I really dig this new dungeon. Very interesting design, with all the strange creatures and pretty background art. The show in general has been quite enjoyable since they got out of Balbadd and Alibaba stopped being a complete bitch.

LOL they have a poster there and everything. What does the average Japanese person think when they see something like this?

This is way out in the sticks, so I'm gonna assume: a) bewilderment and; b) wondering what their crazy mayor is gonna do to attract tourists next.

YES! Finally, I arrived at best arc. Right from the start, these six episodes are really amazing. They blew me away the first time, and I'm confident I'll enjoy them just as much if not more again.

I like how the beginning of the episode builds anticipation for the festival, and does so separately from the perspective of each of the titular characters, already setting up the structure of the whole festival. Just after that, the festival begins in full force. The two BGM tracks used complemented each scene really well.

Again, episode 12 was the debut for another Kyoani newbie: Taiichi Ogawa. He has since then, directed Hyouka 19, Tamako Market 3 (and he's doing this week's episode too), and storyboarded Chuuni 11. I find him to be really good, and this episode seems to confirm that as well.
The whole episode is filled with atmosphere and dynamism, it would take too long to talk about every little thing in the background that makes this such a joy to watch.

I like the framing and layout of these shots, the screen is very neatly arranged. And fuck, just look at that floor! It's not only really detailed with the reflection and all, but it also serves to emphasize the depth of the screen as Chitanda walks away from the camera. It makes for a nice gag just a moment later.

The animation in this episode is really something. It's yet another debut, this time of animation director Nao Naitou. She has since then worked on Hyouka 17, Chuuni 10 and Tamako Market 9, and she's also very good. It's almost scary how much young talent there is in Kyoani, every time there is someone new getting promoted to new positions, and most of them are really something. Another notable person who worked in this episode, as key animator, is Shinpei Sawa. According to comments, she handled the Eru/Tanabe scene, the karuta part and many others, and was the main responsible for the egregious amount of side-characters doing stuff and moving in the background. He has done mecha design for those Chuu2 shorts, I'd say we're not far away from seeing him in more important positions.
And of course, Taichi Ishidate was on top of the list for KA credits. He did the insane breakdancing scene and it was probably uncorrected, but I have a hunch he also did some other stuff in the episode. Satoshi laughing at the Manzai group could be him, corrected by the sakkan.
There's no end to how good this episode is. Even better, when it finishes you're greeted with the wonderful ED2 and you know this arc is going to be something else.

Prism Nana continues to remind us that it still exists, with the fanservice-laden 30-second sample of the sixth pilot PV:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ox-9vqORJos

edit: You'll notice that the above video, from the official Prism Nana YouTube account, has now been "removed as a violation of YouTube's policy on nudity or sexual content." And the million other videos on YouTube of swimsuit-clad young anime girls are okay beacuse...?

Holy shit @ the finger licking.

I have to believe the author made this as a joke. It has so many tropes in it at ridiculous levels

Brother-con Tsundere that is super powerful and violent.

Edit: Really? Censoring the nipples. With all of the rest you are showing? I'm ashamed Japan. ASHAMED.

The Hanasaku Iroha movie (Hanasaku Iroha HOME SWEET HOME) opened in 4 theaters in Ishikawa Prefecture this weekend ahead of Kanto (Tokyo) or anywhere else in the country. If you're wondering, the setting is based on a place in Kanazawa City, Ishikawa Prefecture and that's apparently why they got first dibs.

Man, anime otaku are nuts. There are reports of some dudes watching all 4 showings of the movie on Saturday. Yes, that's actually a train that has a HanaIro theme painted on it.

Also, since I decided to look it up, apparently the station that Yunosagi was based off of, Nishigishi, has been renamed to... Yunosagi Station. WTF PA Works. You got a city to change the name of a place because of anime... :lol

I'm taking note of how rusted the sign has become.

Edit: I suppose it's to copy the state of the sign in the anime.

I'm not sure what took me so long to watch this week's episode. This was soooooo goooooooood. The dodgeball fight in the manga is the reason I fell so deeply in love with the Greed Island arc. It's probably my favorite fight in the whole series. It's awesome to see this adaptation truly do it justice. To give it 5 episodes to itself. Glorious.

