Some pretty heavy BL undertones that seem to crop up around the slightly older men. Always kind of feels weird but what can you do? Decent episode otherwise that doesn't particularly live up to the show's potential. I get that the mansion is supposed to be mazelike, but it isn't particularly exciting to watch people fumble around in a plain hallway for most of the episode, and the illusions of the castle weren't all that well handled.

Nyanko-sensei makes a pretty cool cat and all, but I'm going to miss him being in human form just for the mask. There's a point or two where he takes on strangely girlish qualities that seem out of character. I'm not sure if that's a side effect to his human form, lazy writing, or just doujin bait (which wouldn't be too surprising with some of the other stuff in this episode).

I wonder if there will be Natsume making out with Natsume doujins.

The yaoi elements have always been my least favorite part of Natsume, but if they get it to sell, eh.
I don't think I'd mind them as much if they were handled with any sort of subtlety. Natsume is a pretty laid back show for the most part, but when two characters lock eyes and the whole screen fuzzes over warmly it's pretty difficult for the show to maintain its typically mellow composure.

Plot's definitely picking up now, backstory gradually being revealed, things are getting exciting, I wonder what's going to happen-

Well, that sure was something.
Wasn't aware that "longsword duel in full armor" meant there was going to be a CG mecha fight out of nowhere.
And Eugenie's piano song appears to be the show's opening "We Were Lovers"... how interestingly meta.
At this point, I wonder if
anybody will get even a remotely happy end out of all this
.

Well,
it's pretty much the same thing anyway. Its just a layer of visual abstraction.

It's the best.

I am known to have a slight bias where Angel's Egg is concerned, though.

Even with bias that's quite a statement if you've seen GITS and Patlabor (unless it's sarcasm, not sure if serious...)

I haven't seen it and to be honest hadn't even heard of it till recently, so I just assumed it was a turkey. Might have to hunt down a copy myself now.

Maybe they were affronted because you didn't realize (at least, at the time) that it has a plot AND characters. Two of them, even!

It's probably more to do with the fact that I posted it at a pretty bad weak time of day for new threads where the requirement for posting in them is knowledge of Angel's Egg which, until recent developments here, was never really discussed.

Well that's one way to transform all the redundant cards, and poor Tomoyo the devastation on missing out on Cardcaptor Sakura in action only for the camera to run out of batteries when recording Sakura sleeping. :(

Well, obv. Most of your discrete anime threads seem to have bombed, though, regardless of subject & through no apparent fault of your own. I doubt GAF at large is interested in old-ass anime unconnected to any sort of nostalgia.

Anyway, the right way to promote Angel's Egg is to emphasize the importance of hair via picspam, as proven by said recent developments. This, clearly, is where you went wrong.

It's not too late.

Well, what I learnt after multiple failures is the best way to promote any old/obscure show is to talk about it right here, with the kind of folk who'd be interested in it. Oh, and I guess you have to have a reputation for not recommending shit.
I think the word you're looking for here is bisexual, unless he's also furry or something.

I know what I wrote.

I wanna go back to the future.

Are you disillusioned with "ordinary" magical girl shows in a post-Madoka world, or a post-Princess Tutu world, or what?

Pretear was at least a little bit different back then because:

i) Reverse harem
ii) Slightly older target audience

The second half of the series is much stronger than the opening, but I won't spoil you on it.

That first episode was average in every respect. Like, I could show it to somewhat that only knows anime by a glance and they would be "yup, that looks like anime". The character designs are awful, the dialogue is awful, the scripting is horrendous, the animation is bad, the music is boring. While I can certainly not make any fair judgments about the show now, I can say that the first episode was a drag because it feels incredibly derivative. You can tell that all these characters have been borrowed from other sources, and with Himeno in particular she is just another boy-in-despair-who-wants-to-find-acceptance-in-the-world that happens to be a girl.

WARNING - There's an anime podcast where people talk about Revolutionary Girl Utena for like, an hour and a half (I guess they go on to talk about Penguin Drum but who cares about that). You can get it right here (Spoilers within): The Speakeasy #025: The Flying Penguin, A Revolutionary Girl Utena & Mawaru Penguindrum Discussion

Now, I know what you're thinking. It's probably something along the lines of:

- Utena is a highly complex, multifaceted, multilayered text filled to the brim with symbolism. It's a pretty heavy work to discuss. It's not some run of the mill action show.

- Most anime bloggers/reviewers couldn't find a salient point or interesting thing to say about a show to save their life and that's when they have the luxury or spending as long as they want writing and drafting their posts - and that's when talking about your run of the mill anime.

- Podcasts tend to be a bunch of people talking off the cuff about whatever they feel like, usually without order or structure. This tends to be boring.

- This goes double for anime podcast.

In other words, there's a lot of barriers to this podcast being good. And yet it is. It somewhat helps matters that Clarissa from the AWO podcast guest stars and shares some of her extensive knowledge on the subject, but the regular hosts aren't slouches either, which is great because that stops the discussion being one sided.

The segment runs to over an hour and they discuss such varied matters as:

- Male and female roles

- Princes and Princesses (and witches)

- Akio being sexy

- Touga being sexy

- Anthy's motivations

- Pretty much everyone in the cast, mainly character interpretations

- The ending

- The movie

- Interpretations of Ohtori academy

- Ikuhara directing Star Driver (c'mon guys)

Etc.

Also, I'm an idiot for not getting the whole Akio thing earlier.
Akio=morning start=devil

Woo, just enough time for me to feel better about something after I mess up my piano performance in the morning.

Well, this seems great. Especially after my reactions to the Utena movie i'm now more than intrigued to hear this. Hopefully I can listen to it on my train ride home tonight.

Well, once you've duelled in the arena behind the school in search of that shining thing, that is! (do you have a creepily jealous sister that can be there?)

I'm actually more interested in Penguindrum discussion. Having spent many an hour on ohtori.nu in the 00s I'm not sure how many more theories I can absorb.

Hmm... I think I like Lan. Madoka seems annoying, though. Female Luffies are never my favorites.

Some nice sakuga this week, that was a well directed action sequence between Toriko and the president. The final bits with leg fork, leg knife and the other attack were pretty badass.

So much going on, and the events of
one year ago are finally revealed. Isako messed up the keyhole/passage, and the illegals took a number of children. There's still the event of 4 years ago left to figure out, as well as the purpose behind the keyhole.

Nekome appears to be the "villain" behind the occurances; Tamako as well, considering Mega-baa's remarks in past episodes. Both of them have a lot of explanations to do.

Shit got really real with that ending, damn cliffhangers.

Do the books ever mention that them and their ordeals are removed in such the way? (Open question)
Nope, it's a Shaft thing, as far as I can tell / remember. Not that they cut minor characters out or anything like that, but the world seems to be normally populated, in the novels. In fact, there's a part in a later book where
the characters realize something is wrong because it looks like everybody else has mysteriously disappeared, and I have to wonder how Shaft will handle that one!

they'll just
add people to the world, obviously.

No, they'll just draw no one. Not even the main cast. You'll just hear the voices, paired up with a succession of backgrounds.

Myke told me about Steins;Gate, watched a bunch of eps now. The ending of episode 9, the Akiba thing, was fucking amazing. Didn't expect this show to be this fun :)

I am sure there is a lot of interesting discussion to be had with Penguindrum.

However it wasn't as emotional compelling for me as Utena.
I felt pain watching episode 33.
What an unsettling scene. In context of the show and in itself.

So, is anyone still watching Guilty Crown, or did most people just bail?

I actually kind of like it somewhat more now, since
all of the characters' lives are going in a downward spiral.
