It's always good when a soul is saved from torment.

Hypocrite.

I rather have the impression that Nadesico is no longer an "essential" anime in the same way it seemed to be in the late 90s/early 00s. Much like shows like Ranma which were once required viewing for any anime fan, it's fallen out of recognition.

Animage's top anime ranking for 1998 placed it at third, above Utena, Princess Mononoke and Kenshin in terms of popularity. But Nadesico and Battle Athletes are hardly the titles they once were.

This, of course, happens all over the place. There will always be works that were extremely popular at the time which failed to have any kind of staying power within the community. I suppose the original Tenchi Muyo OVA would be another example.

Do you have something against the bestest OP of 2011?

I think that the problem is with more than just the OP.

It really was the best OP of 2011.

Actually, I lied. That honor would go to Nornir from Penguindrum, but Denpa Onna's is pretty damned close.

School Days is the Inception of anime
I don't even know what that's supposed to mean, but I'm pretty sure it's true
Many things are the Inception of anime: UY ep 78, UY movie 2, Miyuki-chan in Wonderland, and so on. However, I wouldn't say School Days is one of them.

But if you think about it, in school days you just keep going deeper into something that gets increasingly worse, it's just like Inception!

That 70's guitar is pretty enticing, but it can't surpass Erio's moe-ness.

Best OP of 2011? It's not Nornir or loldenpa, that's for sure.
Come Back to Me Boys >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Nornir >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> that fucking ending from the first half of the show that everyone loves but is overrated

The episodes were just too long. Needed to be cut down into Azazel-sized chunks.

Good ending though.

The
cosmic mindfuck mario kart orgy
mostly made up for the painful gag repetition.

aw hail naw

Guilty Crown 17

Despite the major developments in the episode, I find it hard to feel anything for the characters...
I mean Shu getting obviously what was coming for him and Arisa breaking down like that... meh. On another note I never noticed that Shu's power was on his right hand or was there ever a time he drew a void with his left hand?lol

Now to begin a third rewatch to see if
he ever uses his left hand, at least, in the op he never does

Speaking of UY, going through the list of episodes and here's some I remember being particularly Oshii or at least out of the ordinary: 40, 53, 71, 72(I think), 75, 78, 84

Not complete by any means.

Maybe if the whole thing had been just one continuous dance number. I can't possibly hold any anime OP that has a scene with the entire cast looking at the sky while standing on a cliff in good regards.

That's a rather particular bias you have there my friend. That whole part of the OP only lasts a few seconds anyway because the pace and editing of the whole thing is excellent.

It's like, when you open a box of chocolates and all the chocolates are pretty tasty except for that one at the corner that looks like poop and even smells like poop. I cannot enjoy the rest after that discovery.

Thanks for the heads up.

I wrote pretty much everything in that Angel's Egg thread off the top of my head. :$

I had to check the year Jin-Roh was released, though.

Speaking of this Angel's Egg podcast I finally got to the point where they actually, you know, discussed the films and it's symbolism.

One host mentions how he doesn't have too much to say about the symbolism and is more interested in it as a 'cool end of the world scenario'.

The other hos says that some of the symbolism is fairly clever, but complains about other pieces. In particular, he makes fun of the Man holding a cross, because if you have a cross in your film the symbolism is 'too overt' and 'lazy'. He suggests that Oshii was just randomly dumping symbolism in places because he had the some knowledge of Christianity.

He didn't even spot the ark.

LAGRANGE: Episode 04

It really feels like the show is hitting its stride now. I like how both Madoka's sister and teacher are take-chare women who don't put up with any crap. The meeting at the beginning with the Captain guy was funny.

Muginami is really getting on my nerves. It's at least obvious now that
the whole ditz thing is just an act, but sheesh.
I hope I get over this, since she's going to be a main pillar in the series. : |

Swim race! Lan in the raft cracked me up. Muginami is such a jerk, geez! Poor Lan...
So, the
memoria
are on the butt, boob, and crotch of our protagonists... Right. Okay. Sure.

Hey, they're actually maybe going to have archaeology stuff in the show with the archaeologist characters! Nice! Still, it's unfortunate they have to work with such incompetency. Can this base do anything right?! (whoops,
now the prisoner has escaped
) Yikes.

Lan being jealous of Muginami was freaking hysterical. I loved the poor attempt at her being sneaky in the restaurant, but the waitress bit was fantastic. Pouring the drinks on the table when she bowed and running into the pole got me good, hahahaha!
And she's going to live with Madoka (and Mugi...) and go to school now. Great!
I'm ashamed to say I just now picked up on the whole Lan/Wan thing they were doing. I wondered why she kept doing a dog's bark, but I was only thinking about the subtitles. Wonder how they'll do that when they do the english VO?

Well, things certainly seem to be going... somewhere in the space dude's side story.
That older guy needs to change pants, because I can't take a villain(?) seriously if he has chains printed on his pant legs.

Good stuff, good stuff.
Still love that opening. Man, it's addicting.

Also, Lan is definitely my favorite character of the show, now.

Trying to gather the will to watch the last two episodes of Guilty Crown. Trying.

Kill me Baby 07

Good episode, the mosquito skit had me laughing.

BRS 03
I'm enjoying the show so far.
Teenagers are assholes.
Not sure if Counselor is the big bad or not. Also, what was with BR shooting all the grown shadows?
Weekly yuri quota is filled.

InuxBoku 06

Emotionless girl episode. Show is entertaining, Rabbit guy is fast becoming a favorite comedic relief.

Rinne no LaGrange 06

Madoka being alpha as fuck.
I always thought Lan's Supervisor was disingenuous. Muginami back story explained next episode.

You just can't handle offkey singing moe~

Etsuko Yakushimaru isn't an off-key singer, though. She may be barely whispering when she sings, but she's not off-key.

The Nornir OP for Penguindrum was certainly my favourite of the year. It was intriguingly storyboarded, nicely animated, the song itself is both interesting and also relevant to the show... all round good stuff.

Now Blood-C's OP was impeccably animated, but it just wasn't quite as quirky as Nornir was. And having just watched the second Idolmaster OP that Jex mentioned (not my kind of show so never really watched it) it is again very well animated - but I don't like idol-style songs so the overall package leaves me cold.
