It was good and all but, with the quantity of work and people (key animators) necessary to achieve that only for various scenes of one episode... wouldn't that diminish the returns from working with that kind of animation in the first place? It would serve as an exercise to improve on it, after all, but... isn't it a bit pointless as they seemed to be trying something similar to how the previous OVA's action scenes were made but in another (more convoluted) way?

3D animators capable of pulling off nice looking animation in CG are easier to find and hire now than 2D animators capable of pulling off animation of the same quality in 2D. Production-wise it is also faster to have 10-15 guys working on a CG sequence than to wait for 1-2 key animators of traditional animation to animate the same scene.

They also announced(?) Nakamura's next noitaminA show.

The studio is A-1, its about 4 dudes (somewhat like Nichibros) and it looks slice of life by the sea. The title is Tsuritama.

Hah, I thought I was mad thinking it was THAT kind of 釣り!

Further info that some people might care about:

The music for the show is by the Kuricorder Quartet, mostly known for the music for Pythagoras Switch but also for anime like Azumanga Daioh and Oku-sama wa Mahou Shoujo. So expect lots of twee, weird recorder music in the background of this one.
As a concerto-standard recorder player I approve of this development.

I love the look of the show - but I haven't watched the trailer with sound on yet (I'm at work!) so can't judge what the actual content might be like...

Trailers for the Anime Bunko OVAs (Naoko-san, Minori Scramble and Gyo), animated by ufotable. Naoko-san and Minori Scramble look well made but Gyo looks kind of bad (look at the CG fishs!), which is a pity since it was the most interesting of the three projects.

Sign me up for CG invasion :D (the one with the fishs)

Theres nothing more horrifying then CG in anime so it's a good fit.

penguin show o_O gaf shouldn't let cajun see this, it might end his life.

The later half of that pv looks like a remake of the first pokemon episode with ash raceing to take pikachu the pokemon center.

There's something these pervs told me about called Dulce Report which is apparently instructive in this area?

But the point is that the BRS OVA really isn't yuri, or shoujo-ai, in disguise. I have secret insider knowledge of female friendships that allows me to understand this.

Much like BRS, Dulce Report is also all about friendship.

Your first point is undeniable, really. For the second one I have one doubt; with the focus put in making a thoughtful use of key-framing to make stand out poses and a more conscious movement, I suppose the gap of time spent (man-hours) working between the two types of animation processes should be at least close enough to compare them on a shot-by-shot basis, no?

I'm not sure if on this production each one of the 'computer-graphics model animators' (a big number of them present on this episode, much resources) work individually on a scene or in groups. Was this shown on the NHK WORLD report? I need to check it later and inform me more on this subject...

You should share your wisdom, sage.

Black Rock Shooter Ep1

I watched it. Overall, as a big fan of the OVA I'm not very happy with how they remade the majority of the scenes so far. There's definitely potential for a more interesting story, but what they've done here is basically take the first 1/3 of the OVA and added more stuff to it, while weakening the scenes they remade. The new stuff is interesting and effectively directed, especially the scene in Yomi's house.

The problem would be the scenes which already existed in the OVA which I felt were a lot less powerful here and it seemed like they just wanted to get those scenes over with, since people had seen them before already. The scene where Mato and Yomi exchange names in ep1 is really badly presented compared to the OVA, and the supposedly "emotional" scene near the end did nothing at all for me.

The action was pretty well directed on the other hand, and there's a very interesting contrast in style between the real world and the fantasy world now. Much more so than the OVA. In the OVA, you could tell one person was directing all the scenes, so even the "action" scenes were moody and filled with the same sort of atmosphere as the real world drama scenes. That worked for the OVA, but they're clearly going for something totally different here. With Imaishi directing all the fantasy world segments, it totally feels like two shows in one.

I'll definitely be watching ep2, but I'm not that impressed with ep1, and I blame Mari Okada for it! Hopefully they'll be able to cover all the OVA story material within the first 2-3 episodes, and then move on to totally original stuff which should be more interesting for the Ordet stuff. I think the director is being lazy with regards to scenes he has to direct "again" and he isn't putting his all into it yet.

P.S. zeroshiki is wrong. There are a grand total of 6 minutes worth of fantasy world footage in ep1, out of a total of 21 minutes 30 seconds of animation. That's almost 1/3 of the episode!

If I had to guess, I'd say the episode was about 20% more ship-teasy than the corresponding chapters, though some of that feeling might just be from seeing it animated and/or Ryōko Shiraishi's performance vs. still panels on a comic page.

I can't wait for the
swap episode.

I don't want to hear this.

Tsuritama's official site is open for business, PV included.

Staff
Writer: Toshiya Ono (Suite Precure)
Character Designer: Atsuya Uki (Cencorool)
Chief Animation Director: Yuichi Takahashi (Macross Frontier)

So nakamura is ACTUALLY making the equivalent to Anohana next season!

Staff is worse than the staff of [C] but the art direction and premise looks a hell of a lot more interesting so who knows.:o

Sket Dance 43

Is it just me, or was this better produced than most episodes? Some interesting visuals going on in a few spots.

Cute episode with some clear ship teasing going on. Definitely makes me want to root for those 2 getting together.

Which two? I haven't watched any of it in about two months but this may encourage me to catch up somehow.

I'm sorry to have to be one the break it to you, but all of your girl friends you thought were straight... well, they weren't. Many hearts crushed by your obliviousness. :(

Can't help it that I'm a broken shell of a person.
Sailor Moon R movie was gud. Was that Toei?

I tend to think of their classic back catalogue. Sally the With, Hols Prince of the Sun/Little Norse Prince, Puss in Boots, Animal Treasure Island, Taro the Dragon Boy and Crying Freeman. But that's just me, I'm sick in the head.

[Natsume Season IV - 5]

natsumeS45.png

Another really strong episode for this fourth season of Natsume. As with the previous couple of episodes, the production and direction are once again on par with the original season. The most impressive aspect of all this is that this very story has been told on the show two times already, there's very little fresh about the 'core' of it. The difference is all in the presentation and the angle they took with this episode.

Visually, the colours were rich and vibrant and the detail on the characters was slightly above average - I especially liked the minor attention to detail with regard to the Youkai's mouth. The tennis ball is never mentioned or drawn attention to at any point, which is great.

The cinematography was good as well - nothing very impressive or creative but it didn't need to be, it was just solid. The editing was the generally pretty slick, with the Youkai having some fairly cool transitions between scenes. Of course, the thing that really kept this episode 'fresh' was the switch in perspectives - exploring the same story from a different angle can get messed up if the tone is wrong or the alternate perspective feels disjointed, but here it felt like two halves of the same whole and the characters resonated with each other even when as though they were separated.

Incidentally this is why I was so harsh on season three, well, I was also harsh because it was cheap and forgettable, but you can see how much better the show is at the moment. I actually felt somewhat connected to the characters emotionally, which is fairly impressive.
