Don't shows in that timeslot usually sell around that amount regardless of quality?

Yup, I think its just not living up to max potential.. Ao Ex still a lot more successful.

Its reflected to manga sales boost, Magi's anime only make the manga sell around 400-500k, Ao Ex anime make it to 700-900k.

Shogakukan will be happy regardless.

good to see Jojo doing well. that show is so fun and cool. the amount of material available should provide a decade of good entertainment.

Fall 2012 is definitely a pretty successful season commercially. We're looking at about 11 new series which are doing better than average, with 8 of them above 10k (which is supposedly the "definitely profitable" mark according to the Ufotable president). I would say it's impressive.

I think its more like ordinary people buying.. also mean the number gonna drop big in each releases.

ao no exorcist had a big drop from volume 1, i expect the same for Magi. Still good enough to get a sequel though probably, hopefully they change director and writer.

Magi's release is weird though. Vol2 will be out in 2 weeks, not in a month. It's also the same lower priced release as Vol1, with only 2 episodes as well. Regular pricing only starts with Vol3, so we'll see.

Yeah, things like discount pricing and event tickets and so forth can skew what would be the "normal" sales of a series, so to speak, but that's what the total per-volume averages in the end are for.

You have the quote?

It was some comments he made on a Nico streaming program about some other shit. I can't remember what the exact context was, but basically he said that people on the internet tend to believe that 6-8k sales are "good" for anime, but in fact if they're only taking into account home video sales, 6-8k in the short term is a financial loss. I remember he said that for shows to actually be considered profitable they have to sell over 10k.

Makes the miracle of Kami Nomi Season 3 even more miraculous!

Thank you!

He might be right, but there's only so much you can know from Oricon tracking data.. Some people saying the actual sales can 20-30%+ from Oricon data, and plus the long term sales which impossible to track.

For example SHAFT already reporting their Monogatari series already hit 1 million mark, we can only identify 800k of them from Oricon, KyoAni said something similar about Haruhi, Nodame producer said they selling 3x more than 2ch's estimate and so on.

Shaft is hitting some new highs in bad art and cut corners here. Wonzoic faces are aplenty. There's even a whole crowd of them. Then they stop having faces at all and it's deep.

I liked the start of the episode, at least--you can do some interesting things with the idea of constant surveillance, of the surveillant being surveilled, the doubly voyeuristic nature of the voyeur being voyeured. Not that it ever does much with it.

Of course it quickly falls apart under the weight of its own mythos, which it so laboriously imparted on the viewer last episode. It exists in that odd limbo where things are stupid and random, but they're supposed to make sense within the context of the story, and when they try to explain that logic, everything falls apart.

This show is garbage.

Probably what they shipped since I don't see the anime industry acting any different from the gaming. Lol @ Harada claiming Tekken 6 sold 3.5 million on twitter when that shit flopped period.

What sources of revenue are there besides home video sales? You have the blurays, dvds, merchandise... anything else?

Advertising, overseas rights, domestic streaming/VoD, events.

It's also to note that different "lines" are drawn at different levels; something lowball like the Manabi line is taking into account all of these, assuming unrecorded sales, and assuming a hypothetical bump for the core IP. Whereas the figures in question he's talking about are what it takes to literally break even on home video, that is, the kind of sales that would make a hypothetical zero-merch, Japan-only, TV-budget OVA break even.

Maturity, bitches.
And for all I know, they're just Lego's here, I just wanted to crack a stupid joke only someone like BGBW would get. And yeah, N&B originally stood for Nintendo Block.

And they're more 'if we put circles on rectangles they look a bit like Lego but it isn't' blocks.

School Days 1 - 2

Somebody told me to check this out. Not a lot to say, pretty standard setting and characters...Not a huge fan of the way it looks, and the formula seems pretty generic, but I guess it won't hurt to watch a few more.

Let's take K-On as an example. Here's a screencap of a news variety show BEFORE the K-On movie.

It says K-On and related goods have sold 28 billion yen.

Now, what we know of K-On's sales is from reports around when the last K-On!! volume came out and it said the K-On series has sold 540k units. Now, assuming 8800 yen per disc (because why not) that only comes out to 4.75 billion yen. There was like a 20 billion yen goldmine in merchandising.

BGBW

Maturity, bitches.
I don't think I've ever watched anime while drunk.

Now I'm wondering if I should try it out.
Neither have I, but I don't drink excessively at home. I think the closest I got to that was when I start using the word cheeky bit more than usual.

If I am tipsy it usually means I'll just go to bed once I get home.

Well, I hope you like your hour long OVA's to be as fucking ugly and poorly animated as the 9th one was as that's exactly what you're gonna get, shit end and all.

If that is K-ON alone, I wonder how much the Precure series has made on merchandising?

EDIT: Wishing for a game of this calibre...
