I was trying to remember if I ever liked any show that Gonzo has worked on and after looking at their works on wiki, not really. The only one I did, was more inspite of Gonzo rather than because of them. God damn did they work on some stinkers.

Oh man I love Gonzo!

Im not listing them again because you guys know which.
Its a lot.

For the immersion discussion, I think it can be a good quality, but it's not a necessary one. The same is true for anything else. There are works that are enjoyable because they transport you to another time and place, and there are works that are good because they challenge you or keep you off-balance. Both techniques have their uses.

It's not necessarily bad if a show breaks immersion, as long as there's a reason. That's true for just about anything. If a show is doing something like that, you should be asking yourself why, because that's probably the whole point of taking you out of the experience.
That's right. For example. Oshii is obviously trying to be "immersive" when he does those city montages, and it works. And that's great -- he's trying to give you a context of another place and time.

But I don't think Shinbo is trying to be "immersive" in... anything. And that's okay too.

If we're really trying to be intellectual, a lot of rhetoric and narrative classes that I'm taking say the exact opposite of what you're saying. lol.
To be fair - I might differ from pizzaroll on this; but relating "text' to your own personal life or reality is a perfectly valid way of evaluating art, but it's not the only way. More or less, any piece of text should be evaluated on it's own merits, and good art doesn't have to say something about our own personal lives or world to be meaningful.

GINTAMA 256

VERDICT ( Kintama Arc ) : VERY GOOD
I guess it's because there was a break before hand but I found the Kintama acr a bit disappointing. Good beginning and end but it waned in the middle.

A racing episode and not a single CGI car in sight. Other animation studios, are you even trying?

The iDOLM@STER 20

...

Feels. This episode had them.
And this is why Haruka x Chihaya is OTP.

Sorry, can't agree, I could listen to Holo and Lawrence take turns reading from a phone book.

Yeah. I could listen to them talk forever. Though I guess could have done with less explaining sometimes, but hey I guess at least in theory a wide audience needs to understand it.

Maybe we can manipulate Kayos's opinions of things via gifs. I'll see if I can scrounge up some Toradora gifs and correct his character impressions.
Manipulate his opinion through gifs eh?

What? Are you saying that you're somehow above us because you took a film theory class or something? How's the view atop that high horse?
Kind of funny since in the UK media studies is looked down upon.

My twitter handle IS my real name. I didn't really think ahead with this thing
Can't you change it at anytime? My display name is a cross between this and my real name just so people from either world can recognise who I am. There are some people on GAF who even know what all four letters mean.

Man, they crammed so many special appeals into this episode that I completely lost count. It seems they've finally started to build some overarching plot as they introduced both the "Legendary" idols that can overcome the three-special-appeal-limit and it's hinted that
Ichigo's mother may have been an idol in the past.
Well, I guess they gotta make this thing last 50+ episodes somehow.

Surely I'm not the only one still watching this, right? :(

Well, to be fair, that's the one by the sister group to AKB48, where the anime theme is only the B-side single, so of course it's going to sell like crazy.

Sakurasou 18

I liked how they were trying to make a realistic reference to GDC with the game designer talking about going to San Francisco for a game conference, but that's usually not until March and the story's still somewhere in mid-late February, I think... points for the effort, though.

This should mark the end of LN volume 5, I believe. Ten are planned in total, with only eight currently released, so we're far enough behind that I'm not expecting a satisfying conclusion for the anime.

According to the editor, "Manga Sunday" couldn't survive this model because its target market is older people and those don't really buy tanks/watch anime.
Well, the older version of the model worked because it involved just breaking even on the weeklies, then taking the rest as pure profit. Taking losses up front then maybe breaking even later maybe a little more just doesn't do it.

Following some recommendations from you, I've been watching Gintama, Baccano (awesome), Level E... now I'm watching Gundam Turn A

Gundam Turn A 18

There are so many absurd things going on here. People switching factions, the "disguises"...

I'm ok with Kihel and Dianna Soriel switching since they are identical, but still, it is weird how they manage to act exactly like the other one...

But the thing going on with Loran/Laura Rora makes no sense. First Guin calling him Laura, just because. Then they use it for the plot's advantage (I guess) and Loran disguises himself so they don't know who is the pilot... The thing is, he never suggests it, it is always Guin who is not aware he's moonrace! (at least in the beginning).
After everyone knows he's moonrace, they just keep on it so Loran can wear woman clothes once in a while :O .

Oh yeah, two shows from summer released their final volumes last week, so we have a couple final averages:

Tari Tari averages about 8,300 across six volumes (DVD+BD).
Moyashimon Returns averages about 1,600 across six volumes (DVD+BD).

What's driving up the costs of publishing weeklies now as opposed to then? Or is it just less subscribers?

Most likely its less people buying the magazines. Manga magazines used to be a good way to kill time on trains and stuff but with the advent of smartphones, handhelds, whatever, there's really no reason to buy one nowadays.

Wow, the mecha for Majestic Prince have pretty interesting designs: http://mjp-anime.jp/12mecha/index.html

Hopefully Orange is going to do interesting CG animations here like they did for Akito. Considering how they're credited for co-production of the series, this could be their moment to shine. :D

Manga subscriptions aren't really a thing. Newsstands and kiosks are king, or at least used to be.

That really doesn't seem like an unfixable situation, but I guess it's more fun to drag feet.

I like those designs better than the Akito ones.

What's exciting is that the mecha designer for the main faction mechs (shown here) is someone who seems to have not worked on other anime: http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=116565

There are two more designers for the other different factions as well:
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=8159
http://www.animenewsnetwork.com/encyclopedia/people.php?id=1368

It'll be interesting to see how different they look. Come, join me and embrace a better CG future! :D

People buy the latest One Piece though! If you see someone on a train reading manga, there's a 75% chance they're reading One Piece.

You'd have been here a lot earlier if you hadn't let the shows tempo burn off in the islands.
Ah yes, episode 36 is just one massive tribute to
Space Battleship Yamato.
It's practically a recreation!
I find the lack of commentary on episode 33-34 by your part very clever.
It takes everything you liked about the TV series and EoE and takes a massive dump on it. Characterizations, continuity, common sense, all go out the window in the name of Anno getting his kicks in and pissing off all its fans.
Oh man, it sounds like the end of Eva (TV) all over again. Can't wait.

I grabbed Code Geass: Akito the Exiled on BD a few weeks back and jeezus it looks beautiful on a good screen. I was pausing at random intervals just to look at the details or a dynamic composition.

I'm totally rooting for Orange at this point.

Also, Gundam Turn A is one of the weirdest things I've ever watched. I just couldn't pull away from it, despite the fact that there was nothing about it that was particularly exciting.

Well now, that was one hell of an :sdburton and :cuilan valentines special. Maybe it's just me but the CG parts seem way easier on the eyes than they use to, I'm kinda worried I've suffered some CG induced brain damage now. :(

Ahh, that makes sense.

I watch it (it's an idol cartoon, so I feel obligated to), but there's not really a whole lot to say about it on a weekly basis...
Fair enough.

Declining sales of the weekly mags.

They're the same mech their respective quote boxes. I think there's some mecha-in-mecha thing going on for the two Forward mechs. So those are the base frames, and then they power up with some "link" system and get the larger assault suits.

This tells me I should be expecting some gattai porn, and that's what I'll be doing until this airs.

Now, the human characters are certainly more worrying...

A shame they decided to use Hirai's character design though...

'Supers' are awesome, for sure and I also appreciate good 'Reals' too. But there hasn't been a good 'Real' since the Macross series, in my opinion.
