work, it is a notch above the earlier episodes and fairly effective.

That's not really the same Dirty Pair, from what I understand.

There were a couple moments with effective sound direction, but the music itself didn't work.

I deserve this :(, but fuck you anyway for rubbing it in! You know, I felt pretty good about my description of the show at that time lol. I think I jinxed it cause after that its been 2-3 episodes without any mecha. I enjoy the comedy though so w.e.

hate to burst your bubble but
it's an 8 year timeskip. no teen pregnancy for us

Yeah but
that kid looks fairly old, you know she got pregnant just after highschool lol

I'll go back to it. It's just that right now I have to prioritize and its taking a backseat for a little bit.

yea but still
actually showing the how the characters would cope with a teen pregnancy and any possible social consequences >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> hinting at it!
if only ss+ wasn't limited to two episodes per arc. :(
the kid was pretty cute tho

Pocket Monsters Diamond and Pearl 161:
Pretty good start to the latest contest. Hikari's hilarious flashback provided some great laughs, but also showed why she's getting skittish around Plusle and Minun. Seeing Urara back is a real treat, and she quickly gets to work stirring up the pot, while Musashi just watches everything coming apart.

And then there was Musashi's great performance. That was unexpectedly creative on her part. I'm looking forward to seeing the finale.

That's a fair assessment of early One Piece, I feel. It's watchable (or readable) from the start, but the series takes a little while to really start picking up. I do agree about Luffy and ShuShu. That's one of my favorite bits from that super early stuff.

Did the dog being voiced blatantly by a human annoy you also?
I dunno why. Possibly the mental image of a girl barking into a microphone
