My favorite thing about bad Tomino anime is how there is always random stupid crap that no one else would put in an anime. Like this dumb-looking scooter:
Don't really like Maximilien and his hate for people who don't love their arranged fiance(e)'s. Poor Eugenie though I hope Albert reciprocates her feelings by the end of the series. I get the feeling that Franz is in love with Eugenie though I could be wrong.
I'm going to rotate between episodes of Arjuna, School Days, and Blood-C to keep me from going truly insane. The shorter stuff/OVAs will come after that.
Maaaaybe Glass Fleet if I'm not braindead by the end of this.
If it were any other anime thread, I'd never have done it, but soon comes the glorious return of Noitamina with both Watanabe and (hopefully non-[C]) Nakamura.
I can't remember if I mentioned this to you yet at any point in my novels, but the building in the penultimate scene in Ghost in the Shell (1) where Kusanagi fights the tank is also one big Angel's Egg reference - fish statues on top, fossils on the walls, dat evolutionary tree. I was like OMGWTFBBQ when I rewatched GitS recently and discovered this. Safe to say it blew my mind that he was dropping references to his obscure art movie from 10 years earlier into his most popular movie for which he gets mad auteur respeck knuckles from me. (It also apparently means that his entire filmography is made up of Angel's Egg spinoffs!)
Even by the standards of anime and manga that image is probably one of the most disturbing things I've ever seen... and yeah, some parts, like the repeatedly quoted part above, seem borderline physically impossible too.
That would be impossible, nothing as amazing as Garzey's Wing could possible be the worst anime ever!
It should be in the running for one of the most awesomely terrible dubs, but the anime as a whole is entertaining stuff. It's top-quality "so bad it's good" material -- and I would say that anything in that category would go well above "so bad it's awful" shows.
Oddly Eiken sounds like the most insurmountable challenge of anything posted thus far.
What a charming, fast-paced and all around nostalgic ride. I guess the series was originally planned to be 36 episodes long which resulted in it's very story driven nature. I said in the beginning that the characters weren't very intriguing, but I think in the end they each have a good standing in the story. Van especially-- he's really an apt hero for these types of shows. An archetype that doesn't carry the negative parts, too.
Anyway, if you're looking for a nostalgic adventure with good/pretty mech action, look no further than the The Vision of Escaflowne.
Yeah, Escaflowne is an incredible series, really one of my longtime favorites... there are a few things I could complain about a bit, but compared to the overall greatness of the show they're not important. Amazing show, and one of anime's great soundtracks as well.

Well, that was very fun to look at. It seems sort of odd to me that they took the retelling route for an Escaflowne movie. For a series that's lauded for it's ability to tell a good story, the narrative was easily the weakest part of the movie. Every plot point felt disjointed and awkwardly plugged together. It was sort of cool to see the different designs and reimagings for different characters though (notably Dilandau, pictured above, who
didn't turn out to be a chick like he was in the series, despite those luscious boy lips
.
It's sort of sucks that it was so awkwardly put together because it would have been a great entry point for anyone interested in Escaflowne. In the end, it serves more as just fanservice for people who'd already seen the series and didn't have to think too much about the characters who they're already partially acquainted with.
Really, the Escaflowne movie is a pretty bad movie, and in no way comes even close to the greatness of the TV series. It's really too bad that it was so disappointing, but it fails on just about all fronts in comparison to the TV show. There's nothing about it better than the show, and a whole lot that's significantly worse. Essentially it could have been something great, but ended up the opposite. Disappointing indeed.
Well, it's not really surprising that taking an entire story and cramming it one movie might turn out poorly. Approached properly, of course, such a thing is possible - but rarely is it executed well.
But that doesn't apply here, really -- the movie's an entirely different story, not a retelling of the film. There's no excuse for it being as bad as it is. I mean, you're right that trying to compress a series into a film often doesn't work, but that's not what they did.
Unfortunately, what they did do was something much worse than that.
At first I was able to laugh at how bad it was. Then it just became unbearable. By the end of the first episode I was beaten. I'm sorry for doubting how painful something this short could be. It's terrible in so many ways that there's wouldn't be much point in listing them.

Thats your only complaint???
I dont think any particular facet of that movie should be singled out and it should be dealt with as a single terrible entity

There's plenty of other problems, but that one in particular stands out as an example of what happens when you throw up your hands and don't even try to write a decent resolution to your plot.

That is what I call a great firs episode. It had space invaders, space-battles and a fine mecha fight. The introduction of the characters was fast but so good with some nice comedy elements.
And now after watching the first episode of Nadesico. I'm absolutely sure Rinne no Lagrange has the same light hearted feeling like Nadesico.

Yeah, an anime within Nadesico. A nice parody of the mecha genre of the 70s, although it's a little strange that Nadesico plays 15 years later a similar role.
But, I see, animeGAF is now in the shitty anime-mode.
