Virtualdub doesn't open my mkv videos, do I need to download one of those fancy extensions or is there another way around it?

I'm going to try the smplayer thing though, seems comfy.

I use FFmpegSource with Virtualdub, which I switched to after 10-bit became popular because it wasn't working with Directshow. I like using Virtualdub because it becomes a lot easier for me to pick start and endpoints by going backwards and forwards one frame at a time. I could always use my media player codec to output frames, but my setup doesn't seek very precisely. I also like how Virtualdub shows how many frames your selection is. It lets me keep in mind whether I'm going over the frame limit in Photoshop.
