Another 04:

I think I'm going to drop this one. Nothing against it, it's extremely well-made and I like the artwork and animation. But it seems like it's basically Final Destination the anime, and I hated Final Destination. :-/

Yuri is the best kind of friendship, you know it to be true.

You are a cruel cruel person for not warning mentioning the 3 minute transformation stock footage and the 3 minute special attack stock footage every episode.

Granted they cut it short later... to accomodate adding more Precure's transforming and attacking.

Believe me, I have no problem with stock footage. Sailor Moon was my gateway drug; I racked up a £100 phone bill in my youth by spending too long on dial-up downloading Realvideos and MPEGs of the transformation and attack sequences for all the senshi. I watched about 13 episodes of Shugo Chara purely for the transformation sequences.

Basically, I can handle it, but I'd like the show surrounding the stock footage to be entertaining as well :p

[Crayon Shin Chan: The Storm Is Calling -The Adult Empire Strikes Back!]
Excellent (as usual) write-up, Jexhius! But I think that you would have definitely enjoyed a work like this even more having seen at least part of the series. Moments of everyday, non-exaggerated familiar and sentimental brilliance permeates it, but, well... it is not as focused on it as some of the movies, of course (although it was more like that on the first episodes of it). For example, seeing and knowing how miserable life is regularly for typical salary-man Hiroshi (as an habitual funny premise), with so little but simple rewards for it, and how he is at the same time genuinely convinced of his position as a protective but sometimes powerless head of family makes scenes like the one referenced by Dresden a really gut-wrenching moment:

Anyone who doesn't shed a tear during the
stinky shoe-sniffing scene
has no heart. No heart, I tell you.
And coupled with this music for maximum effect:

Also, mainly thanks to Shinnosuke's popularity it has been easier for everyone on this country to access more easily (in decent enough editions as well) not only many of Shin-chan's movies but some of Keiichi Hara's later works like Summer Days with Coo and the mentioned Colorful. I'm grateful to such a good series for that as well!

And I haven't watched Colorful yet, but think I really need to!

Is Heartcatch actually worth watching? I've always found PreCure a bit disappointing for some reason; maybe I'm a bit old-at-heart and non-demographic for young-skewing magical girl shows these days, and although Heartcatch certainly looked appealing I didn't know if it was a good series beyond the artstyle.

The Heartcatch movie is super-fun - I mean, it's absurdly good for something that should have, by all means, been pretty terrible.

The TV show is, overall, all right. It has some pretty high highs, but as with most of these things, at forty-nine episodes it overstays its welcome at times. It's a little better than (what I saw of) Suite Precure in that regard in that it's way heavier on guest characters, and it plays pretty loose and wacky with a lot of them (if nothing else, you can't accuse Heartcatch of being short on character).

It's also the only Precure series I've managed to make it all the way through, which I guess also counts for something. It's still very much a Precure show, though, so if you don't like your magical girl shows with a side-order of DBZ hyper-kinetic fighting, it's probably not for you.

Can I make a confession? I'm only watching this show for Madoka and Lan. I don't give a shit about the rest of the story or characters because frankly they're kind of dull. Well, the animation is very good, I'll give it that too. But mainly, I'm just watching for them.

Shallow? Yes, I fully admit it. But I have the perfect counter for this.

MARU!

:-P

Well it is trivial.

Its not trivial. what else will I use all the money that I get from working on?

Yeah but how else am I supposed to waste it?

precisely.

I hope after enough people finally finish School Days they get around to Texhnolyze.

I couldnt get into it. Its too bizarre for me.

We're ALL watching it for Maru and Wan. They are the reason for its being. Certainly not that tramp Mugi.

Suite Precure 48:
Watching the denouement without any context is probably not the right way to watch a show, but I figure I should just see what they do. This looks about right.

This was what I was going to watch anyway, just to see what they were going to do with it. I feel like they're going to run out of symbols for the girls to personify. Flowers, music, books... the next series might have to be about fashion or something equally pedantically feminine. :p

What actually caught me by surprise was how Sailor Moon this show is. The main character is basically Usagi 2.0:
wqf9ql.jpg

Ditzy, loud, and always running away. As a result, the show also feels tonally different from the last two series - rather than have some major world changing conflict happen in the background with some angst between the main characters, you just get Usagi 2.0 falling into her role as a Precure.

And you know, I've said how I was impressed by the extremely feminine and heteronormative transformations in Heartcatch Precure, but I think they found a way to make the transforms even more girly:
vUujul.jpg

Her "device" is a compact and she has to put on blush! If this was an American cartoon, I could already imagine the angry feminist response. lol

But, hey, at least she doesn't have to throw her tiara around in order to kill enemies:

Maybe it's because Sailor Moon is on my mind, but I might actually continue watching this show. The fact that all the Smile Precure girls are almost like their Sailor Senshi counterparts (for example, the green haired girl seems to be a jock) probably doesn't hurt either.

I'm just throwing it out there for mental preperation.

Also there's something about the stock footage that makes me want to skip it all the time, ironically I used to hate stock footage full stop, yet I never once skipped Utena, Penguin Drum or Sailormoon's (although the urges were very strong during SuperS).

I hope after enough people finally finish School Days they get around to Texhnolyze.

Texhnowut!?

Fashion would be a bit weird given that Heartcatch was pretty much as much about that as it was about Flowers.

It seems as if the show is proving it can do well at almsot any genre. Mecha, Slice of Life, and now character Drama.

Lan was totally stealing the spotlight, until Madoka went alpha on Muginami. It still seems like we're not getting the full truth, Vill doesn't seem the big bad he should be. He obviously ditched Muginami so she wouldn't have to choose between him and Madoka.

This looks cute as fuck.

That reminds me. I actually haven't watched all of Nanoha/Nanoha A's yet. Should probably get on that too. So much anime, so little time to enjoy it. Story of my life.

I don't really remember much about it, but I never really thought of Texhnolyze as a trap series like School Days. Could be wrong though.

Part of the problem is that some people won't understand the show or be able to make it to the end. It's a lot more slow paced than something like School Days.

They haven't done cooking yet, have they? ;)

Japan's a little bit behind on the feminist movement. Not that America is really that far ahead. >_>

If they do cooking, then they might as well do cleaning as well and call it Maid/Homemaker Precure. lol

Well, to be fair, I figure MLP is pretty heteronormative as well. I just wonder if there are women in Japan who complain about Precure the same way that women here complain about Barbie.

From what I've seen of MLP, which isn't much, it seems fairly progressive.

Damn, this was a good setup episode.
Villaguilo was pretty cool, and Muginami getting owned was great, as was Madoka being alpha as fuck this episode all over the place. I wonder more about Lan's brother now and more of the space empires motives and such behind their war. I would never want Madoka mad at me.
Things are progressing at a decent rate, and lots of details are being filled nicely. The only thing I would want more of is some backstory on everyone. Everyone only has some shallow portraits of them filled in so far, but with any luck they'll be fleshed out soon enough (and I think it will happen given what we've seen so far on both Lan and Muginami. Also I wonder what happened to Madoka's parents). This show is still really pretty, and i've never seen so subtle a panty shot in my life.

I also like how on Lan's hair-bow at the beginning was a bud, but when she's older she dons a bloomed flower. Also HHHHHHHNNNNNNNNNGGGGGGGGGGHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Nice conclusion, the interview part really psyched me up. This anime could really be one of my favorite long running if they actually did some battle arcs. 18 episodes and no true fights is leaving me hungry for so much. I want to see a Killua one, Killua v anyone would be cool, well not Gon, but still.

Can you post the source?