The way it was handled this week was pure awesome. The pacing, the tension, the visuals. It was all top notch. Seeing the teamwork involved in solving this problem is what this series really does best for me. The constraints of dodgeball only work to make the rules of the fight more interesting. Gah, I cannot wait to see it all conclude next week. We'll also be getting
Young Ging!
so that's something to look forward to as well.

PENGUINDRUM 1 - 12 (rewatch, dubwatch, bd)

Really do have a greater appreciation for the moments early on in this series as we see their day to day life segments, cooperation, and family dynamics. Kamba and Shoma really are good with great interactions and Himari there too all happy trying to keep things going is a perfect part of the picture. Really sad when the fate stuff gets going and everyone tries to stick on and hold on, which feels more emotional going through 12 episodes back to back in five or so hours.

For a dub, Kamba's voice was a bit questionable. Felt as if he and Sanetoshi ought to have exchanged voices to fit better, though started to like Kamba's especially when he gets serious and worked up. Shoma has Otonashi's voice which was lovely, Fabulous max is great to hear though Survival Tactic is probably not on my preferred take on it.

Unfortunately, I must be paying attention to other things as I dont think I noticed visual oddities people brought up, other than some random jaggies or something on the background figures during one of the crowd scenes in front of a station.

Oh well will run through the final episodes wednesday or so when the next part comes and hopefully all 24 episodes again in a few Saturday's, guess I really like this...

Mobile Suit Gundam 00 15

So basically, the entire world just told Pretentious Being to go and screw itself. By rights the Gundam pilots (I refuse to use the word Meister because it's hilariously stupid) should all die right now, the show should end, and we can all rest assured that idiot, pretentious, teenage terrorists will all lose to, you know, the combined military strength of the world, which they were stupid enough to knowingly face in combat.

But NOOOOOO, just when all hope is lost, Gundam ASSPULL appears to save the day! Yippee.

Seriously, Lockon is the only one of these morons worth saving.

And hey, whatever happened to the terrorists threatening to keep killing people if Celestial Being stopped?

And for the love of God, can we please stop adding new characters to the plot? Freakin' Saji Crossroads' entire plotline is absolutely unnecessary to the story, as are, you know, 90% of the rest of the cast's. Maybe your principal characters wouldn't suck so much if you didn't keep introducing new ones and instead spent your time developing the ones you've got?

"I hate adults" I had no idea this guy wasn't one until he said that. Gundam faces these days. I'm beginning to think the only proper marker of age is cup size.

For what its worth, Saji's true character arc is going to begin soon. It'd probably be more jarring if you didn't know who he was before they do what they do.

So what has the twitterverse brought to us tonight? How about a 400 page PhD dissertation titled Breaking Binaries: Transgressing Sexualities in Japanese Animation by Christy Gibbs, a graduate of the University of Waikato in New Zealand, covering material ranging from Sailor Moon and Evangelion through Rapelay? It puts into perspective that manga high school class I mentioned a while back.

Never let anyone say anime won't help you achieve anything in life.

I'm glad, after 15 episodes, they finally decided to do something with Saji, then. Because he's basically been a worthless waste of ink so far.

Thinking back, I think he sort of thematically makes sense as this embodiment of the innocent civilians so far removed from the various conflicts. I won't say he never stops being annoying as he probably gets worse but he does get more interesting when paths begin to intersect.

Sorry but I only watch dissertations in youtube form that are based on the critical theory known as TVTropes.com.

Man, those PhD dissertation titles really drive home the fact that, under all that education, PhD students are as boring and poorly humored as most of the rest of us.

Some of them are just fantastic, I mean.

"When 'No, No!' Means 'Oh God, Yes!' – Boys Loving Boys" and "The Beast That Shouted 'Love' At the Heart of the World – Sex and Dysfunction in Evangelion" and oh boy, "Single, Desperate and Lonely – Building a Harem".

From some of the pieces I looked over there is actually some interesting stuff in here, but shockingly enough is filled with irrelevant information and awkward inferences. Ultimately just another thesis.pdf.
